Surah Yusuf (Joseph) — سورة يوسف - **Verse:** 51 / 111 · **Juz:** 12 · **Mushaf page:** 240 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-yusuf/verse-51 ## Arabic قَالَ مَا خَطْبُكُنَّ اِذْ رَاوَدْتُنَّ يُوسُفَ عَنْ نَفْسِه۪ۜ قُلْنَ حَاشَ لِلّٰهِ مَا عَلِمْنَا عَلَيْهِ مِنْ سُٓوءٍۜ قَالَتِ امْرَاَتُ الْعَز۪يزِ الْـٰٔنَ حَصْحَصَ الْحَقُّۘ اَنَا۬ رَاوَدْتُهُ عَنْ نَفْسِه۪ وَاِنَّهُ لَمِنَ الصَّادِق۪ينَ ## Transcription Qala ma khatbukunna ithrawadtunna yoosufa AAan nafsihi qulna hasha lillahima AAalimna AAalayhi min soo-in qalatiimraatu alAAazeezi al-ana hashasa alhaqquana rawadtuhu AAan nafsihi wa-innahu lamina assadiqeen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley He said, ‘What was this past affair of yours when you solicited Yusuf?’ Then they said ‘Allah forbid! We know no bad of him. ’ The governor’s wife then said, ‘The truth has now emerged. Indeed I tried to seduce him then and he has simply told the honest truth. ### Progressive Muslims He said: "What is your plea that you tried to seduce Joseph from himself" They said: "God forbid that we would do any harm to him. " The wife of the Governor said: "Now the truth must be known, I did seek to seduce Joseph from himself and he is of the truthful ones." ### Shabbir Ahmed The King sent for those women, and asked them, "What happened when you tried to seduce Joseph?" They answered, "Good Lord! We found no evil in him. " The wife of the governor (Zelicha) couldn't hold back, "Now the truth is out. "God preserve us, " they said; "we know no evil against him. " The wife of the minister said: "The truth has now come out. It was I who desired to seduce him, but he is indeed a man of virtue." -- ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Said [the king to the women], "What was your condition when you sought to seduce Joseph?" They said, "Perfect is Allah ! We know about him no evil. " The wife of al-'Azeez said, "Now the truth has become evident. It was I who sought to seduce him, and indeed, he is of the truthful. ### Muhammad Asad [Thereupon the King sent for those women; and when they came, ] he asked: "What was it that you hoped to achieve when you sought to make Joseph yield himself unto you?" The women answered: "God save us! We did not perceive the least evil [intention] on his part!" [And] the wife of Joseph's former master exclaimed: "Now has the truth come to light! It was I who sought to make him yield himself unto me - whereas he, behold, was indeed speaking the truth!" ### Marmaduke Pickthall He (the king) (then sent for those women and) said: What happened when ye asked an evil act of Joseph? They answered: Allah Blameless! We know no evil of him. Said the wife of the ruler: Now the truth is out. I asked of him an evil act, and he is surely of the truthful. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Thereupon the king asked the women:[1] "What happened when you sought to tempt Joseph?" They said: "Allah forbid! We found no evil in him." The chief's wife said: "Now the truth has come to light. It was I who sought to tempt him. He is indeed truthful."[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] As regards to the way in which this inquiry was held, it is just possible that the king might have summoned the women to his presence or gotten their evidence through a trusted officer of his court. - [2] The inquiry and the evidences must have helped to pave the way for Prophet Joseph’s rise in the land by concentrating the public attention on him, especially under the circumstances when the inquiry had been demanded by him. He had interpreted the dream of the king, when all the wise men, sooth sayers and the magicians had failed. Then he had refused to quit prison even though the king himself had ordered that he should be brought before him, and, instead of this, demanded an inquiry of the matter which had been the cause of his imprisonment. Naturally this thing would have filled the people with wonder and they would have been looking eagerly for the result of the inquiry. Thus it can be imagined how the evidences and the result of the inquiry raised his prestige so high that the king and his courtiers declared that he was the only fit person to save the country from the coming calamity. It is no wonder, then, that Prophet Joseph proposed that all the resources of the land should be placed in his hands, and the king accepted this proposal as soon as it was made. For, had it been merely the matter of the interpretation of a dream, the most he would have deserved was some reward and his release from prison. But he could not have said: Place the resources of the land in my hands, and the king would not have readily acceded to his proposal and given him all the powers in the land, as is contained in (Ayats 55-56), and confirmed by the Bible and the Talmud. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab There and then did the king summon the women and question them. He asked: "What was your purpose and intention when you tried to solicit Yusuf?" They said: "Allah forbid, we have never known him to be morally depraved". The court official's wife, now being brought to her senses said: "Now that the truth transpired, it was I who solicited him and he has indeed been telling the truth." ### Bijan Moeinian The king asked the women about the incidence. They all said: "God have mercy on us; we found not a bit of evil in Joseph. When it came to the woman who had accused him at first place, she said: “Now that the truth has sipped out, I confess that it was I who tried to seduce him. He is indeed a virtuous man." ### Al-Hilali & Khan (The King) said (to the women): "What was your affair when you did seek to seduce Yûsuf (Joseph)?" The women said: "Allâh forbid! No evil know we against him!" The wife of Al-‘Azîz said: "Now the truth is manifest (to all); it was I who sought to seduce him, and he is surely of the truthful." ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali (The king) said (to the ladies): "What was your affair when ye did seek to seduce Joseph from his (true) self?" The ladies said: "Allah preserve us! no evil know we against him!" Said the 'Aziz's wife: "Now is the truth manifest (to all): it was I who sought to seduce him from his (true) self: He is indeed of those who are (ever) true (and virtuous). ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran The King asked ˹the women˺, "What did you get when you tried to seduce Joseph?" They replied, “Allah forbid! We know nothing indecent about him.” Then the Chief Minister’s wife admitted, “Now the truth has come to light. It was I who tried to seduce him, and he is surely truthful. ### Taqi Usmani He (the king) said, "What was your case, O women, when you seduced Yūsuf?" They said, “God forbid, we know of no evil in him.” The governor’s wife said, “Now the truth has come to light. I did seduce him, and he is surely truthful.” ### Abdul Haleem The king asked the women, ‘What happened when you tried to seduce Joseph?’ They said, ‘God forbid! We know nothing bad of him!’ and the governor’s wife said, ‘Now the truth is out: it was I who tried to seduce him- he is an honest man.’ ### Arthur John Arberry 'What was your business, women,' he said, 'when you solicited Joseph?' 'God save us!' they said. 'We know no evil against him.' The Governor's wife said, 'Now the truth is at last discovered; I solicited him; he is a truthful man. ### E. Henry Palmer He said, 'What was your design when ye desired Joseph for his person?' They said, 'God forbid! we know no bad of him. ' Said the wife of the prince, ' Now does the truth appear! I desired him for his person and, verily, he is of those who tell the truth.' ### Hamid S. Aziz Then the king (after he had been told) said, "Bring him (Joseph) unto me. " And when the messenger came unto him, Joseph said, "Return to your Lord, and ask him, what is the state of mind of the women who cut their hands? Verily, my lord knows their guile." ### Mahmoud Ghali He said, (i. e., the king said to the women) "What was your concern as you solicited Yûsuf?" They said, " Allah forbid! In no way do we know any odious (deeds) against him." The wife of the governor (Literally: the ever-mighty Al-Aîz) said, "Now the truth has come to light; I did solicit him; and surely he is indeed one of the sincere. ### George Sale And when the women were assembled before the king, he said unto them, what was your design, when ye solicited Joseph to unlawful love? They answered, God be praise! We know not any ill of him. The nobleman's wife said, now is the truth become manifest: I solicited him, to lie with me; and he is one of those who speak truth. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed (The king) said (to the ladies): "What was your affair when you wanted to seduce Yusuf (Joseph) from his (true) self?" The ladies said: "Allah save us! We know of no evil against him! The ‘Aziz's wife said: "Now the truth is clear (to all): It was I who wanted to seduce him from his (true) self: He is surely from those who are (always) true (and noble). ### Amatul Rahman Omar (The king then sent for the ladies and to them) he said, `What was that important matter (in reality) that you had in view when you sought to seduce Joseph against his will?' They said, `He kept away (from committing sin) for the sake of Allâh. We did not perceive the least evil (intention) on his part.' The wife of the `Azîz said, `Now the truth has come to light (at last). It was I who sought to seduce him against his will and most surely he is of the truthful.' ### Ali Quli Qarai The king said, ‘What was your business, women, when you solicited Joseph?’ They said, ‘Heaven be praised! We know of no evil in him. ’ The prince’s wife said, ‘Now the truth has come to light! It was I who solicited him, and he is indeed telling the truth.’ ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü (Melik, kadınlara) dedi ki: "Yusuf'u ayartmak istediğinizde ne yaptı?". . . "Haşa! Allah için, Onun bir kötü davranışına şahit olmadık" dediler. Aziyz'in karısı ise: "Şimdi Hak ortaya çıktı! Ben Onu ayartmak istedim. . . Onlar: "Haşa, Allah için biz onun aleyhine bir kötülük bilmiyoruz!" dediler. Azizin karısı: "Şimdi gerçek ortaya çıktı; onun nefsinden ben kam almak istedim. Onlar: "Tanrı için, haşa" dediler. "Biz ondan hiç bir kötülük görmedik." Aziz (Vezir)in de karısı dedi ki: "İşte şu anda gerçek orta yere çıktı; onun nefsinden ben murad almak istemiştim. O ise gerçekten doğruyu söylenlerdendir." ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim (Padişah o kadınları toplayıb) dedi: "Yuusufun nefsinden kam almak istediğiniz zaman ne halde idiniz"?. (Kadınlar): "Haaşa, dediler, Allah için biz onun üstünde bir fenalık bilmedik". Azizin karısı da şöyle dedi: "Şimdi hak meydana çıkdı. Ben onun nefsinden murad almak istedim. O ise seksiz şübhesiz doğru söyleyenlerdendir". ### İbni Kesir Dedi ki: Yusuf'tan kam almak istediğiniz zaman ne halde idiniz? Onlar dediler ki: Haşa, Allah için biz onun bir kötülüğünü görmedik. Aziz'in karısı da şöyle dedi: Şimdi hak ortaya çıktı. Onu kendime ben ram etmek istedim. Ve o, gerçekten sadıklardandır. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı (Bunun üzerine Kral o kadınları çağırtıp kendilerine:) "Yusuf'un gönlünü çelmek isterken ne sağlayacağınızı umuyordunuz?" diye sordu. Kadınlar: "Allah korusun, biz o'ndan en küçük bir kötülük görmedik!" dediler. (Ve) Yusuf'un ilk efendisinin hanımı: "Artık gerçek ortaya çıktı!" diye atıldı, "Onun gönlünü çelmek isteyen bendim; o ise hep özü sözü doğru olan kimselerdendi!" ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı (Hükümdar kadınlara): -İsteklerinizle Yusuf'a ısrar ettiğiniz zaman durumunuz neydi? dedi. Kadınlar: -Haşa, Onun bir kötülüğünü görmedik, dediler. Vezirin karısı: -Şimdi gerçek anlaşıldı. Nefsine uyan bendim.
