Surah Yunus (Jonas) — سورة يونس - **Verse:** 87 / 109 · **Juz:** 11 · **Mushaf page:** 217 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-yunus/verse-87 ## Arabic وَاَوْحَيْنَٓا اِلٰى مُوسٰى وَاَخ۪يهِ اَنْ تَبَوَّاٰ لِقَوْمِكُمَا بِمِصْرَ بُيُوتاً وَاجْعَلُوا بُيُوتَكُمْ قِبْلَةً وَاَق۪يمُوا الصَّلٰوةَۜ وَبَشِّرِ الْمُؤْمِن۪ينَ ## Transcription Waawhayna ila moosawaakheehi an tabawwaa liqawmikuma bimisrabuyootan wajAAaloo buyootakum qiblatan waaqeemoo assalatawabashshiri almu/mineen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley We revealed to Musa and his brother: ‘Settle your people in houses in Egypt and make your houses places of worship and establish salat and give good news to the muminun. ’ ### Progressive Muslims And We inspired to Moses and his brother: "Let your people leave their homes in Egypt, and let these homes be your focal point and hold the contact-method. And give good news to the believers." ### Shabbir Ahmed We commanded Moses and his brother, "Maintain your homes in Egypt, and turn them into places of worship to remember God. "Maintain your homes in Egypt for the time being, turn your homes into synagogues, and maintain the Contact Prayers (Salat). Give good news to the believers." ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira We commanded Moses and his brother: "Build homes for your people in Egypt, and make your houses places of worship, perform your acts of prayer and give happy tidings to those who believe. " ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And We inspired to Moses and his brother, "Settle your people in Egypt in houses and make your houses [facing the] qiblah and establish prayer and give good tidings to the believers. " ### Muhammad Asad And [thus] did We inspire Moses and his brother: "Set aside for your people some houses in the city, and [tell them], `Turn your houses into places of worship, and be constant in prayer!' And give thou [O Moses] the glad tiding [of God's succour] to all believers. " ### Marmaduke Pickthall And We inspired Moses and his brother, (saying): Appoint houses for your people in Egypt and make your houses oratories, and establish worship. And give good news to the believers. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary And We directed Moses and his brother: 'Prepare a few houses for your people in Egypt, and make your houses a direction for men to pray, and establish Prayer,[1] and give glad tidings to the men of faith.[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] There is a difference of opinion among the commentators in regard to the meaning of this verse. As for me, I have considered deeply its wording and the circumstances under which this was sent down, and have come to the conclusion that Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) was commanded to build or acquire some houses for the establishment of Salat in congregation This was necessitated because the system of Salat in congregation had been abandoned by the Israelites and the Egyptian Muslims as a result of their persecution by the government, and owing to the weakness of their faith. As this had brought about their disintegration and killed their religious spirit, it was essential to re-establish the system of Salat in congregation, which is indeed the first and foremost thing for the revival of that spirit and the integration of a scattered Muslim community and its powers. - [2] As regards to appointing your houses as qiblah, I am of the opinion that it means: Set apart these houses as common places of worship for offering Salat in congregation and the central places for holding their meetings. That is why it is followed by establishing Salat, which means that they should offer their Salat collectively in congregation instead of individually. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab There, We inspired Mussa and his brother Harun to provide their people with dwellings in the land of Egypt, and We said to them: "Make of your homes oratories representing a Qibla (Kibl ### Bijan Moeinian I ordered Moses and his brother: "For the moment, devote a few houses of yours for the performance of religious ceremonies.
