Then We sent, following in their footsteps, Our messengers; and We sent, following, Jesus, son of Mary. And We gave him the Gospel, and We placed in the hearts of those who followed him compassion and mercy. But monasticism, they invented it; We did not prescribe it for them — only the seeking of the approval of God; but they did not observe it with the observance due it. And We gave those who heeded warning among them their reward; but many of them are perfidious.

Then We sent Our Messengers following in their footsteps and sent ‘Isa son of Maryam after them, giving him the Gospel. We put compassion and mercy in the hearts of those who followed him. They invented monasticism – We did not prescribe it for them – purely out of desire to gain the pleasure of Allah, but even so they did not observe it as it should have been observed. To those of them who had iman We gave their reward but many of them are deviators.

Then in sequence We sent after them others of Our Messengers from the same lineal descent and in order of succession We sent Isa (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary), and We gave him the Injil (the Bible) and We impressed the hearts of those who followed him and believed in him with kindness and mercy and monasticism, a system of their contrivance they had introduced, We never imposed on them. They were expected to please Allah with the profound reverence dutiful to Him and with deeds reflecting wisdom and piety and striving in His cause to attain His purpose. Yet when We made Monasticism come to pass, they never regarded the principle with close attention nor did they foster it as they should. And so We gave those of them, whose hearts Reflected the image of religious and spiritual virtues and their deeds wisdom and piety the reward they merited; many among them were indeed wicked.
After them we sent many Prophets . Eventually I sent Jesus, son of Mary and gave him the Gospel and placed in the heart of his follower’s kindness and mercy. The Monasticism , however, was their own invention (not prescribed by God) to please God. They did not observe the rules of their invented sect in the right spirit as it should have been observed. I (God) rewarded those of them who had believed but most of them are wicked.
Then, We sent after them Our Messengers, and We sent ‘Îsâ (Jesus) - son of Maryam (Mary), and gave him the Injeel (Gospel).
