When their messengers came to them with clear signs, they exulted at what they had of knowledge; but there surrounded them that whereat they mocked.

When their Messengers brought them the Clear Signs, they exulted in the knowledge they had and then were engulfed by the very things they mocked.
Then, when their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they were content with what they already had of the knowledge. And that which they ridiculed became their doom.
For when their Messengers came to them with all evidence of the Truth, they took delight in the knowledge they possessed. And the very thing they used to mock came on to pay a visit to them. (They took pride in their knowledge and skill and ridiculed the warnings of the Messengers that wrong Systems crash down however smartly they might be run).

And so, on all sides are they beset by the same material and immaterial things they had turned in to ridicule.
When I sent them My Prophets with clear signs and proofs, they stuck to their own style of life and social systems. The very things that they ridiculed, were the cause of their fall.
Then when their Messengers came to them with clear proofs, they were glad (and proud) with that which they had of the knowledge (of worldly things). And that at which they used to mock, surrounded them (i.e. the punishment).
