And they ask thee to hasten the evil before the good when there have passed away before them exemplary punishments. And thy Lord is full of forgiveness towards men despite their injustice; but thy Lord is severe in retribution.

They want you to hasten the bad rather than the good when examples of punishment are there before them in the past. Your Lord has forgiveness for people for their wrongdoing; but your Lord is also severe in retribution.
And they hasten towards you with sin before good, and the examples of those before them have already been given. Your Lord is with great forgiveness to mankind for their transgression, and your Lord is severe in retribution.
(Instead of helping you establish and consolidate the Divine System on earth), they challenge you (O Prophet) to hasten the disaster that strikes nations when they ignore the Divine Values. Sufficient precedents have been set for them in the form of exemplary punishments to generations before them. Now, behold, your Lord is Full of forgiveness for people despite their wrongdoing. But, behold, your Lord is also Strict in retribution! (He has decreed the Law of Respite during which period people can safely mend their ways).

They defiantly ask you -O Muhammad- to hasten the promised punishment instead of searching out the truth and be hopeful of Allah's mercy, albeit they heard of the typical instances of the past, forming particular cases of a principle and signal instances of punishment. Nonetheless, Allah, your Creator, is indeed Forgiving. He extends His mercy and forgiveness to people despite their wrongful actions, but also, Allah, punishes severely.
They are such idiots that ask you to advance their punishment (as a proof of your prophet hood) rather than asking you about righteousness. There has been more than enough instances of the Lord’s punishment in the past to serve them as an example. The fact of the matter is that your Lord bears with the sinners (for a while) and (then) He is the most sever in imposing His punishment.

And if you should wonder (at their lack of faith), wondrous are their words, "When we have become dust (or are actually dust), shall we then be created anew?" These are they who disbelieve in their Lord, and these are they with fetters (yokes of servitude to superstition) round their necks, and these are the fellows of the Fire; they shall dwell therein.
