سورة طه

20. Surah Taha
Ta-Ha

In the name of God, the Almighty, the Merciful.

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّح۪يمِ

Bismi Allahi arrahmani arraheem

ṭā hā

طٰهٰۜ

Ta-ha

We have not sent down upon thee the Qur’an that thou be wretched,

مَٓا اَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْاٰنَ لِتَشْقٰىۙ

Ma anzalna AAalayka alqur-analitashqa

But only as a reminder to him who fears —

اِلَّا تَذْكِرَةً لِمَنْ يَخْشٰىۙ

Illa tathkiratan liman yakhsha

A revelation from Him who created the earth and the high heavens.

تَنْز۪يلاً مِمَّنْ خَلَقَ الْاَرْضَ وَالسَّمٰوَاتِ الْعُلٰىۜ

Tanzeelan mimman khalaqa al-arda wassamawatialAAula

The Almighty established Himself upon the Throne;

اَلرَّحْمٰنُ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ اسْتَوٰى

Arrahmanu AAalaalAAarshi istawa

To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is in the earth, and what is between them, and what is under the soil.

لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمٰوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْاَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَمَا تَحْتَ الثَّرٰى

Lahu ma fee assamawatiwama fee al-ardi wama baynahuma wamatahta aththara

And if thou be public in speech, then He knows the secret and what is more hidden.

وَاِنْ تَجْهَرْ بِالْقَوْلِ فَاِنَّهُ يَعْلَمُ السِّرَّ وَاَخْفٰى

Wa-in tajhar bilqawli fa-innahuyaAAlamu assirra waakhfa

God, there is no god save He; to Him belong the best names.

اَللّٰهُ لَٓا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَۜ لَهُ الْاَسْمَٓاءُ الْحُسْنٰى

Allahu la ilaha illahuwa lahu al-asmao alhusna

And has there come to thee the story of Moses?

وَهَلْ اَتٰيكَ حَد۪يثُ مُوسٰىۢ

Wahal ataka hadeethu moosa

When he saw a fire, and said to his people: “Stay here; I perceive a fire. I might bring you therefrom a firebrand, or find at the fire guidance.”

اِذْ رَاٰ نَاراً فَقَالَ لِاَهْلِهِ امْكُـثُٓوا اِنّ۪ٓي اٰنَسْتُ نَاراً لَعَلّ۪ٓي اٰت۪يكُمْ مِنْهَا بِقَبَسٍ اَوْ اَجِدُ عَلَى النَّارِ هُدًى

Ith raa naran faqalali-ahlihi omkuthoo innee anastu naran laAAallee ateekumminha biqabasin aw ajidu AAala annarihuda

And when he came to it, he was called: “O Moses:

فَلَمَّٓا اَتٰيهَا نُودِيَ يَا مُوسٰى

Falamma ataha noodiya yamoosa

“I am thy Lord; so remove thou thy sandals; thou art in the sacred valley of Ṭuwa.

اِنّ۪ٓي اَنَا۬ رَبُّكَ فَاخْلَعْ نَعْلَيْكَۚ اِنَّكَ بِالْوَادِ الْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًىۜ

Innee ana rabbuka fakhlaAAnaAAlayka innaka bilwadi almuqaddasi tuwa

“And I have chosen thee, so hearken thou to what is revealed:

وَاَنَا اخْتَرْتُكَ فَاسْتَمِـعْ لِمَا يُوحٰى

Waana ikhtartuka fastamiAAlima yooha

“I am God. There is no god save I, so serve thou Me; and uphold thou the duty for My remembrance:

اِنَّـن۪ٓي اَنَا اللّٰهُ لَٓا اِلٰهَ اِلَّٓا اَنَا۬ فَاعْبُدْن۪يۙ وَاَقِمِ الصَّلٰوةَ لِذِكْر۪ي

Innanee ana Allahu lailaha illa ana faAAbudnee waaqimi assalatalithikree

“The Hour is coming — I almost conceal it — that every soul might be rewarded for that for which it strives;

اِنَّ السَّاعَةَ اٰتِيَةٌ اَكَادُ اُخْف۪يهَا لِتُجْزٰى كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا تَسْعٰى

Inna assaAAata atiyatunakadu okhfeeha litujza kullu nafsin bimatasAAa

“And let not turn thee away from it him who believes not in it but follows his vain desire, or thou wilt perish.

فَلَا يَصُدَّنَّكَ عَنْهَا مَنْ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِهَا وَاتَّـبَعَ هَوٰيهُ فَتَرْدٰى

Fala yasuddannaka AAanhaman la yu/minu biha wattabaAAa hawahufatarda

“And what is that in thy right hand, O Moses?”

وَمَا تِلْكَ بِيَم۪ينِكَ يَا مُوسٰى

Wama tilka biyameenika ya moosa

Said he: “It is my staff. I lean on it, and beat down therewith leaves for my sheep; and I have therefor other uses.”

قَالَ هِيَ عَصَايَۚ اَتَوَكَّـؤُ۬ا عَلَيْهَا وَاَهُشُّ بِهَا عَلٰى غَنَم۪ي وَلِيَ ف۪يهَا مَاٰرِبُ اُخْرٰى

Qala hiya AAasaya atawakkaoAAalayha waahushshu biha AAala ghanameewaliya feeha maaribu okhra

He said: “Cast thou it down, O Moses.”

قَالَ اَلْقِهَا يَا مُوسٰى

Qala alqiha ya moosa

And he cast it down, and then was it a serpent moving.

فَاَلْقٰيهَا فَاِذَا هِيَ حَيَّةٌ تَسْعٰى

Faalqaha fa-itha hiya hayyatuntasAAa

He said: “Take thou it, and fear thou not; We will return it to its former state.

قَالَ خُذْهَا وَلَا تَخَفْ۠ سَنُع۪يدُهَا س۪يرَتَهَا الْاُو۫لٰى

Qala khuthha walatakhaf sanuAAeeduha seerataha al-oola

“And draw thou thy hand into thy bosom: it will come forth white, without evil, as another proof,

وَاضْمُمْ يَدَكَ اِلٰى جَنَاحِكَ تَخْرُجْ بَيْضَٓاءَ مِنْ غَيْرِ سُٓوءٍ اٰيَةً اُخْرٰىۙ

Wadmum yadaka ila janahikatakhruj baydaa min ghayri soo-in ayatan okhra

“That We might show thee some of Our greater proofs.

لِنُرِيَكَ مِنْ اٰيَاتِنَا الْكُبْرٰىۚ

Linuriyaka min ayatinaalkubra

“Go thou to Pharaoh. He has transgressed.”

اِذْهَبْ اِلٰى فِرْعَوْنَ اِنَّهُ طَغٰى۟

Ithhab ila firAAawna innahu tagha

Said he: “My Lord: expand Thou for me my breast,

قَالَ رَبِّ اشْرَحْ ل۪ي صَدْر۪يۙ

Qala rabbi ishrah lee sadree

“And ease Thou for me my affair,

وَيَسِّرْ ل۪ٓي اَمْر۪يۙ

Wayassir lee amree

“And loosen Thou the knot from my tongue,

وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَان۪يۙ

Wahlul AAuqdatan min lisanee

“That they might understand my speech.

يَفْقَهُوا قَوْل۪يۖ

Yafqahoo qawlee

“And appoint Thou for me an assistant from my family:

وَاجْعَلْ ل۪ي وَز۪يراً مِنْ اَهْل۪يۙ

WajAAal lee wazeeran min ahlee

“Aaron, my brother;

هٰرُونَ اَخ۪يۚ

Haroona akhee

“Strengthen Thou by him my strength,

اُشْدُدْ بِه۪ٓ اَزْر۪يۙ

Oshdud bihi azree

“And make Thou him share in my affair,

وَاَشْرِكْهُ ف۪ٓي اَمْر۪يۙ

Waashrik-hu fee amree

“That we might glorify Thee much,

كَيْ نُسَبِّحَكَ كَث۪يراًۙ

Kay nusabbihaka katheera

“And remember Thee much.

وَنَذْكُرَكَ كَث۪يراًۜ

Wanathkuraka katheera

“Thou dost see us.”

اِنَّكَ كُنْتَ بِنَا بَص۪يراً

Innaka kunta bina baseera

He said: “Thou hast been granted thy request, O Moses.

قَالَ قَدْ اُو۫ت۪يتَ سُؤْلَكَ يَا مُوسٰى

Qala qad ooteeta su/laka yamoosa

“And We bestowed favour upon thee another time,

وَلَقَدْ مَنَنَّا عَلَيْكَ مَرَّةً اُخْرٰىۙ

Walaqad mananna AAalayka marratanokhra

“When We instructed thy mother with what was instructed:

اِذْ اَوْحَيْنَٓا اِلٰٓى اُمِّكَ مَا يُوحٰىۙ

Ith awhayna ilaommika ma yooha

“‘Hurl thou him into the chest, and hurl thou it into the water; the water will cast him upon the shore. An enemy to Me and an enemy to him will take him.’ And I cast upon thee love from Me, and that thou be wrought under My eye

اَنِ اقْذِف۪يهِ فِي التَّابُوتِ فَاقْذِف۪يهِ فِي الْيَمِّ فَلْيُلْقِهِ الْيَمُّ بِالسَّاحِلِ يَأْخُذْهُ عَدُوٌّ ل۪ي وَعَدُوٌّ لَهُۜ وَاَلْقَيْتُ عَلَيْكَ مَحَبَّةً مِنّ۪يۚ وَلِتُصْنَعَ عَلٰى عَيْن۪يۢ

Ani iqthifeehi fee attabootifaqthifeehi fee alyammi falyulqihi alyammu bissahiliya/khuthhu AAaduwwun lee waAAaduwwun lahu waalqaytuAAalayka mahabbatan minnee walitusnaAAa AAalaAAaynee

“When thy sister went and said: ‘Shall I direct you to one who will take care of him?’ So We returned thee to thy mother, that her eye might be comforted and grieve not. And thou didst kill a soul; and We delivered thee from distress, and subjected thee to means of denial by a trial. And thou didst tarry years among the people of Madyan; then camest thou as ordained, O Moses.

اِذْ تَمْش۪ٓي اُخْتُكَ فَتَقُولُ هَلْ اَدُلُّكُمْ عَلٰى مَنْ يَكْفُلُهُۜ فَرَجَعْنَاكَ اِلٰٓى اُمِّكَ كَيْ تَقَرَّ عَيْنُهَا وَلَا تَحْزَنَۜ وَقَتَلْتَ نَفْساً فَنَجَّيْنَاكَ مِنَ الْغَمِّ وَفَتَنَّاكَ فُتُوناً۠ فَلَبِثْتَ سِن۪ينَ ف۪ٓي اَهْلِ مَدْيَنَ ثُمَّ جِئْتَ عَلٰى قَدَرٍ يَا مُوسٰى

Ith tamshee okhtuka fataqoolu haladullukum AAala man yakfuluhu farajaAAnaka ilaommika kay taqarra AAaynuha wala tahzanawaqatalta nafsan fanajjaynaka mina alghammi wafatannakafutoonan falabithta sineena fee ahli madyana thumma ji/ta AAalaqadarin ya moosa

“And I chose thee for Myself;

وَاصْطَنَعْتُكَ لِنَفْس۪يۚ

WastanaAAtuka linafsee

“Go thou and thy brother with My proofs — and flag not in My remembrance —

اِذْهَبْ اَنْتَ وَاَخُوكَ بِاٰيَات۪ي وَلَا تَنِيَا ف۪ي ذِكْر۪يۚ

Ithhab anta waakhooka bi-ayateewala taniya fee thikree

“Go to Pharaoh. He has transgressed.

اِذْهَبَٓا اِلٰى فِرْعَوْنَ اِنَّهُ طَغٰىۚ

Ithhaba ila firAAawnainnahu tagha

“And speak to him a gentle word, that he might take heed, or fear.”

فَقُولَا لَهُ قَوْلاً لَيِّناً لَعَلَّهُ يَتَذَكَّرُ اَوْ يَخْشٰى

Faqoola lahu qawlan layyinanlaAAallahu yatathakkaru aw yakhsha

They said: “Our Lord: we fear lest he hasten against us, or that he will transgress.”

قَالَا رَبَّـنَٓا اِنَّـنَا نَخَافُ اَنْ يَفْرُطَ عَلَيْنَٓا اَوْ اَنْ يَطْغٰى

Qala rabbana innananakhafu an yafruta AAalayna aw an yatgha

He said: “Fear not; I am with you, hearing and seeing.

قَالَ لَا تَخَافَٓا اِنَّن۪ي مَعَكُمَٓا اَسْمَعُ وَاَرٰى

Qala la takhafainnanee maAAakuma asmaAAu waara

“So go to him, and say: ‘We are the messengers of thy Lord, so send thou the children of Israel with us, and punish thou them not. We have come to thee with a proof from thy Lord; and peace be upon him who follows the guidance!

فَأْتِيَاهُ فَقُولَٓا اِنَّا رَسُولَا رَبِّكَ فَاَرْسِلْ مَعَنَا بَن۪ٓي اِسْرَٓائ۪لَ وَلَا تُعَذِّبْهُمْۜ قَدْ جِئْنَاكَ بِاٰيَةٍ مِنْ رَبِّكَۜ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلٰى مَنِ اتَّـبَعَ الْهُدٰى

Fa/tiyahu faqoola innarasoola rabbika faarsil maAAana banee isra-eelawala tuAAaththibhum qad ji/naka bi-ayatinmin rabbika wassalamu AAala mani ittabaAAaalhuda

“‘It has been revealed to us that the punishment is upon him who denies and turns away.’”

اِنَّا قَدْ اُو۫حِيَ اِلَيْنَٓا اَنَّ الْعَذَابَ عَلٰى مَنْ كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلّٰى

Inna qad oohiya ilaynaanna alAAathaba AAala man kaththaba watawalla

Said he: “And who is your Lord, O Moses?”

قَالَ فَمَنْ رَبُّكُمَا يَا مُوسٰى

Qala faman rabbukuma yamoosa

He said: “Our Lord is He who gave everything its creation, then guided.”

قَالَ رَبُّنَا الَّـذ۪ٓي اَعْطٰى كُلَّ شَيْءٍ خَلْقَهُ ثُمَّ هَدٰى

Qala rabbuna allatheeaAAta kulla shay-in khalqahu thumma hada

Said he: “And what is the case of the former generations?”

قَالَ فَمَا بَالُ الْقُرُونِ الْاُو۫لٰى

Qala fama balualqurooni al-oola

He said: “The knowledge thereof is with my Lord in a writ; my Lord neither errs, nor forgets.”

قَالَ عِلْمُهَا عِنْدَ رَبّ۪ي ف۪ي كِتَابٍۚ لَا يَضِلُّ رَبّ۪ي وَلَا يَنْسٰىۘ

Qala AAilmuha AAinda rabbeefee kitabin la yadillu rabbee walayansa

(Who made the earth for you as a bed, and inserted roads for you therein; and sent down from the sky water, and thereby have We brought forth diverse kinds of plants:

اَلَّذ۪ي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْاَرْضَ مَهْداً وَسَلَكَ لَكُمْ ف۪يهَا سُبُلاً وَاَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَٓاءِ مَٓاءًۜ فَاَخْرَجْنَا بِه۪ٓ اَزْوَاجاً مِنْ نَبَاتٍ شَتّٰى

Allathee jaAAala lakumu al-ardamahdan wasalaka lakum feeha subulan waanzala mina assama-imaan faakhrajna bihi azwajan min nabatinshatta

“Eat, and pasture your cattle.” In that are proofs for possessors of intelligence.

كُلُوا وَارْعَوْا اَنْعَامَكُمْۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِاُو۬لِي النُّهٰى۟

Kuloo warAAaw anAAamakum innafee thalika laayatin li-olee annuha

Therefrom did We create you, and thereto will We return you, and therefrom will We bring you forth another time.)

مِنْهَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ وَف۪يهَا نُع۪يدُكُمْ وَمِنْهَا نُخْرِجُكُمْ تَارَةً اُخْرٰى

Minha khalaqnakum wafeehanuAAeedukum waminha nukhrijukum taratan okhra

And We showed him all Our proofs, but he denied and refused.

وَلَقَدْ اَرَيْنَاهُ اٰيَاتِنَا كُلَّهَا فَكَذَّبَ وَاَبٰى

Walaqad araynahu ayatinakullaha fakaththaba waaba

Said he: “Hast thou come to turn us out of our land by thy sorcery, O Moses?

قَالَ اَجِئْتَنَا لِتُخْرِجَنَا مِنْ اَرْضِنَا بِسِحْرِكَ يَا مُوسٰى

Qala aji/tana litukhrijanamin ardina bisihrika ya moosa

“Then will we bring thee sorcery the like thereof; so make thou an appointment between us and thee, which neither we nor thou shall fail to keep — an equal place.”

فَلَنَأْتِيَنَّكَ بِسِحْرٍ مِثْلِه۪ فَاجْعَلْ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكَ مَوْعِداً لَا نُخْلِفُهُ نَحْنُ وَلَٓا اَنْتَ مَكَاناً سُوًى

Falana/tiyannaka bisihrin mithlihi fajAAalbaynana wabaynaka mawAAidan la nukhlifuhu nahnuwala anta makanan suwa

He said: “Your appointment is the day of the festival; and let the people be gathered at midday.”

قَالَ مَوْعِدُكُمْ يَوْمُ الزّ۪ينَةِ وَاَنْ يُحْشَرَ النَّاسُ ضُحًى

Qala mawAAidukum yawmu azzeenatiwaan yuhshara annasu duha

And Pharaoh turned away, and gathered his plan; then he came.

فَتَوَلّٰى فِرْعَوْنُ فَجَمَعَ كَيْدَهُ ثُمَّ اَتٰى

Fatawalla firAAawnu fajamaAAa kaydahuthumma ata

Moses said to them: “Woe to you! Invent not a lie against God lest He utterly destroy you with a punishment; and he has failed who invents.”

قَالَ لَهُمْ مُوسٰى وَيْلَكُمْ لَا تَفْتَرُوا عَلَى اللّٰهِ كَذِباً فَيُسْحِتَكُمْ بِعَذَابٍۚ وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنِ افْتَرٰى

Qala lahum moosa waylakum lataftaroo AAala Allahi kathiban fayushitakumbiAAathabin waqad khaba mani iftara

And they disputed about their affair among themselves, and kept secret their private conversation.

فَتَنَازَعُٓوا اَمْرَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ وَاَسَرُّوا النَّجْوٰى

FatanazaAAoo amrahum baynahumwaasarroo annajwa

(They said: “These are two sorcerers who want to turn you out of your land by their sorcery, and take away your exemplary tradition.

قَالُٓوا اِنْ هٰذَانِ لَسَاحِرَانِ يُر۪يدَانِ اَنْ يُخْرِجَاكُمْ مِنْ اَرْضِكُمْ بِسِحْرِهِمَا وَيَذْهَبَا بِطَر۪يقَتِكُمُ الْمُثْلٰى

Qaloo in hathani lasahiraniyureedani an yukhrijakum min ardikum bisihrihimawayathhaba bitareeqatikumu almuthla

“So resolve upon your plan, then come with one accord; and he has succeeded who prevails this day.”)

فَاَجْمِعُوا كَيْدَكُمْ ثُمَّ ائْتُوا صَفاًّۚ وَقَدْ اَفْلَحَ الْيَوْمَ مَنِ اسْتَعْلٰى

FaajmiAAoo kaydakum thumma i/too saffanwaqad aflaha alyawma mani istaAAla

They said: “O Moses: either thou wilt cast, or we will be the first who cast.”

قَالُوا يَا مُوسٰٓى اِمَّٓا اَنْ تُلْقِيَ وَاِمَّٓا اَنْ نَكُونَ اَوَّلَ مَنْ اَلْقٰى

Qaloo ya moosa immaan tulqiya wa-imma an nakoona awwala man alqa

He said: “Nay, you cast.” And then their ropes and their staffs seemed to him, by their sorcery, to be moving,

قَالَ بَلْ اَلْقُواۚ فَاِذَا حِبَالُهُمْ وَعِصِيُّهُمْ يُخَيَّلُ اِلَيْهِ مِنْ سِحْرِهِمْ اَنَّهَا تَسْعٰى

Qala bal alqoo fa-itha hibaluhumwaAAisiyyuhum yukhayyalu ilayhi min sihrihim annahatasAAa

And Moses conceived a fear within him.

فَاَوْجَسَ ف۪ي نَفْسِه۪ خ۪يفَةً مُوسٰى

Faawjasa fee nafsihi kheefatan moosa

We said: “Fear thou not; thou art the uppermost.

قُلْنَا لَا تَخَفْ اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ الْاَعْلٰى

Qulna la takhaf innaka antaal-aAAla

“And cast thou what is in thy right hand; it will swallow up what they have wrought. They have wrought but the plan of a sorcerer, and the sorcerer will not be successful, no matter where he goes.”

وَاَلْقِ مَا ف۪ي يَم۪ينِكَ تَلْقَفْ مَا صَنَعُواۜ اِنَّمَا صَنَعُوا كَيْدُ سَاحِرٍۜ وَلَا يُفْلِحُ السَّاحِرُ حَيْثُ اَتٰى

Waalqi ma fee yameenika talqaf masanaAAoo innama sanaAAoo kaydu sahirinwala yuflihu assahiru haythuata

And the sorcerers cast themselves down in submission. They said: “We have believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses.”

فَاُلْقِيَ السَّحَرَةُ سُجَّداً قَالُٓوا اٰمَنَّا بِرَبِّ هٰرُونَ وَمُوسٰى

Faolqiya assaharatu sujjadanqaloo amanna birabbi haroona wamoosa

Said he: “You have believed him before I gave you leave. He is your chief who taught you sorcery; then will I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and crucify you on the trunks of date-palms; and you will know which of us is severer in punishment and more enduring.”

قَالَ اٰمَنْتُمْ لَهُ قَبْلَ اَنْ اٰذَنَ لَكُمْۜ اِنَّهُ لَكَب۪يرُكُمُ الَّذ۪ي عَلَّمَكُمُ السِّحْرَۚ فَلَاُقَطِّعَنَّ اَيْدِيَكُمْ وَاَرْجُلَكُمْ مِنْ خِلَافٍ وَلَاُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ ف۪ي جُذُوعِ النَّخْلِۘ وَلَتَعْلَمُنَّ اَيُّـنَٓا اَشَدُّ عَذَاباً وَاَبْقٰى

Qala amantum lahu qabla an athanalakum innahu lakabeerukumu allathee AAallamakumu assihrafalaoqattiAAanna aydiyakum waarjulakum min khilafinwalaosallibannakum fee juthooAAi annakhliwalataAAlamunna ayyuna ashaddu AAathaban waabqa

They said: “We will not prefer thee over what has come to us of clear signs, or Him who created us. So decide thou what thou wilt decide; thou canst but decide this worldly life.

قَالُوا لَنْ نُؤْثِرَكَ عَلٰى مَا جَٓاءَنَا مِنَ الْبَيِّنَاتِ وَالَّذ۪ي فَطَرَنَا فَاقْضِ مَٓا اَنْتَ قَاضٍۜ اِنَّمَا تَقْض۪ي هٰذِهِ الْحَيٰوةَ الدُّنْيَاۜ

Qaloo lan nu/thiraka AAala majaana mina albayyinati wallatheefatarana faqdi ma anta qadininnama taqdee hathihi alhayataaddunya

“We have believed in our Lord, that He might forgive us our offences, and what thou didst compel us to of sorcery; and God is better and more enduring.”

اِنَّٓا اٰمَنَّا بِرَبِّنَا لِيَغْفِرَ لَنَا خَطَايَانَا وَمَٓا اَكْرَهْتَنَا عَلَيْهِ مِنَ السِّحْرِۜ وَاللّٰهُ خَيْرٌ وَاَبْقٰى

Inna amanna birabbinaliyaghfira lana khatayana wamaakrahtana AAalayhi mina assihri wallahukhayrun waabqa

(Whoso comes to his Lord as a lawbreaker, for him is Gehenna; he will neither die therein nor live.

اِنَّهُ مَنْ يَأْتِ رَبَّهُ مُجْرِماً فَاِنَّ لَهُ جَهَنَّمَۜ لَا يَمُوتُ ف۪يهَا وَلَا يَحْيٰى

Innahu man ya/ti rabbahu mujriman fa-innalahu jahannama la yamootu feeha wala yahya

And whoso comes to Him as a believer, having done righteous deeds, those have the high degrees:

وَمَنْ يَأْتِه۪ مُؤْمِناً قَدْ عَمِلَ الصَّالِحَاتِ فَاُو۬لٰٓئِكَ لَهُمُ الدَّرَجَاتُ الْعُلٰىۙ

Waman ya/tihi mu/minan qad AAamila assalihatifaola-ika lahumu addarajatu alAAula

Gardens of perpetual abode, beneath which rivers flow, they abiding eternally therein. And that is the reward of him who purifies himself.)

جَنَّاتُ عَدْنٍ تَجْر۪ي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْاَنْهَارُ خَالِد۪ينَ ف۪يهَاۜ وَذٰلِكَ جَزٰٓؤُ۬ا مَنْ تَزَكّٰى۟

Jannatu AAadnin tajree min tahtihaal-anharu khalideena feeha wathalikajazao man tazakka

And We instructed Moses: “Travel thou by night with My servants; and strike thou for them a dry path in the sea, neither fearing overtaking nor being afraid.”

وَلَقَدْ اَوْحَيْنَٓا اِلٰى مُوسٰٓى اَنْ اَسْرِ بِعِبَاد۪ي فَاضْرِبْ لَهُمْ طَر۪يقاً فِي الْبَحْرِ يَبَساًۚ لَا تَخَافُ دَرَكاً وَلَا تَخْشٰى

Walaqad awhayna ilamoosa an asri biAAibadee fadriblahum tareeqan fee albahri yabasan la takhafudarakan wala takhsha

And Pharaoh followed them with his forces, and there covered them of the sea what covered them.

فَاَتْبَعَهُمْ فِرْعَوْنُ بِجُنُودِه۪ فَغَشِيَهُمْ مِنَ الْيَمِّ مَا غَشِيَهُمْۜ

FaatbaAAahum firAAawnu bijunoodihifaghashiyahum mina alyammi ma ghashiyahum

And Pharaoh led his people astray, and did not guide.

وَاَضَلَّ فِرْعَوْنُ قَوْمَهُ وَمَا هَدٰى

Waadalla firAAawnu qawmahu wamahada

O children of Israel: We delivered you from your enemy; and We made an appointment with you on the right side of the mount; and We sent down upon you manna and quails:

يَا بَن۪ٓي اِسْرَٓائ۪لَ قَدْ اَنْجَيْنَاكُمْ مِنْ عَدُوِّكُمْ وَوٰعَدْنَاكُمْ جَانِبَ الطُّورِ الْاَيْمَنَ وَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَنَّ وَالسَّلْوٰى

Ya banee isra-eela qad anjaynakummin AAaduwwikum wawaAAadnakum janiba attoorial-aymana wanazzalna AAalaykumu almanna wassalwa

“Eat of the good things that We have provided you, and transgress not therein lest My wrath descend upon you; and he upon whom My wrath descends has fallen.”

كُلُوا مِنْ طَيِّبَاتِ مَا رَزَقْنَاكُمْ وَلَا تَطْغَوْا ف۪يهِ فَيَحِلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ غَضَب۪يۚ وَمَنْ يَحْلِلْ عَلَيْهِ غَضَب۪ي فَقَدْ هَوٰى

Kuloo min tayyibati marazaqnakum wala tatghaw feehi fayahillaAAalaykum ghadabee waman yahlil AAalayhi ghadabeefaqad hawa

And I am all-forgiving towards him who repents and believes and works righteousness; then is he guided.

وَاِنّ۪ي لَغَفَّارٌ لِمَنْ تَابَ وَاٰمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحاً ثُمَّ اهْتَدٰى

Wa-innee laghaffarun liman tabawaamana waAAamila salihan thumma ihtada

“And what made thee hasten from thy people, O Moses?”

وَمَٓا اَعْجَلَكَ عَنْ قَوْمِكَ يَا مُوسٰى

Wama aAAjalaka AAan qawmika yamoosa

Said he: “They were close, in my footsteps, so I hastened to Thee, my Lord, that Thou be pleased.”

قَالَ هُمْ اُو۬لَٓاءِ عَلٰٓى اَثَر۪ي وَعَجِلْتُ اِلَيْكَ رَبِّ لِتَرْضٰى

Qala hum ola-i AAalaatharee waAAajiltu ilayka rabbi litarda

He said: “We have subjected thy people to means of denial in thy absence, and the Sāmiriyy has led them astray.”

قَالَ فَاِنَّا قَدْ فَتَنَّا قَوْمَكَ مِنْ بَعْدِكَ وَاَضَلَّهُمُ السَّامِرِيُّ

Qala fa-inna qad fatannaqawmaka min baAAdika waadallahumu assamiriy

So Moses returned to his people, wrathful and grieved. He said: “O my people: did not your Lord promise you a fair promise? Was the covenant long in coming for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord should descend upon you, so failed in your promise to me?”

فَرَجَعَ مُوسٰٓى اِلٰى قَوْمِه۪ غَضْبَانَ اَسِفاًۚ قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ اَلَمْ يَعِدْكُمْ رَبُّكُمْ وَعْداً حَسَناًۜ اَفَطَالَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْعَهْدُ اَمْ اَرَدْتُمْ اَنْ يَحِلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ غَضَبٌ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ فَاَخْلَفْتُمْ مَوْعِد۪ي

FarajaAAa moosa ila qawmihighadbana asifan qala ya qawmi alamyaAAidkum rabbukum waAAdan hasanan afatalaAAalaykumu alAAahdu am aradtum an yahilla AAalaykum ghadabunmin rabbikum faakhlaftum mawAAidee

They said: “We failed not to keep our promise to thee of our own accord, but we were given to bear burdens of the adornment of the people — so we hurled them. (And thus the Sāmiriyy cast,

قَالُوا مَٓا اَخْلَفْنَا مَوْعِدَكَ بِمَلْكِنَا وَلٰكِنَّا حُمِّلْـنَٓا اَوْزَاراً مِنْ ز۪ينَةِ الْقَوْمِ فَقَذَفْنَاهَا فَكَذٰلِكَ اَلْقَى السَّامِرِيُّۙ

Qaloo ma akhlafnamawAAidaka bimalkina walakinna hummilnaawzaran min zeenati alqawmi faqathafnahafakathalika alqa assamiriy

And he brought forth for them a calf as a body that lowed; and they said: “This is your god, and the god of Moses, but he forgot.”

فَاَخْرَجَ لَهُمْ عِجْلاً جَسَداً لَهُ خُوَارٌ فَقَالُوا هٰذَٓا اِلٰهُكُمْ وَاِلٰهُ مُوسٰى فَنَسِيَۜ

Faakhraja lahum AAijlan jasadan lahu khuwarunfaqaloo hatha ilahukum wa-ilahu moosafanasiy

Did they then not see that it returned no word to them, nor possessed for them harm or benefit!

اَفَلَا يَرَوْنَ اَلَّا يَرْجِعُ اِلَيْهِمْ قَوْلاًۙ وَلَا يَمْلِكُ لَهُمْ ضَراًّ وَلَا نَفْعاً۟

Afala yarawna alla yarjiAAuilayhim qawlan wala yamliku lahum darran walanafAAa

And Aaron had said to them before: “O my people: you are but subjected to means of denial thereby, and your Lord is the Almighty; so follow me, and obey my command.”

وَلَقَدْ قَالَ لَهُمْ هٰرُونُ مِنْ قَبْلُ يَا قَوْمِ اِنَّمَا فُتِنْتُمْ بِه۪ۚ وَاِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ الرَّحْمٰنُ فَاتَّبِعُون۪ي وَاَط۪يعُٓوا اَمْر۪ي

Walaqad qala lahum haroonu minqablu ya qawmi innama futintum bihi wa-innarabbakumu arrahmanu fattabiAAooneewaateeAAoo amree

They said: “We will not cease to be devoted to it until Moses returns to us.”)

قَالُوا لَنْ نَبْرَحَ عَلَيْهِ عَاكِف۪ينَ حَتّٰى يَرْجِعَ اِلَيْنَا مُوسٰى

Qaloo lan nabraha AAalayhi AAakifeenahatta yarjiAAa ilayna moosa

He said: “O Aaron: what prevented thee, when thou sawest them going astray,

قَالَ يَا هٰرُونُ مَا مَنَعَكَ اِذْ رَاَيْتَهُمْ ضَلُّواۙ

Qala ya haroonu mamanaAAaka ith raaytahum dalloo

“From following me? Didst thou then disobey my command?”

اَلَّا تَتَّبِعَنِۜ اَفَعَصَيْتَ اَمْر۪ي

Alla tattabiAAani afaAAasaytaamree

Said he: “O son of my mother: seize thou me not by my beard, nor by my head! I feared lest thou say: ‘Thou hast caused division among the children of Israel, and hast not observed my word.’”

قَالَ يَبْنَؤُ۬مَّ لَا تَأْخُذْ بِلِحْيَت۪ي وَلَا بِرَأْس۪يۚ اِنّ۪ي خَش۪يتُ اَنْ تَقُولَ فَرَّقْتَ بَيْنَ بَن۪ٓي اِسْرَٓائ۪لَ وَلَمْ تَرْقُبْ قَوْل۪ي

Qala yabnaomma la ta/khuthbilihyatee wala bira/see innee khasheetu an taqoolafarraqta bayna banee isra-eela walam tarqub qawlee

He said: “And what is thy case, O Sāmiriyy?”

قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكَ يَا سَامِرِيُّ

Qala fama khatbuka yasamiriy

Said he: “I saw what they saw not; so I took a handful from the track of the Messenger, and did throw it; and thus my soul enticed me.”

قَالَ بَصُرْتُ بِمَا لَمْ يَبْصُرُوا بِه۪ فَقَبَضْتُ قَبْضَةً مِنْ اَثَرِ الرَّسُولِ فَنَبَذْتُهَا وَكَذٰلِكَ سَوَّلَتْ ل۪ي نَفْس۪ي

Qala basurtu bima lamyabsuroo bihi faqabadtu qabdatan min athariarrasooli fanabathtuha wakathalikasawwalat lee nafsee

He said: “Then go thou, for in this life it is for thee to say: ‘Outcast!’ And there is for thee an appointment thou canst not fail to keep. And look thou upon thy god to which thou remainedst devoted! We will burn it; then will we scatter it in the sea with a blast.”

قَالَ فَاذْهَبْ فَاِنَّ لَكَ فِي الْحَيٰوةِ اَنْ تَقُولَ لَا مِسَاسَۖ وَاِنَّ لَكَ مَوْعِداً لَنْ تُخْلَفَهُۚ وَانْظُرْ اِلٰٓى اِلٰهِكَ الَّذ۪ي ظَلْتَ عَلَيْهِ عَاكِفاًۜ لَنُحَرِّقَنَّهُ ثُمَّ لَنَنْسِفَنَّهُ فِي الْيَمِّ نَسْفاً

Qala fathhab fa-innalaka fee alhayati an taqoola la misasawa-inna laka mawAAidan lan tukhlafahu wanthurila ilahika allathee thaltaAAalayhi AAakifan lanuharriqannahu thummalanansifannahu fee alyammi nasfa

Your God is but God. There is no god save He. He encompasses all things in knowledge.

اِنَّـمَٓا اِلٰهُكُمُ اللّٰهُ الَّذ۪ي لَٓا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَۜ وَسِعَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عِلْماً

Innama ilahukumu Allahuallathee la ilaha illa huwa wasiAAakulla shay-in AAilma

Thus do We relate to thee from reports of what has gone before, and have given thee a remembrance from Us.

كَذٰلِكَ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ اَنْـبَٓاءِ مَا قَدْ سَبَقَۚ وَقَدْ اٰتَيْنَاكَ مِنْ لَدُنَّا ذِكْراًۚ

Kathalika naqussu AAalayka minanba-i ma qad sabaqa waqad ataynakamin ladunna thikra

Whoso turns away from it, he will bear a burden on the Day of Resurrection,

مَنْ اَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ فَاِنَّهُ يَحْمِلُ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ وِزْراًۙ

Man aAArada AAanhu fa-innahu yahmiluyawma alqiyamati wizra

They abiding eternally therein; and evil is it for them on the Day of Resurrection as a load,

خَالِد۪ينَ ف۪يهِۜ وَسَٓاءَ لَهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ حِمْلاًۙ

Khalideena feehi wasaa lahumyawma alqiyamati himla

The day the Trumpet is blown. And We will assemble the lawbreakers, that day, white-eyed,

يَوْمَ يُنْفَخُ فِي الصُّورِ وَنَحْشُرُ الْمُجْرِم۪ينَ يَوْمَئِذٍ زُرْقاًۚ

Yawma yunfakhu fee assooriwanahshuru almujrimeena yawma-ithin zurqa

Whispering among themselves: “You tarried only ten.”

يَتَخَافَتُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ اِنْ لَبِثْتُمْ اِلَّا عَشْراً

Yatakhafatoona baynahum in labithtumilla AAashra

We best know what they will say, when their exemplars in the path will say: “You tarried only a day.”

نَحْنُ اَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ اِذْ يَقُولُ اَمْثَلُهُمْ طَر۪يقَةً اِنْ لَبِثْتُمْ اِلَّا يَوْماً۟

Nahnu aAAlamu bima yaqooloonaith yaqoolu amthaluhum tareeqatan in labithtum illayawma

And they ask thee about the mountains. Say thou: “My Lord will scatter them with a blast

وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ الْجِبَالِ فَقُلْ يَنْسِفُهَا رَبّ۪ي نَسْفاًۙ

Wayas-aloonaka AAani aljibali faqulyansifuha rabbee nasfa

“And leave it a level plain.”

فَيَذَرُهَا قَاعاً صَفْصَفاًۙ

Fayatharuha qaAAan safsafa

Thou wilt see therein neither deviation nor bend.

لَا تَرٰى ف۪يهَا عِوَجاً وَلَٓا اَمْتاً

La tara feeha AAiwajanwala amta

That day will they follow the Caller having no deviation; and voices will be stilled before the Almighty, and thou wilt hear not save a murmur.

يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَّبِعُونَ الدَّاعِيَ لَا عِوَجَ لَهُۚ وَخَشَعَتِ الْاَصْوَاتُ لِلرَّحْمٰنِ فَلَا تَسْمَعُ اِلَّا هَمْساً

Yawma-ithin yattabiAAoona addaAAiyala AAiwaja lahu wakhashaAAati al-aswatu lirrahmanifala tasmaAAu illa hamsa

That day no intercession will avail save one whom the Almighty has given leave and with whose word He is pleased.

يَوْمَئِذٍ لَا تَنْفَعُ الشَّفَاعَةُ اِلَّا مَنْ اَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمٰنُ وَرَضِيَ لَهُ قَوْلاً

Yawma-ithin la tanfaAAu ashshafaAAatuilla man athina lahu arrahmanuwaradiya lahu qawla

He knows what is before them and what following them, and they do not encompass it in knowledge.

يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ اَيْد۪يهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَلَا يُح۪يطُونَ بِه۪ عِلْماً

YaAAlamu ma bayna aydeehim wamakhalfahum wala yuheetoona bihi AAilma

And faces will be humble before the Living, the Eternal. And he will have failed who carries injustice.

وَعَنَتِ الْوُجُوهُ لِلْحَيِّ الْقَيُّومِۜ وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ حَمَلَ ظُلْماً

WaAAanati alwujoohu lilhayyialqayyoomi waqad khaba man hamala thulma

And whoso does righteous deeds and is a believer: he fears neither injustice nor deprivation.

وَمَنْ يَعْمَلْ مِنَ الصَّالِحَاتِ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَلَا يَخَافُ ظُلْماً وَلَا هَضْماً

Waman yaAAmal mina assalihatiwahuwa mu/minun fala yakhafu thulmanwala hadma

And thus have We sent it down as an Arabic recitation and expounded therein warnings, that they might be in prudent fear, or it cause in them remembrance.

وَكَذٰلِكَ اَنْزَلْنَاهُ قُرْاٰناً عَرَبِياًّ وَصَرَّفْنَا ف۪يهِ مِنَ الْوَع۪يدِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ اَوْ يُحْدِثُ لَهُمْ ذِكْراً

Wakathalika anzalnahu qur-ananAAarabiyyan wasarrafna feehi mina alwaAAeedilaAAallahum yattaqoona aw yuhdithu lahum thikra

And exalted be God, the True King! And hasten thou not with the recitation before its revelation to thee be complete; and say thou: “My Lord: increase Thou me in knowledge.”

فَتَعَالَى اللّٰهُ الْمَلِكُ الْحَقُّۚ وَلَا تَعْجَلْ بِالْقُرْاٰنِ مِنْ قَبْلِ اَنْ يُقْضٰٓى اِلَيْكَ وَحْيُهُۘ وَقُلْ رَبِّ زِدْن۪ي عِلْماً

FataAAala Allahualmaliku alhaqqu wala taAAjal bilqur-animin qabli an yuqda ilayka wahyuhu waqul rabbizidnee AAilma

And We made a covenant with Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.

وَلَقَدْ عَهِدْنَٓا اِلٰٓى اٰدَمَ مِنْ قَبْلُ فَنَسِيَ وَلَمْ نَجِدْ لَهُ عَزْماً۟

Walaqad AAahidna ila adamamin qablu fanasiya walam najid lahu AAazma

And when We said to the angels: “Submit to Adam,” then they submitted. Not so Iblīs; he refused.

وَاِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلٰٓئِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِاٰدَمَ فَسَجَدُٓوا اِلَّٓا اِبْل۪يسَۜ اَبٰى

Wa-ith qulna lilmala-ikatiosjudoo li-adama fasajadoo illa ibleesa aba

Then We said: “O Adam: this is an enemy to thee and to thy wife. Then let him not turn you out of the garden, that thou be wretched.

فَقُلْنَا يَٓا اٰدَمُ اِنَّ هٰذَا عَدُوٌّ لَكَ وَلِزَوْجِكَ فَلَا يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فَتَشْقٰى

Faqulna ya adamu innahatha AAaduwwun laka walizawjika falayukhrijannakuma mina aljannati fatashqa

“It is for thee to be neither hungry nor naked therein,

اِنَّ لَكَ اَلَّا تَجُوعَ ف۪يهَا وَلَا تَعْرٰىۙ

Inna laka alla tajooAAa feehawala taAAra

“And that thou suffer neither thirst therein, nor the heat of the sun.”

وَاَنَّكَ لَا تَظْمَؤُ۬ا ف۪يهَا وَلَا تَضْحٰى

Waannaka la tathmaofeeha wala tadha

Then the satan whispered to him, saying: “O Adam: shall I direct thee to the Tree of Eternity and a dominion that decays not?”

فَوَسْوَسَ اِلَيْهِ الشَّيْطَانُ قَالَ يَٓا اٰدَمُ هَلْ اَدُلُّكَ عَلٰى شَجَرَةِ الْخُلْدِ وَمُلْكٍ لَا يَبْلٰى

Fawaswasa ilayhi ashshaytanuqala ya adamu hal adulluka AAalashajarati alkhuldi wamulkin la yabla

And they ate thereof, and their shame became clear to them; and they began to draw over them of the leaves of the garden; and Adam opposed his Lord, so he erred.

فَاَكَلَا مِنْهَا فَبَدَتْ لَهُمَا سَوْاٰتُهُمَا وَطَفِقَا يَخْصِفَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا مِنْ وَرَقِ الْجَنَّةِۘ وَعَصٰٓى اٰدَمُ رَبَّهُ فَغَوٰىۖ

Faakala minha fabadat lahumasaw-atuhuma watafiqa yakhsifaniAAalayhima min waraqi aljannati waAAasa adamurabbahu faghawa

Then his Lord chose him, and turned towards him, and guided.

ثُمَّ اجْتَبٰيهُ رَبُّهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْهِ وَهَدٰى

Thumma ijtabahu rabbuhu fatabaAAalayhi wahada

He said: “Get you down from it all together, an enemy to one another. And if there comes to you guidance from Me, then whoso follows My guidance, he will neither go astray, nor will he be wretched.

قَالَ اهْبِطَا مِنْهَا جَم۪يعاً بَعْضُكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّۚ فَاِمَّا يَأْتِيَنَّكُمْ مِنّ۪ي هُدًى فَمَنِ اتَّـبَعَ هُدَايَ فَلَا يَضِلُّ وَلَا يَشْقٰى

Qala ihbita minhajameeAAan baAAdukum libaAAdin AAaduwwun fa-immaya/tiyannakum minnee hudan famani ittabaAAa hudaya falayadillu wala yashqa

“But whoso turns away from My remembrance: he will have a straitened life, and We will gather him blind on the Day of Resurrection.”

وَمَنْ اَعْرَضَ عَنْ ذِكْر۪ي فَاِنَّ لَهُ مَع۪يشَةً ضَنْكاً وَنَحْشُرُهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ اَعْمٰى

Waman aAArada AAan thikreefa-inna lahu maAAeeshatan danka wanahshuruhuyawma alqiyamati aAAma

He will say: “My Lord: why hast Thou raised me blind, when I was seeing?”

قَالَ رَبِّ لِمَ حَشَرْتَـن۪ٓي اَعْمٰى وَقَدْ كُنْتُ بَص۪يراً

Qala rabbi lima hashartaneeaAAma waqad kuntu baseera

God will say: “Thus Our proofs came to thee, and thou didst forget them; so thus art thou this day forgotten.”

قَالَ كَذٰلِكَ اَتَتْكَ اٰيَاتُنَا فَـنَس۪يتَهَاۚ وَكَذٰلِكَ الْيَوْمَ تُنْسٰى

Qala kathalika atatka ayatunafanaseetaha wakathalika alyawma tunsa

And thus do We reward him who commits excess, and believes not in the proofs of his Lord; and the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.

وَكَذٰلِكَ نَجْز۪ي مَنْ اَسْرَفَ وَلَمْ يُؤْمِنْ بِاٰيَاتِ رَبِّه۪ۜ وَلَعَذَابُ الْاٰخِرَةِ اَشَدُّ وَاَبْقٰى

Wakathalika najzee man asrafa walamyu/min bi-ayati rabbihi walaAAathabu al-akhiratiashaddu waabqa

Does it not then guide them how many generations We destroyed before them in whose dwellings they walk? In that are proofs for possessors of intelligence.

اَفَلَمْ يَهْدِ لَهُمْ كَمْ اَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُمْ مِنَ الْقُرُونِ يَمْشُونَ ف۪ي مَسَاكِنِهِمْۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِاُو۬لِي النُّهٰى۟

Afalam yahdi lahum kam ahlaknaqablahum mina alqurooni yamshoona fee masakinihim inna feethalika laayatin li-olee annuha

And were it not for a word that preceded from thy Lord and a stated term it would have been requisite.

وَلَوْلَا كَلِمَةٌ سَبَقَتْ مِنْ رَبِّكَ لَكَانَ لِزَاماً وَاَجَلٌ مُسَمًّىۜ

Walawla kalimatun sabaqat minrabbika lakana lizaman waajalun musamma

So be thou patient over what they say, and give thou glory with the praise of thy Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting. And some periods of the night give thou glory; and at the ends of the day, that thou mightest be satisfied.

فَاصْبِرْ عَلٰى مَا يَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ غُرُوبِهَاۚ وَمِنْ اٰنَٓائِ الَّيْلِ فَسَبِّـحْ وَاَطْرَافَ النَّهَارِ لَعَلَّكَ تَرْضٰى

Fasbir AAala mayaqooloona wasabbih bihamdi rabbika qabla tulooAAiashshamsi waqabla ghuroobiha wamin ana-iallayli fasabbih waatrafa annaharilaAAallaka tarda

And extend thou not thine eyes towards what We have granted some among them to enjoy — the flower of the life of this world — that We might subject them to means of denial therein; and the provision of thy Lord is better and more enduring.

وَلَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ اِلٰى مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِه۪ٓ اَزْوَاجاً مِنْهُمْ زَهْرَةَ الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَا لِنَفْتِنَهُمْ ف۪يهِۜ وَرِزْقُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ وَاَبْقٰى

Wala tamuddanna AAaynayka ilama mattaAAna bihi azwajan minhum zahrata alhayatiaddunya linaftinahum feehi warizqu rabbika khayrunwaabqa

And enjoin thou upon thy people the duty, and be thou steadfast therein. We ask thee not for provision; We provide for thee. And the final outcome is for those of prudent fear.

وَأْمُرْ اَهْلَكَ بِالصَّلٰوةِ وَاصْطَبِرْ عَلَيْهَاۜ لَا نَسْـَٔلُكَ رِزْقاًۜ نَحْنُ نَرْزُقُكَۜ وَالْعَاقِبَةُ لِلتَّقْوٰى

Wa/mur ahlaka bissalatiwastabir AAalayha la nas-alukarizqan nahnu narzuquka walAAaqibatu littaqwa

And they say: “Oh, that he would but bring us a proof from his Lord!” Has there not come to them clear evidence of what is in the former scriptures?

وَقَالُوا لَوْلَا يَأْت۪ينَا بِاٰيَةٍ مِنْ رَبِّه۪ۜ اَوَلَمْ تَأْتِهِمْ بَيِّنَةُ مَا فِي الصُّحُفِ الْاُو۫لٰى

Waqaloo lawla ya/teenabi-ayatin min rabbihi awa lam ta/tihim bayyinatu mafee assuhufi al-oola

And had We destroyed them with a punishment before him, they would have said: “Our Lord: oh, that Thou hadst but sent to us a messenger, so we might have followed Thy proofs before we were humiliated and disgraced!”

وَلَوْ اَنَّٓا اَهْلَكْنَاهُمْ بِعَذَابٍ مِنْ قَبْلِه۪ لَقَالُوا رَبَّنَا لَوْلَٓا اَرْسَلْتَ اِلَيْنَا رَسُولاً فَنَتَّبِعَ اٰيَاتِكَ مِنْ قَبْلِ اَنْ نَذِلَّ وَنَخْزٰى

Walaw anna ahlaknahum biAAathabinmin qablihi laqaloo rabbana lawla arsaltailayna rasoolan fanattabiAAa ayatika minqabli an nathilla wanakhza

Say thou: “All are waiting — so wait; and you will come to know who are the companions of the even path, and who is guided.”

قُلْ كُلٌّ مُتَرَبِّصٌ فَتَرَبَّصُواۚ فَسَتَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ اَصْحَابُ الصِّرَاطِ السَّوِيِّ وَمَنِ اهْتَدٰى

Qul kullun mutarabbisun fatarabbasoofasataAAlamoona man as-habu assiratiassawiyyi wamani ihtada
