Surah Yusuf (Joseph) — سورة يوسف - **Verse:** 84 / 111 · **Juz:** 13 · **Mushaf page:** 244 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-yusuf/verse-84 ## Arabic وَتَوَلّٰى عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَٓا اَسَفٰى عَلٰى يُوسُفَ وَابْيَضَّتْ عَيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْحُزْنِ فَهُوَ كَظ۪يمٌ ## Transcription Watawalla AAanhum waqala yaasafa AAala yoosufa wabyaddat AAaynahumina alhuzni fahuwa katheem ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley He turned himself away from them and said, ‘What anguish is my sorrow for Yusuf!’ And then his eyes turned white from hidden grief. ### Progressive Muslims And he turned away from them and said: "Oh, my sorry over Joseph. " And his eyes turned white from sadness, and he became blind. ### Shabbir Ahmed Then Jacob turned away from them saying, "Alas, my grief for Joseph!" His eyes glistened with tears but he suppressed his grief. " (Jacob worried more about Joseph since he had no news of him yet. Many exponents at this point have ventured into strange guesswork. They report that Prophet Jacob became blind with grief and cried incessantly for eighty years grieving for Joseph! The Bible relates that Jacob lived to be 147 years old. Even so, it is not befitting of a Prophet of God, or even an ordinary person, to turn blind with grief and weep incessantly for 80 years. The whiteness of his eyes in this verse clearly refers to his eyes glistening with tears momentarily. Gözleri sürekli yaşlı olan kişinin göz renkleri, gözlerinin içinin akı-karası seçilemez; âdeta su görüntüsü göz hâlini alır. Belli ki Hz. Yakup'un gözlerine inen ak, sürekli ağlayıp gözyaşına boğulmuş hâlini oluşturmuştu. Bu durumla ilgili olarak [a‘mâ] (görme engelli) kelimesinin kullanılmamasının muhtemel sebebi bu olsa gerektir.
