# “Signs for a people who…”

A verse describing the world often closes by naming its audience. The formula is la-āyātin li-qawmin, “surely signs for a people who…”, and the word that finishes it is never the same twice in a row.

Across the 17 verses, five faculties are named, and each verse ends on one of them: those who believe (six times), who reflect (four), who use reason (four), who hear (twice), and who are conscious of God (once, at 10:6).

What the signs are is as varied as who they are for. The alternation of night and day and the ship that runs on the sea (2:164). Water sent down and the growth it brings (6:99). Night made for rest and day made sight-giving (10:67). Spouses, and the love and mercy placed between them (30:21). Sleep by night and day, and the seeking of provision (30:23). Everything in the heavens and the earth, all of it together (45:13).

The list is the 17 verses in which لَآيَاتٍ and لِقَوْمٍ both occur.

### Al-Baqarah 2:164

**Arabic:** اِنَّ ف۪ي خَلْقِ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ الَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ وَالْفُلْكِ الَّت۪ي تَجْر۪ي فِي الْبَحْرِ بِمَا يَنْفَعُ النَّاسَ وَمَٓا اَنْزَلَ اللّٰهُ مِنَ السَّمَٓاءِ مِنْ مَٓاءٍ فَاَحْيَا بِهِ الْاَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا وَبَثَّ ف۪يهَا مِنْ كُلِّ دَٓابَّةٍۖ وَتَصْر۪يفِ الرِّيَاحِ وَالسَّحَابِ الْمُسَخَّرِ بَيْنَ السَّمَٓاءِ وَالْاَرْضِ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ

**Transcription:** Inna fee khalqi assamawatiwal-ardi wakhtilafi allayli wannahariwalfulki allatee tajree fee albahri bimayanfaAAu annasa wama anzala Allahumina assama-i min ma-in faahyabihi al-arda baAAda mawtiha wabaththa feehamin kulli dabbatin watasreefi arriyahiwassahabi almusakhkhari bayna assama-iwal-ardi laayatin liqawminyaAAqiloon

In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day, and the ship which runs in the sea with what benefits men, and what God sent down of water from the sky then gave life thereby to the earth after its death, and spread therein every creature, and in the circulation of the winds and the clouds made subject between the heaven and the earth are proofs for people who reason.

**Arabic:** وَهُوَ الَّـذ۪ٓي اَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَٓاءِ مَٓاءًۚ فَاَخْرَجْنَا بِه۪ نَبَاتَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ فَاَخْرَجْنَا مِنْهُ خَضِراً نُخْرِجُ مِنْهُ حَباًّ مُتَرَاكِباًۚ وَمِنَ النَّخْلِ مِنْ طَلْعِهَا قِنْوَانٌ دَانِيَةٌ وَجَنَّاتٍ مِنْ اَعْنَابٍ وَالزَّيْتُونَ وَالرُّمَّانَ مُشْتَبِهاً وَغَيْرَ مُتَشَابِهٍۜ اُنْظُـرُٓوا اِلٰى ثَمَرِه۪ٓ اِذَٓا اَثْمَرَ وَيَنْعِه۪ۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكُمْ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ

**Transcription:** Wahuwa allathee anzala mina assama-imaan faakhrajna bihi nabata kulli shay-infaakhrajna minhu khadiran nukhriju minhu habbanmutarakiban wamina annakhli min talAAihaqinwanun daniyatun wajannatin min aAAnabinwazzaytoona warrummana mushtabihanwaghayra mutashabihin onthuroo ilathamarihi itha athmara wayanAAihi inna fee thalikumlaayatin liqawmin yu/minoon

And He it is that sends down from the sky water; and We bring forth thereby the growth of all things; and We bring forth from it greenery, bringing forth from it grain heaped up; and from the date-palm, from its spathes, bunches of dates within reach; and gardens of grapevines and olives and pomegranates, similar yet different. Look upon the fruit thereof when it bears fruit and it ripens: in that are proofs for people who believe.

### Yunus 10:6

**Arabic:** اِنَّ فِي اخْتِلَافِ الَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ وَمَا خَلَقَ اللّٰهُ فِي السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضِ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَتَّقُونَ

**Transcription:** Inna fee ikhtilafi allayli wannahariwama khalaqa Allahu fee assamawatiwal-ardi laayatin liqawmin yattaqoon

In the alternation of night and day, and what God has created in the heavens and the earth, are proofs for people who are in prudent fear.

### Yunus 10:67

**Arabic:** هُوَ الَّذ۪ي جَعَلَ لَـكُمُ الَّيْلَ لِتَسْكُنُوا ف۪يهِ وَالنَّهَارَ مُبْصِراًۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَسْمَعُونَ

**Transcription:** Huwa allathee jaAAala lakumu allaylalitaskunoo feehi wannahara mubsiran innafee thalika laayatin liqawmin yasmaAAoon

He it is that made for you the night wherein to rest, and the day, sight-giving; in that are proofs for people who hear.

### Ar-Ra'd 13:3

**Arabic:** وَهُوَ الَّذ۪ي مَدَّ الْاَرْضَ وَجَعَلَ ف۪يهَا رَوَاسِيَ وَاَنْهَاراًۜ وَمِنْ كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ جَعَلَ ف۪يهَا زَوْجَيْنِ اثْنَيْنِ يُغْشِي الَّيْلَ النَّهَارَۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

**Transcription:** Wahuwa allathee madda al-ardawajaAAala feeha rawasiya waanharan waminkulli aththamarati jaAAala feeha zawjayniithnayni yughshee allayla annahara inna fee thalikalaayatin liqawmin yatafakkaroon

And He it is that spread out the earth, and placed therein firm mountains and rivers; and of every fruit He made therein two kinds; He covers the night with the day; in that are proofs for people who reflect.

### Ar-Ra'd 13:4

**Arabic:** وَفِي الْاَرْضِ قِطَعٌ مُتَجَاوِرَاتٌ وَجَنَّاتٌ مِنْ اَعْنَابٍ وَزَرْعٌ وَنَخ۪يلٌ صِنْوَانٌ وَغَيْرُ صِنْوَانٍ يُسْقٰى بِمَٓاءٍ وَاحِدٍ۠ وَنُفَضِّلُ بَعْضَهَا عَلٰى بَعْضٍ فِي الْاُكُلِۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ

**Transcription:** Wafee al-ardi qitaAAun mutajawiratunwajannatun min aAAnabin wazarAAun wanakheelun sinwanunwaghayru sinwanin yusqa bima-in wahidinwanufaddilu baAAdaha AAala baAAdinfee alokuli inna fee thalika laayatinliqawmin yaAAqiloon

And in the earth are tracts adjacent to one another; and gardens of grapevines, and crops, and date-palms with roots shared and independent — watered with one water; and some of them We make exceed in food others; in that are proofs for people who reason.

### An-Nahl 16:12

**Arabic:** وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ الَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَۙ وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَۜ وَالنُّجُومُ مُسَخَّرَاتٌ بِاَمْرِه۪ۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَۙ

**Transcription:** Wasakhkhara lakumu allayla wannaharawashshamsa walqamara wannujoomumusakhkharatun bi-amrihi inna fee thalika laayatinliqawmin yaAAqiloon

And He made subject for you the night, and the day, and the sun, and the moon; and the stars are made subject by His command — in that are proofs for people who reason —

### An-Nahl 16:79

**Arabic:** اَلَمْ يَرَوْا اِلَى الطَّيْرِ مُسَخَّرَاتٍ ف۪ي جَوِّ السَّمَٓاءِۜ مَا يُمْسِكُهُنَّ اِلَّا اللّٰهُۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ

**Transcription:** Alam yaraw ila attayrimusakhkharatin fee jawwi assama-i mayumsikuhunna illa Allahu inna fee thalika laayatinliqawmin yu/minoon

Have they not considered the birds made subject in the air of the sky? There holds them only God; in that are proofs for people who believe.

### An-Naml 27:86

**Arabic:** اَلَمْ يَرَوْا اَنَّا جَعَلْنَا الَّيْلَ لِيَسْكُنُوا ف۪يهِ وَالنَّهَارَ مُبْصِراًۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ

**Transcription:** Alam yaraw anna jaAAalnaallayla liyaskunoo feehi wannahara mubsiraninna fee thalika laayatin liqawmin yu/minoon

Have they not considered that We made the night that they might rest therein, and the day sight-giving? In that are proofs for people who believe.

### Al-'Ankabut 29:24

**Arabic:** فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِه۪ٓ اِلَّٓا اَنْ قَالُوا اقْتُلُوهُ اَوْ حَرِّقُوهُ فَاَنْجٰيهُ اللّٰهُ مِنَ النَّارِۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ

**Transcription:** Fama kana jawabaqawmihi illa an qaloo oqtuloohu aw harriqoohufaanjahu Allahu mina annari inna feethalika laayatin liqawmin yu/minoon

Then the response of his people was only that they said: “Kill him, or burn him!” But God delivered him from the fire; in that are proofs for people who believe.

### Ar-Rum 30:21

**Arabic:** وَمِنْ اٰيَاتِه۪ٓ اَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مِنْ اَنْفُسِكُمْ اَزْوَاجاً لِتَسْكُـنُٓوا اِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ مَوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةًۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

**Transcription:** Wamin ayatihi an khalaqa lakummin anfusikum azwajan litaskunoo ilayha wajaAAalabaynakum mawaddatan warahmatan inna fee thalika laayatinliqawmin yatafakkaroon

And among His proofs is that He created for you spouses from yourselves that you might be reassured thereby, and made between you love and mercy; in that are proofs for people who reflect.

### Ar-Rum 30:23

**Arabic:** وَمِنْ اٰيَاتِه۪ مَنَامُكُمْ بِالَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ وَابْتِغَٓاؤُ۬كُمْ مِنْ فَضْلِه۪ۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَسْمَعُونَ

**Transcription:** Wamin ayatihi manamukumbillayli wannahari wabtighaokummin fadlihi inna fee thalika laayatinliqawmin yasmaAAoon

And among His proofs is your sleep by night and day, and your seeking of His bounty; in that are proofs for people who hear.

### Ar-Rum 30:24

**Arabic:** وَمِنْ اٰيَاتِه۪ يُر۪يكُمُ الْبَرْقَ خَوْفاً وَطَمَعاً وَيُنَزِّلُ مِنَ السَّمَٓاءِ مَٓاءً فَيُحْـي۪ بِهِ الْاَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَاۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ

**Transcription:** Wamin ayatihi yureekumualbarqa khawfan watamaAAan wayunazzilu mina assama-imaan fayuhyee bihi al-arda baAAda mawtihainna fee thalika laayatin liqawminyaAAqiloon

And among His proofs He shows you the lightning as fear and hope, and sends down water from the sky and gives thereby life to the earth after its death; in that are proofs for people who reason.

### Ar-Rum 30:37

**Arabic:** اَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا اَنَّ اللّٰهَ يَبْسُطُ الرِّزْقَ لِمَنْ يَشَٓاءُ وَيَقْدِرُۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ

**Transcription:** Awa lam yaraw anna Allaha yabsutuarrizqa liman yashao wayaqdiru inna fee thalikalaayatin liqawmin yu/minoon

Have they not considered that God expands provision for whom He wills, and He straitens? In that are proofs for people who believe.

### Az-Zumar 39:42

**Arabic:** اَللّٰهُ يَتَوَفَّى الْاَنْفُسَ ح۪ينَ مَوْتِهَا وَالَّت۪ي لَمْ تَمُتْ ف۪ي مَنَامِهَاۚ فَيُمْسِكُ الَّت۪ي قَضٰى عَلَيْهَا الْمَوْتَ وَيُرْسِلُ الْاُخْرٰٓى اِلٰٓى اَجَلٍ مُسَمًّىۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

**Transcription:** Allahu yatawaffa al-anfusa heenamawtiha wallatee lam tamut fee manamihafayumsiku allatee qada AAalayha almawta wayursilual-okhra ila ajalin musamman inna fee thalikalaayatin liqawmin yatafakkaroon

God takes the souls at the time of their death, and that which has not died, in its sleep. Then He keeps that for which He has ordained death, and sends down the other to a stated term. In that are proofs for people who reflect.

### Az-Zumar 39:52

**Arabic:** اَوَلَمْ يَعْلَمُٓوا اَنَّ اللّٰهَ يَبْسُطُ الرِّزْقَ لِمَنْ يَشَٓاءُ وَيَقْدِرُۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ۟

### Al-Jathiyah 45:13

**Arabic:** وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمْ مَا فِي السَّمٰوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْاَرْضِ جَم۪يعاً مِنْهُۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

**Transcription:** Wasakhkhara lakum ma fee assamawatiwama fee al-ardi jameeAAan minhu inna fee thalikalaayatin liqawmin yatafakkaroon

And He made subject for you what is in the heavens and what is in the earth — altogether from Him. In that are proofs for people who reflect.
