# Forgiving, Merciful

Many verses end on a pair of God's names, and which pair arrives depends on what the verse was doing. Ghafūrun raḥīmun, forgiving and merciful, is the commonest of them: 41 verses close on it. Three other pairs follow at a distance, ʿalīmun ḥakīmun at 15, samīʿun ʿalīmun at 14, and ʿazīzun ḥakīmun at 13.

The placement is exact. All 41 verses carry the two words side by side, and in every one of them the pair is the last thing in the verse. Nothing follows it.

What comes before it is worth reading as a set. The pair tends to arrive after a hard ruling, a permission granted under pressure, or a door left open after a warning. Read in order, the 41 verses show what the Qur'an thinks needs that ending.

Every verse containing both غَفُور (ghafūr) and رَحِيم (raḥīm) in these forms, in muṣḥaf order.

### Al-Baqarah 2:173

**Arabic:** اِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَيْتَةَ وَالدَّمَ وَلَحْمَ الْخِنْز۪يرِ وَمَٓا اُهِلَّ بِه۪ لِغَيْرِ اللّٰهِۚ فَمَنِ اضْطُرَّ غَيْرَ بَاغٍ وَلَا عَادٍ فَلَٓا اِثْمَ عَلَيْهِۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Innama harrama AAalaykumualmaytata waddama walahma alkhinzeeri wamaohilla bihi lighayri Allahi famani idturra ghayra baghinwala AAadin fala ithma AAalayhi inna Allahaghafoorun raheem

He has only made unlawful to you carrion, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that dedicated to other than God. But whoso is forced, neither desiring nor transgressing, no sin is upon him; God is forgiving and merciful.

**Arabic:** فَمَنْ خَافَ مِنْ مُوصٍ جَنَفاً اَوْ اِثْماً فَاَصْلَحَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَلَٓا اِثْمَ عَلَيْهِۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ۟

**Transcription:** Faman khafa min moosinjanafan aw ithman faaslaha baynahum falaithma AAalayhi inna Allaha ghafoorun raheem

But whoso fears from a testator partiality or sin and makes right between them, no sin is upon him; God is forgiving and merciful.

**Arabic:** فَاِنِ انْتَهَوْا فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Fa-ini intahaw fa-inna Allahaghafoorun raheem

But if they desist, then God is forgiving and merciful.

**Arabic:** ثُمَّ اَف۪يضُوا مِنْ حَيْثُ اَفَاضَ النَّاسُ وَاسْتَغْفِرُوا اللّٰهَۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Thumma afeedoo min haythu afadaannasu wastaghfiroo Allaha inna Allahaghafoorun raheem

Then pour forth from where men have poured forth. And ask forgiveness of God; God is forgiving and merciful.

**Arabic:** اِنَّ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا وَالَّذ۪ينَ هَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِۙ اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ يَرْجُونَ رَحْمَتَ اللّٰهِۜ وَاللّٰهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Inna allatheena amanoo wallatheenahajaroo wajahadoo fee sabeeli Allahi ola-ikayarjoona rahmata Allahi wallahughafoorun raheem

Those who heed warning, and those who emigrate and strive in the cause of God: those hope for the mercy of God; and God is forgiving and merciful.

**Arabic:** لِلَّذ۪ينَ يُؤْلُونَ مِنْ نِسَٓائِهِمْ تَرَبُّصُ اَرْبَعَةِ اَشْهُرٍۚ فَاِنْ فَٓاؤُ۫ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Lillatheena yu/loona min nisa-ihimtarabbusu arbaAAati ashhurin fa-in faoo fa-inna Allahaghafoorun raheem

For those who forswear their women is a wait of four months; but if they return, then God is forgiving and merciful.

**Arabic:** قُلْ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللّٰهَ فَاتَّبِعُون۪ي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللّٰهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْۜ  وَاللّٰهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Qul in kuntum tuhibboona AllahafattabiAAoonee yuhbibkumu Allahu wayaghfirlakum thunoobakum wallahu ghafoorun raheem

Say thou: “If you love God, follow me; God will love you, and forgive you your transgressions”; and God is forgiving and merciful.

### Ali 'Imran 3:89

**Arabic:** اِلَّا الَّذ۪ينَ تَابُوا مِنْ بَعْدِ ذٰلِكَ وَاَصْلَحُوا فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Illa allatheena taboomin baAAdi thalika waaslahoo fa-inna Allahaghafoorun raheem

Save those who repent after that, and make right; and God is forgiving and merciful.

### Ali 'Imran 3:129

**Transcription:** Walillahi ma fee assamawatiwama fee al-ardi yaghfiru liman yashaowayuAAaththibu man yashao wallahughafoorun raheem

And to God belongs what is in the heavens and what is in the earth. He forgives whom He wills, and punishes whom He wills; and God is forgiving and merciful.

### An-Nisa 4:25

**Arabic:** وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِـعْ مِنْكُمْ طَوْلاً اَنْ يَنْكِـحَ الْمُحْصَنَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنَاتِ فَمِنْ مَا مَلَكَتْ اَيْمَانُكُمْ مِنْ فَتَيَاتِكُمُ الْمُؤْمِنَاتِۜ وَاللّٰهُ اَعْلَمُ بِا۪يمَانِكُمْۜ بَعْضُكُمْ مِنْ بَعْضٍۚ فَانْكِحُوهُنَّ بِاِذْنِ اَهْلِهِنَّ وَاٰتُوهُنَّ اُجُورَهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ مُحْصَنَاتٍ غَيْرَ مُسَافِحَاتٍ وَلَا مُتَّخِذَاتِ اَخْدَانٍۚ فَاِذَٓا اُحْصِنَّ فَاِنْ اَتَيْنَ بِفَاحِشَةٍ فَعَلَيْهِنَّ نِصْفُ مَا عَلَى الْمُحْصَنَاتِ مِنَ الْعَذَابِۜ ذٰلِكَ لِمَنْ خَشِيَ الْعَنَتَ مِنْكُمْۜ وَاَنْ تَصْبِرُوا خَيْرٌ لَكُمْۜ  وَاللّٰهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ۟

**Transcription:** Waman lam yastatiAA minkum tawlanan yankiha almuhsanati almu/minatifamin ma malakat aymanukum min fatayatikumualmu/minati wallahu aAAlamu bi-eemanikumbaAAdukum min baAAdin fankihoohunnabi-ithni ahlihinna waatoohunna ojoorahunna bilmaAAroofimuhsanatin ghayra masafihatin walamuttakhithati akhdanin fa-itha ohsinnafa-in atayna bifahishatin faAAalayhinna nisfu maAAala almuhsanati mina alAAathabi thalikaliman khashiya alAAanata minkum waan tasbiroo khayrunlakum wallahu ghafoorun raheem

And whoso among you has not the means to marry free believing women, then from what your right hands possess of believing maids; and God best knows your faith. You are of one another, so marry them with the leave of their people; and give them their rewards according to what is fitting, they being chaste and not fornicators, nor taking secret friends. But when they are in wedlock, then if they commit sexual immorality: upon them is half what is due the free women of punishment; that is for him who fears hardship among you. And that you be patient is best for you; and God is forgiving and merciful.

### Al-Ma'idah 5:3

**Arabic:** حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَيْتَةُ وَالدَّمُ وَلَحْمُ الْخِنْز۪يرِ وَمَٓا اُهِلَّ لِغَيْرِ اللّٰهِ بِه۪ وَالْمُنْخَنِقَةُ وَالْمَوْقُوذَةُ وَالْمُتَرَدِّيَةُ وَالنَّط۪يحَةُ وَمَٓا اَكَلَ السَّبُعُ اِلَّا مَا ذَكَّيْتُمْ وَمَا ذُبِحَ عَلَى النُّصُبِ وَاَنْ تَسْتَقْسِمُوا بِالْاَزْلَامِۜ ذٰلِكُمْ فِسْقٌۜ  اَلْيَوْمَ يَـئِسَ الَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ د۪ينِكُمْ فَلَا تَخْشَوْهُمْ وَاخْشَوْنِۜ اَلْيَوْمَ اَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ د۪ينَكُمْ وَاَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَت۪ي وَرَض۪يتُ لَكُمُ الْاِسْلَامَ د۪يناًۜ فَمَنِ اضْطُرَّ ف۪ي مَخْمَصَةٍ غَيْرَ مُتَجَانِفٍ لِاِثْمٍۙ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Hurrimat AAalaykumu almaytatu waddamuwalahmu alkhinzeeri wama ohilla lighayri Allahibihi walmunkhaniqatu walmawqoothatu walmutaraddiyatuwannateehatu wama akala assabuAAuilla ma thakkaytum wama thubihaAAala annusubi waan tastaqsimoo bil-azlamithalikum fisqun alyawma ya-isa allatheena kafaroomin deenikum fala takhshawhum wakhshawni alyawmaakmaltu lakum deenakum waatmamtu AAalaykum niAAmatee waradeetulakumu al-islama deenan famani idturra fee makhmasatinghayra mutajanifin li-ithmin fa-inna Allahaghafoorun raheem

Forbidden to you is carrion, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that dedicated to other than God, and the strangled, and the beaten, and the fallen, and the gored, and that eaten by the beast of prey save what you slaughter, and that sacrificed upon the altar, and that you seek apportionment by divining arrows — that is perfidy — (this day have those who ignore warning despaired of your doctrine, so fear them not, but fear Me; this day have I perfected for you your doctrine and completed My favour upon you, and approved for you submission as doctrine) but whoso is compelled by hunger, without inclination to sin — God is forgiving and merciful.

### Al-Ma'idah 5:34

**Arabic:** اِلَّا الَّذ۪ينَ تَابُوا مِنْ قَبْلِ اَنْ تَقْدِرُوا عَلَيْهِمْۚ فَاعْلَمُٓوا اَنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ۟

**Transcription:** Illa allatheena taboomin qabli an taqdiroo AAalayhim faAAlamoo anna Allahaghafoorun raheem

Save those who repent before you have power over them; and know that God is forgiving and merciful.

### Al-Ma'idah 5:39

**Arabic:** فَمَنْ تَابَ مِنْ بَعْدِ ظُلْمِه۪ وَاَصْلَحَ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَتُوبُ عَلَيْهِۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Faman taba min baAAdi thulmihiwaaslaha fa-inna Allaha yatoobu AAalayhiinna Allaha ghafoorun raheem

Then whoso repents after his injustice and makes right, God will relent towards him; God is forgiving and merciful.

### Al-Ma'idah 5:74

**Arabic:** اَفَلَا يَتُوبُونَ اِلَى اللّٰهِ وَيَسْتَغْفِرُونَهُۜ وَاللّٰهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Afala yatooboona ila Allahiwayastaghfiroonahu wallahu ghafoorun raheem

Will they then not turn to God and seek His forgiveness? And God is forgiving and merciful.

### Al-Ma'idah 5:98

**Arabic:** اِعْلَمُٓوا اَنَّ اللّٰهَ شَد۪يدُ الْعِقَابِ وَاَنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌۜ

**Transcription:** IAAlamoo anna Allaha shadeedu alAAiqabiwaanna Allaha ghafoorun raheem

Know that God is severe in retribution, and that God is forgiving and merciful.

### Al-An'am 6:54

**Arabic:** وَاِذَا جَٓاءَكَ الَّذ۪ينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاٰيَاتِنَا فَقُلْ سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ كَتَبَ رَبُّكُمْ عَلٰى نَفْسِهِ الرَّحْمَةَۙ اَنَّهُ مَنْ عَمِلَ مِنْكُمْ سُٓوءاً بِجَهَالَةٍ ثُمَّ تَابَ مِنْ بَعْدِه۪ وَاَصْلَحَ فَاَنَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Wa-itha jaaka allatheenayu/minoona bi-ayatina faqul salamunAAalaykum kataba rabbukum AAala nafsihi arrahmataannahu man AAamila minkum soo-an bijahalatin thumma tabamin baAAdihi waaslaha faannahu ghafoorun raheem

And when there come to thee those who believe in Our proofs, say thou: “Peace be upon you! Your Lord has prescribed for Himself mercy, that whoso of you does evil through ignorance, then turns in repentance after that and makes right: He is forgiving and merciful.”

### Al-An'am 6:145

**Arabic:** قُلْ لَٓا اَجِدُ ف۪ي مَٓا اُو۫حِيَ اِلَيَّ مُحَرَّماً عَلٰى طَاعِمٍ يَطْعَمُهُٓ اِلَّٓا اَنْ يَكُونَ مَيْتَةً اَوْ دَماً مَسْفُوحاً اَوْ لَحْمَ خِنْز۪يرٍ فَاِنَّهُ رِجْسٌ اَوْ فِسْقاً اُهِلَّ لِغَيْرِ اللّٰهِ بِه۪ۚ فَمَنِ اضْطُرَّ غَيْرَ بَاغٍ وَلَا عَادٍ فَاِنَّ رَبَّكَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Qul la ajidu feema oohiyailayya muharraman AAala taAAimin yatAAamuhuilla an yakoona maytatan aw daman masfoohan aw lahmakhinzeerin fa-innahu rijsun aw fisqan ohilla lighayri Allahibihi famani idturra ghayra baghin wala AAadinfa-inna rabbaka ghafoorun raheem

Say thou: “I find not in what has been revealed to me what is unlawful to one who would eat it save it be carrion, or blood poured forth, or the flesh of swine — and it is an abomination — or perfidy dedicated to other than God”; but whoso is forced, neither desiring nor transgressing: thy Lord is forgiving and merciful.

### Al-Anfal 8:69

**Arabic:** فَكُلُوا مِمَّا غَنِمْتُمْ حَلَالاً طَيِّباًۘ وَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ۟

**Transcription:** Fakuloo mimma ghanimtum halalantayyiban wattaqoo Allaha inna Allahaghafoorun raheem

So eat of what you took in spoils as lawful and good, and be in prudent fear of God; God is forgiving and merciful.

### Al-Anfal 8:70

**Arabic:** يَٓا اَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِمَنْ ف۪ٓي اَيْد۪يكُمْ مِنَ الْاَسْرٰٓىۙ اِنْ يَعْلَمِ اللّٰهُ ف۪ي قُلُوبِكُمْ خَيْراً يُؤْتِكُمْ خَيْراً مِمَّٓا اُخِذَ مِنْكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْۜ وَاللّٰهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Ya ayyuha annabiyyuqul liman fee aydeekum mina al-asra in yaAAlami Allahufee quloobikum khayran yu/tikum khayran mimma okhithaminkum wayaghfir lakum wallahu ghafoorun raheem

O Prophet: say thou to those in your hands of the captives: “If God knows any good in your hearts, He will give you better than what has been taken from you, and will forgive you”; and God is forgiving and merciful.

### At-Tawbah 9:5

**Arabic:** فَاِذَا انْسَلَخَ الْاَشْهُرُ الْحُرُمُ فَاقْتُلُوا الْمُشْرِك۪ينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدْتُمُوهُمْ وَخُذُوهُمْ وَاحْصُرُوهُمْ وَاقْعُدُوا لَهُمْ كُلَّ مَرْصَدٍۚ فَاِنْ تَابُوا وَاَقَامُوا الصَّلٰوةَ وَاٰتَوُا الزَّكٰوةَ فَخَلُّوا سَب۪يلَهُمْۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Fa-itha insalakha al-ashhuru alhurumufaqtuloo almushrikeena haythu wajadtumoohum wakhuthoohumwahsuroohum waqAAudoo lahum kulla marsadinfa-in taboo waaqamoo assalatawaatawoo azzakata fakhalloo sabeelahum innaAllaha ghafoorun raheem

And when the inviolable months have passed, then kill the idolaters wheresoever you find them, and seize them, and restrain them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent, and uphold the duty, and render the purity, then let them go their way; God is forgiving and merciful.

### At-Tawbah 9:27

**Arabic:** ثُمَّ يَتُوبُ اللّٰهُ مِنْ بَعْدِ ذٰلِكَ عَلٰى مَنْ يَشَٓاءُۜ وَاللّٰهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Thumma yatoobu Allahu min baAAdi thalikaAAala man yashao wallahu ghafoorunraheem

Then does God relent after that towards whom He wills; and God is forgiving and merciful.

### At-Tawbah 9:91

**Arabic:** لَيْسَ عَلَى الضُّعَفَٓاءِ وَلَا عَلَى الْمَرْضٰى وَلَا عَلَى الَّذ۪ينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ مَا يُنْفِقُونَ حَرَجٌ اِذَا نَصَحُوا لِلّٰهِ وَرَسُولِه۪ۜ مَا عَلَى الْمُحْسِن۪ينَ مِنْ سَب۪يلٍۜ وَاللّٰهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌۙ

**Transcription:** Laysa AAala adduAAafa-iwala AAala almarda wala AAalaallatheena la yajidoona ma yunfiqoona harajunitha nasahoo lillahi warasoolihi maAAala almuhsineena min sabeelin wallahughafoorun raheem

Not upon the weak, nor upon the sick, nor upon those who find not what to spend is there blame, when they are true to God and His messenger — against the doers of good there is no path; and God is forgiving and merciful —

### At-Tawbah 9:99

**Arabic:** وَمِنَ الْاَعْرَابِ مَنْ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللّٰهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْاٰخِرِ وَيَتَّخِذُ مَا يُنْفِقُ قُرُبَاتٍ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ وَصَلَوَاتِ الرَّسُولِۜ اَلَٓا اِنَّهَا قُرْبَةٌ لَهُمْۜ سَيُدْخِلُهُمُ اللّٰهُ ف۪ي رَحْمَتِه۪ۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ۟

**Transcription:** Wamina al-aAArabi man yu/minu billahiwalyawmi al-akhiri wayattakhithu mayunfiqu qurubatin AAinda Allahi wasalawatiarrasooli ala innaha qurbatun lahumsayudkhiluhumu Allahu fee rahmatihi inna Allahaghafoorun raheem

And among the desert Arabs is he who believes in God and the Last Day, and takes what he spends as a means of nearness to God and the duties of the Messenger. In truth, it is a means of nearness for them: God will make them enter into His mercy; God is forgiving and merciful.

### At-Tawbah 9:102

**Arabic:** وَاٰخَرُونَ اعْتَرَفُوا بِذُنُوبِهِمْ خَلَطُوا عَمَلاً صَالِحاً وَاٰخَرَ سَيِّئاًۜ عَسَى اللّٰهُ اَنْ يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Waakharoona iAAtarafoo bithunoobihimkhalatoo AAamalan salihan waakharasayyi-an AAasa Allahu an yatooba AAalayhim inna Allahaghafoorun raheem

And others acknowledged their transgressions: they mixed a righteous deed with another of evil. It may be that God will relent towards them; God is forgiving and merciful.

### Yusuf 12:53

**Arabic:** وَمَٓا اُبَرِّئُ نَفْس۪يۚ اِنَّ النَّفْسَ لَاَمَّارَةٌ بِالسُّٓوءِ اِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبّ۪يۜ اِنَّ رَبّ۪ي غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Wama obarri-o nafsee inna annafsalaammaratun bissoo-i illa ma rahimarabbee inna rabbee ghafoorun raheem

“And I absolve not myself; the soul commands to evil, save that my Lord has mercy; my Lord is forgiving and merciful.”

**Arabic:** رَبِّ اِنَّهُنَّ اَضْلَلْنَ كَث۪يراً مِنَ النَّاسِۚ فَمَنْ تَبِعَن۪ي فَاِنَّهُ مِنّ۪يۚ وَمَنْ عَصَان۪ي فَاِنَّكَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Rabbi innahunna adlalna katheeranmina annasi faman tabiAAanee fa-innahu minneewaman AAasanee fa-innaka ghafoorun raheem

“My Lord: they have led astray many among mankind. But whoso follows me, he is of me; and whoso disobeys me: Thou art forgiving and merciful.

### An-Nahl 16:115

**Arabic:** اِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَيْتَةَ وَالدَّمَ وَلَحْمَ الْخِنْز۪يرِ وَمَٓا اُهِلَّ لِغَيْرِ اللّٰهِ بِه۪ۚ فَمَنِ اضْطُرَّ غَيْرَ بَاغٍ وَلَا عَادٍ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Innama harrama AAalaykumualmaytata waddama walahma alkhinzeeri wamaohilla lighayri Allahi bihi famani idturra ghayra baghinwala AAadin fa-inna Allaha ghafoorun raheem

He has but made unlawful to you carrion, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that dedicated to other than God; but whoso is forced, neither desiring nor transgressing: God is forgiving and merciful.

### An-Nur 24:5

**Arabic:** اِلَّا الَّذ۪ينَ تَابُوا مِنْ بَعْدِ ذٰلِكَ وَاَصْلَحُواۚ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Illa allatheena taboomin baAAdi thalika waaslahoo fa-inna Allahaghafoorun raheem

Save those who repent after that and make right; then is God forgiving and merciful.

### An-Nur 24:22

**Arabic:** وَلَا يَأْتَلِ اُو۬لُوا الْفَضْلِ مِنْكُمْ وَالسَّعَةِ اَنْ يُؤْتُٓوا اُو۬لِي الْقُرْبٰى وَالْمَسَاك۪ينَ وَالْمُهَاجِر۪ينَ ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِۖ وَلْيَعْفُوا وَلْيَصْفَحُواۜ اَلَا تُحِبُّونَ اَنْ يَغْفِرَ اللّٰهُ لَكُمْۜ وَاللّٰهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Wala ya/tali oloo alfadliminkum wassaAAati an yu/too olee alqurba walmasakeenawalmuhajireena fee sabeeli AllahiwalyaAAfoo walyasfahoo ala tuhibboonaan yaghfira Allahu lakum wallahu ghafoorunraheem

And let not swear those of bounty and abundance among you against giving to relatives, and the poor, and the émigrés in the cause of God; and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love that God should forgive you? And God is forgiving and merciful.

### An-Nur 24:33

**Arabic:** وَلْيَسْتَعْفِفِ الَّذ۪ينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ نِكَاحاً حَتّٰى يُغْنِيَهُمُ اللّٰهُ مِنْ فَضْلِه۪ۜ وَالَّذ۪ينَ يَبْتَغُونَ الْكِتَابَ مِمَّا مَلَكَتْ اَيْمَانُكُمْ فَكَاتِبُوهُمْ اِنْ عَلِمْتُمْ ف۪يهِمْ خَيْراًۗ وَاٰتُوهُمْ مِنْ مَالِ اللّٰهِ الَّـذ۪ٓي اٰتٰيكُمْۜ وَلَا تُكْرِهُوا فَتَيَاتِكُمْ عَلَى الْبِغَٓاءِ اِنْ اَرَدْنَ تَحَصُّناً لِتَبْتَغُوا عَرَضَ الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَاۜ وَمَنْ يُكْرِهْهُنَّ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ مِنْ بَعْدِ اِكْرَاهِهِنَّ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** WalyastaAAfifi allatheena layajidoona nikahan hatta yughniyahumu Allahumin fadlihi wallatheena yabtaghoona alkitabamimma malakat aymanukum fakatiboohum inAAalimtum feehim khayran waatoohum min mali Allahiallathee atakum wala tukrihoo fatayatikumAAala albigha-i in aradna tahassunanlitabtaghoo AAarada alhayati addunyawaman yukrihhunna fa-inna Allaha min baAAdi ikrahihinnaghafoorun raheem

And let abstain those who find not marriage until God enriches them out of His bounty. And those who seek the writ from among those your right hands possess: contract with them if you know good to be in them; and give to them out of the wealth God has given you. And compel not your slave-girls to whoredom, if they desire chastity[...] — seeking the enjoyment of the life of this world. And whoso compels them, then God, after their compulsion, is forgiving and merciful.

### An-Nur 24:62

**Arabic:** اِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا بِاللّٰهِ وَرَسُولِه۪ وَاِذَا كَانُوا مَعَهُ عَلٰٓى اَمْرٍ جَامِعٍ لَمْ يَذْهَبُوا حَتّٰى يَسْتَأْذِنُوهُۜ اِنَّ الَّذ۪ينَ يَسْتَأْذِنُونَكَ اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ الَّذ۪ينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللّٰهِ وَرَسُولِه۪ۚ فَاِذَا اسْتَأْذَنُوكَ لِبَعْضِ شَأْنِهِمْ فَأْذَنْ لِمَنْ شِئْتَ مِنْهُمْ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمُ اللّٰهَۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Innama almu/minoona allatheenaamanoo billahi warasoolihi wa-itha kanoomaAAahu AAala amrin jamiAAin lam yathhaboo hattayasta/thinoohu inna allatheena yasta/thinoonakaola-ika allatheena yu/minoona billahiwarasoolihi fa-itha ista/thanooka libaAAdisha/nihim fa/than liman shi/ta minhum wastaghfirlahumu Allaha inna Allaha ghafoorun raheem

The believers are but those who believe in God and His messenger, and when they are with him on a common matter, go not away until they ask leave of him. They who ask leave of thee: those are they who believe in God and His messenger. So when they ask leave of thee for some matter of theirs, give thou leave to whom thou wilt among them, and ask thou forgiveness of God for them; God is forgiving and merciful.

### An-Naml 27:11

**Arabic:** اِلَّا مَنْ ظَلَمَ ثُمَّ بَدَّلَ حُسْناً بَعْدَ سُٓوءٍ فَاِنّ۪ي غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Illa man thalama thummabaddala husnan baAAda soo-in fa-innee ghafoorun raheem

“Save whoso did wrong; then he changed to good after evil, so am I forgiving and merciful.

### Al-Hujurat 49:5

**Arabic:** وَلَوْ اَنَّهُمْ صَبَرُوا حَتّٰى تَخْرُجَ اِلَيْهِمْ لَكَانَ خَيْراً لَهُمْۜ وَاللّٰهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Walaw annahum sabaroo hattatakhruja ilayhim lakana khayran lahum wallahughafoorun raheem

And had they been patient until thou camest forth to them, it would have been better for them; but God is forgiving and merciful.

### Al-Hujurat 49:14

**Arabic:** قَالَتِ الْاَعْرَابُ اٰمَنَّاۜ قُلْ لَمْ تُؤْمِنُوا وَلٰكِنْ قُولُٓوا اَسْلَمْنَا وَلَمَّا يَدْخُلِ الْا۪يمَانُ ف۪ي قُلُوبِكُمْۜ وَاِنْ تُط۪يعُوا اللّٰهَ وَرَسُولَهُ لَا يَلِتْكُمْ مِنْ اَعْمَالِكُمْ شَيْـٔاًۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Qalati al-aAArabu amannaqul lam tu/minoo walakin qooloo aslamna walammayadkhuli al-eemanu fee quloobikum wa-in tuteeAAooAllaha warasoolahu la yalitkum min aAAmalikumshay-an inna Allaha ghafoorun raheem

The desert Arabs say: “We believe.” Say thou: “You have not believed; but say: ‘We have submitted,’ for faith has not entered into your hearts.” But if you obey God and His messenger, He will not defraud you of anything of your deeds; God is forgiving and merciful.

### Al-Hadid 57:28

**Arabic:** يَٓا اَيُّهَا الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ وَاٰمِنُوا بِرَسُولِه۪ يُؤْتِكُمْ كِفْلَيْنِ مِنْ رَحْمَتِه۪ وَيَجْعَلْ لَكُمْ نُوراً تَمْشُونَ بِه۪ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْۜ وَاللّٰهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌۙ

**Transcription:** Ya ayyuha allatheena amanooittaqoo Allaha waaminoo birasoolihi yu/tikumkiflayni min rahmatihi wayajAAal lakum nooran tamshoonabihi wayaghfir lakum wallahu ghafoorun raheem

O you who heed warning: be in prudent fear of God, and believe in His messenger; He will give you a double share of His mercy, and appoint for you a light whereby you will walk, and will forgive you, — and God is forgiving and merciful —

### Al-Mujadila 58:12

**Arabic:** يَٓا اَيُّهَا الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُٓوا اِذَا نَاجَيْتُمُ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ نَجْوٰيكُمْ صَدَقَةًۜ ذٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ لَـكُمْ وَاَطْهَرُۜ فَاِنْ لَمْ تَجِدُوا فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Ya ayyuha allatheena amanooitha najaytumu arrasoola faqaddimoo baynayaday najwakum sadaqatan thalika khayrunlakum waatharu fa-in lam tajidoo fa-inna Allahaghafoorun raheem

O you who heed warning: when you converse confidentially with the Messenger, send ahead charity before your private conversation. That is better for you, and purer. But if you find not the means — God is forgiving and merciful.

### Al-Mumtahanah 60:7

**Arabic:** عَسَى اللّٰهُ اَنْ يَجْعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ الَّذ۪ينَ عَادَيْتُمْ مِنْهُمْ مَوَدَّةًۜ وَاللّٰهُ قَد۪يرٌۜ وَاللّٰهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** AAasa Allahu an yajAAalabaynakum wabayna allatheena AAadaytum minhummawaddatan wallahu qadeerun wallahughafoorun raheem

It may be that God will put love between you and those of them with whom you have been enemies; and God is powerful; and God is forgiving and merciful.

### Al-Mumtahanah 60:12

**Arabic:** يَٓا اَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ اِذَا جَٓاءَكَ الْمُؤْمِنَاتُ يُبَايِعْنَكَ عَلٰٓى اَنْ لَا يُشْرِكْنَ بِاللّٰهِ شَيْـٔاً وَلَا يَسْرِقْنَ وَلَا يَزْن۪ينَ وَلَا يَقْتُلْنَ اَوْلَادَهُنَّ وَلَا يَأْت۪ينَ بِبُهْتَانٍ يَفْتَر۪ينَهُ بَيْنَ اَيْد۪يهِنَّ وَاَرْجُلِهِنَّ وَلَا يَعْص۪ينَكَ ف۪ي مَعْرُوفٍ فَبَايِعْهُنَّ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُنَّ اللّٰهَۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Ya ayyuha annabiyyu ithajaaka almu/minatu yubayiAAnaka AAalaan la yushrikna billahi shay-an walayasriqna wala yazneena wala yaqtulna awladahunnawala ya/teena bibuhtanin yaftareenahu baynaaydeehinna waarjulihinna wala yaAAseenaka feemaAAroofin fabayiAAhunna wastaghfir lahunna Allahainna Allaha ghafoorun raheem

O Prophet: when the believing women come to thee, swearing fealty to thee: — that they will not ascribe a partnership with God to anything; and they will not steal; and they will not commit unlawful sexual intercourse; and they will not kill their children; and they will not produce a calumny they have invented between their hands and their feet; and they will not disobey thee in what is fitting; — then accept thou their fealty, and ask thou God to forgive them; God is forgiving and merciful.

### At-Taghabun 64:14

**Arabic:** يَٓا اَيُّهَا الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُٓوا اِنَّ مِنْ اَزْوَاجِكُمْ وَاَوْلَادِكُمْ عَدُواًّ لَكُمْ فَاحْذَرُوهُمْۚ وَاِنْ تَعْفُوا وَتَصْفَحُوا وَتَغْفِرُوا فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Ya ayyuha allatheena amanooinna min azwajikum waawladikum AAaduwwan lakum fahtharoohumwa-in taAAfoo watasfahoo wataghfiroo fa-inna Allahaghafoorun raheem

O you who heed warning: among your wives and your children is an enemy to you, so beware of them. But if you pardon, and overlook, and forgive, then is God forgiving and merciful.

### At-Tahrim 66:1

**Arabic:** يَٓا اَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ  لِمَ تُحَرِّمُ مَٓا اَحَلَّ اللّٰهُ لَكَۚ تَبْتَغ۪ي مَرْضَاتَ اَزْوَاجِكَۜ وَاللّٰهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Ya ayyuha annabiyyulima tuharrimu ma ahalla Allahu lakatabtaghee mardata azwajika wallahughafoorun raheem

O Prophet: why makest thou unlawful what God has made lawful for thee, seeking the approval of thy wives? And God is forgiving and merciful.

### Al-Muzzammil 73:20

**Arabic:** اِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ اَنَّكَ تَقُومُ اَدْنٰى مِنْ ثُلُثَيِ الَّيْلِ وَنِصْفَهُ وَثُلُثَهُ وَطَٓائِفَةٌ مِنَ الَّذ۪ينَ مَعَكَۜ وَاللّٰهُ يُقَدِّرُ الَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَۜ عَلِمَ اَنْ لَنْ تُحْصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْرَؤُ۫ا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ الْقُرْاٰنِۜ عَلِمَ اَنْ سَيَكُونُ مِنْكُمْ مَرْضٰىۙ وَاٰخَرُونَ يَضْرِبُونَ فِي الْاَرْضِ يَبْتَغُونَ مِنْ فَضْلِ اللّٰهِۙ وَاٰخَرُونَ يُقَاتِلُونَ ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِۘ فَاقْرَؤُ۫ا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُۙ وَاَق۪يمُوا الصَّلٰوةَ وَاٰتُوا الزَّكٰوةَ وَاَقْرِضُوا اللّٰهَ قَرْضاً حَسَناًۜ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا لِاَنْفُسِكُمْ مِنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ هُوَ خَيْراً وَاَعْظَمَ اَجْراًۜ وَاسْتَغْفِرُوا اللّٰهَۜ  اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

**Transcription:** Inna rabbaka yaAAlamu annaka taqoomu adnamin thuluthayi allayli wanisfahu wathuluthahu wata-ifatunmina allatheena maAAaka wallahu yuqaddiruallayla wannahara AAalima an lan tuhsoohufataba AAalaykum faqraoo ma tayassara minaalqur-ani AAalima an sayakoonu minkum marda waakharoonayadriboona fee al-ardi yabtaghoona min fadliAllahi waakharoona yuqatiloona fee sabeeliAllahi faqraoo ma tayassara minhu waaqeemooassalata waatoo azzakatawaaqridoo Allaha qardan hasanan wamatuqaddimoo li-anfusikum min khayrin tajidoohu AAinda Allahihuwa khayran waaAAthama ajran wastaghfirooAllaha inna Allaha ghafoorun raheem

Thy Lord knows that thou standest nearly two-thirds of the night, or a half of it, or a third of it, as does a number of those with thee. And God determines the night and the day. He knew that you would not calculate it, and has turned towards you: — so recite what is made easy of the Qur’an. He knows that there will be some sick among you, and others travelling in the earth in search of the bounty of God, and others fighting in the cause of God: — so recite what is made easy thereof, and uphold the duty, and render the purity, and lend to God a goodly loan. And what good you send ahead for your souls — you will find it with God, better and greater in reward. And ask forgiveness of God; God is forgiving and merciful.
