O mankind: serve your Lord who created you, and those before you, that you might be in prudent fear;
The Qur'an addresses the believers 89 times, by name. It addresses everyone 20 times. These are those 20.
What is said to everyone is different from what is said to the believers. There are no rules here. The subjects are creation and dependence: serve the Lord who created you and those before you (2:21), eat of what is lawful in the earth (2:168), fear the Lord who created you from one soul (4:1), you are the ones in need of God (35:15). Twice the argument is that difference itself was intended: you were made from a male and a female and set into nations and tribes so that you would know one another (49:13).
The formula is not reserved for God. Solomon uses it once, standing in front of people he has just inherited a kingdom from: “O mankind, we have been taught the speech of birds” (27:16).
O mankind: serve your Lord who created you, and those before you, that you might be in prudent fear;
O mankind: eat of what is in the earth lawful and good, and follow not the footsteps of the satan; he is to you an open enemy.
O mankind: be in prudent fear of your Lord who created you from one soul; and created from it its mate, and scattered from them many men and women; and be in prudent fear of God through whom, and through kinship, you ask one of another; God is over you, watching.
O mankind: the Messenger has come to you with the truth from your Lord; so believe, it is better for you. And if you deny, to God belongs what is in the heavens and the earth; and God is knowing and wise.
O mankind: there has come to you evidence from your Lord; and We have sent down to you a clear light.
(Say thou: “O mankind: I am the messenger of God to you all together — to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. There is no god save He. He gives life and He gives death.” So believe in God and His messenger, the unschooled prophet, who believes in God and His words; and follow him, that you might be guided.)
Then when He delivers them, they rebel in the earth without cause.) O mankind: your sectarian zealotry is but against yourselves, — the enjoyment of the life of this world — then to Us is your return and We will inform you of what you did.
O mankind: there has come to you an admonition from your Lord, and healing for what is in the breasts, and guidance, and a mercy for the believers.
Say thou: “O mankind: if you are in doubt about my doctrine: I serve not those whom you serve besides God; but I serve God, who will take you; and I am commanded to be of the believers;
Say thou: “O mankind: the truth has come to you from your Lord; and whoso is guided, he is but guided for his soul; and whoso strays, he but strays against it; and I am not a guardian over you.”
O mankind: be in prudent fear of your Lord! The convulsion of the Hour is a tremendous thing.
O mankind: if you are in doubt about the Resurrection, then: We created you from dust; then from a sperm-drop; then from a clinging thing; then from a fleshy lump formed and unformed — that We might make plain to you. And We settle in the wombs what We will to a stated term; then We bring you forth as a child; then that you should reach your maturity. And among you is he who is taken. And among you is he who is sent back to the most abject age, so that he knows not, after knowledge, anything. And thou seest the earth lifeless; then when We send down upon it water it quivers and swells and grows every delightful kind,
Say thou: “O mankind: I am only a clear warner to you.”
O mankind: a similitude is struck, so listen to it: — those to whom you call, besides God, will never create a fly though they gather together for it. And if the fly snatch away something from them, they could not recover it from it; weak are the seeker and the sought!
And Solomon inherited from David; and he said: “O mankind: we have been taught the speech of birds, and have been given of every thing; this is the clear favour.”
O mankind: be in prudent fear of your Lord, and fear the day a father will not avail his child, nor will a child avail his father anything. The promise of God is true, so let not the life of this world delude you; and let not the Deluder delude you about God.
O mankind: remember the favour of God upon you. Is there any creator, other than God, who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? There is no god save He; how then are you deluded?
O mankind: the promise of God is true; so let not the life of this world delude you; and let not the Deluder delude you about God.
O mankind: you are in need of God; and God, He is the Free from Need, the Praiseworthy.
O mankind: We have created you from a male and a female, and have made you nations and tribes that you might know one another. The most noble of you in the sight of God is he of you most in prudent fear; God is knowing and aware.
