In the name of God, the Almighty, the Merciful.
Bismi Allahi arrahmani arraheem
And what will convey to thee what the Inevitable Reality is?
Wama adraka ma alhaqqa
Thamūd and ʿĀd denied the Calamity.
Kaththabat thamoodu waAAadun bilqariAAa
Then as for Thamūd: they were destroyed by the overpowering blast.
Faamma thamoodu faohlikoo bittaghiya
And as for ʿĀd: they were destroyed by a howling, raging wind
Waamma AAadun faohlikoo bireehinsarsarin AAatiya
Which He compelled against them seven nights and eight days without let; and thou mightest see the people therein lying prostrate like stumps of hollow date-palms.
Sakhkharaha AAalayhim sabAAa layalinwathamaniyata ayyamin husooman fataraalqawma feeha sarAAa kaannahum aAAjazunakhlin khawiya
Then seest thou of them any remnant?
Fahal tara lahum min baqiya
And there came Pharaoh — and those before him, and the cities thrown down — with offence,
Wajaa firAAawnu waman qablahu walmu/tafikatubilkhati-a
And they opposed the messenger of their Lord, but He seized them with a surpassing grip.
FaAAasaw rasoola rabbihim faakhathahumakhthatan rabiya
When the water had burst all bounds, We bore you in the ship
Inna lamma taghaalmao hamalnakum fee aljariya
That We might make it a reminder for you, and that a conscious ear might be conscious of it.
LinajAAalaha lakum tathkiratanwataAAiyaha othunun waAAiya
Then when the Trumpet is blown with a single blast,
Fa-itha nufikha fee assoorinafkhatun wahida
And the earth and the mountains are lifted up and levelled with a single blow,
Wahumilati al-ardu waljibalufadukkata dakkatan wahida
Then, that day, the Event will befall,
Fayawma-ithin waqaAAati alwaqiAAa
And the sky be split asunder for it, that day, is frail,
Wanshaqqati assamaofahiya yawma-ithin wahiya
And the angels on its sides; and there will bear the Throne of thy Lord above them, that day, eight.
Walmalaku AAala arja-ihawayahmilu AAarsha rabbika fawqahum yawma-ithin thamaniya
That day, you will be presented; no secret among you will be concealed.
Yawma-ithin tuAAradoona latakhfa minkum khafiya
And as for him who is given his writ in his right hand, he will say: “Here, read my writ!
Faamma man ootiya kitabahubiyameenihi fayaqoolu haomu iqraoo kitabiyah
“I knew that I should meet my reckoning.”
Innee thanantu annee mulaqinhisabiyah
“Eat and drink with satisfaction for what you sent ahead in days past.”
Kuloo washraboo hanee-an bimaaslaftum fee al-ayyami alkhaliya
And as for him who is given his writ in his left hand, he will say: “Would that I had not been given my writ
Waamma man ootiya kitabahubishimalihi fayaqoolu ya laytanee lam oota kitabiyah
“And had not known what is my reckoning!
Walam adri ma hisabiyah
“Would that it had been the end!
Ya laytaha kanati alqadiya
“Then into a chain the length whereof is seventy cubits insert him!”
Thumma fee silsilatin tharAAuhasabAAoona thiraAAan faslukooh
He believed not in God, the Great,
Innahu kana la yu/minu billahialAAatheem
And encouraged not the feeding of the needy
Wala yahuddu AAalataAAami almiskeen
So there is for him here, this day, no loyal friend,
Falaysa lahu alyawma hahuna hameem
Nor food save of foul pus,
Wala taAAamun illamin ghisleen
That none eat save the offenders.
La ya/kuluhu illa alkhati-oon
Then do I swear by what you see
Fala oqsimu bima tubsiroon
It is the word of a noble messenger,
Innahu laqawlu rasoolin kareem
And it is not the word of a poet — little do you believe —
Wama huwa biqawli shaAAirinqaleelan ma tu/minoon
Nor the word of a soothsayer — little do you take heed —
Wala biqawli kahinin qaleelanma tathakkaroon
A revelation from the Lord of All Creation!
Tanzeelun min rabbi alAAalameen
(And had he ascribed to Us any sayings,
Walaw taqawwala AAalayna baAAdaal-aqaweel
We would have seized him by the right hand.
Laakhathna minhu bilyameen
Then would We have cut from him the aorta,
Thumma laqataAAna minhualwateen
And not one of you could have protected him.)
Fama minkum min ahadin AAanhu hajizeen
And it is a reminder to those of prudent fear;
Wa-innahu latathkiratun lilmuttaqeen
(And We know that among you are deniers)
Wa-inna lanaAAlamu anna minkum mukaththibeen
And it will be a sorrow to the false claimers of guidance;
Wa-innahu lahasratun AAala alkafireen
So give thou glory with the name of thy Lord, the Great!
Fasabbih bismi rabbika alAAatheem
