For it is that they were averse to what God sent down! So He made vain their deeds.
That is because they hate what Allah has sent down, so He has made their actions come to nothing.

This, because they detest what Allah has revealed, and so He renders all their actions fruitless. (13:17). ('Habet' = Undigested food that fails to provide nourishment).

A disposition rightfully earned for their averted state of mind and mental attitude of persistently opposing all that Allah has revealed in conformity with truth and in agreement with reality; and so He doomed their hopes to disappointment and their deeds to worthlessness.
That is because, they denied the word of God and in return God did not accept their charitable actions .
That is because they hate that which Allâh has sent down (this Qur’ân and Islâmic laws, etc.); so He has made their deeds fruitless.

That is for that they hate what Allah has sent down, so He has frustrated their deeds.
This shall befall them, because they have rejected with abhorrence that which God hath revealed: Wherefore their works shall become of no avail.
That is because they hate the Revelation of Allah so He has made their actions fruitless.
That is because they consider the revelations of Allâh a burden. That is why He has made their works all go waste.
That is because they loathed what Allah has sent down, so He made their works fail.
