89. Surah Al-Fajr
The Dawn

In the name of God, the Almighty, the Merciful.

Bismi Allahi arrahmani arraheem

By the dawn,

Walfajr

And ten nights,

Walayalin AAashr

And the even and the odd,

WashshafAAi walwatr

And the night when he departs!

Wallayli itha yasr

Is there not in that an oath for one of intelligence?

Hal fee thalika qasamun lithee hijr

Hast thou not considered how thy Lord did with ʿĀd,

Alam tara kayfa faAAala rabbuka biAAad

Iram of the pillars,

Irama thati alAAimad

The like of which had never been created in the land,

Allatee lam yukhlaq mithluha fee albilad

And Thamūd, who hollowed the rocks in the valley,

Wathamooda allatheena jaboo assakhrabilwad

And Pharaoh, the Lord of Stakes

WafirAAawna thee al-awtad

Who transgressed all bounds in the lands,

Allatheena taghaw fee albilad

And increased corruption therein?

Faaktharoo feeha alfasad

So thy Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.

Fasabba AAalayhim rabbuka sawtaAAathab

Thy Lord is ever watchful.

Inna rabbaka labilmirsad

And as for man, when his Lord tries him, and honours him, and favours him, he says: “My Lord has honoured me.”

Faamma al-insanu itha maibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu rabbeeakraman

But when He tries him, and straitens his provision, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.”

Waamma itha ma ibtalahufaqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbee ahanan

No, indeed! The truth is, you honour not the fatherless,

Kalla bal la tukrimoonaalyateem

Nor encourage one another to feed the needy,

Wala tahaddoona AAala taAAamialmiskeen

But consume the inheritance with greed,

Wata/kuloona atturatha aklanlamma

And love wealth with much love.

Watuhibboona almala hubbanjamma

No, indeed! When the earth is ground to powder,

Kalla itha dukkati al-ardudakkan dakka

And thy Lord comes — and the angels, rank upon rank —

Wajaa rabbuka walmalaku saffansaffa

And Gehenna, that day, is brought: that day will man take heed; but how will the reminder be for him?

Wajee-a yawma-ithin bijahannamayawma-ithin yatathakkaru al-insanu waannalahu aththikra

He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead for my life!”

Yaqoolu ya laytanee qaddamtu lihayatee

And — that day — none will punish as His punishment,

Fayawma-ithin la yuAAaththibuAAathabahu ahad

And none will bind as His binding.

Wala yoothiqu wathaqahu ahad

“O thou soul at peace:

Ya ayyatuha annafsualmutma-inna

“Return thou to thy Lord — well-pleased and well-pleasing,

IrjiAAee ila rabbiki radiyatanmardiyya

“And enter thou among My servants.

Fadkhulee fee AAibadee

“And enter thou My Garden.”

Wadkhulee jannatee
