Surah Yunus (Jonas) — سورة يونس - **Verse:** 39 / 109 · **Juz:** 11 · **Mushaf page:** 212 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-yunus/verse-39 ## Arabic بَلْ كَذَّبُوا بِمَا لَمْ يُح۪يطُوا بِعِلْمِه۪ وَلَمَّا يَأْتِهِمْ تَأْو۪يلُهُۜ كَذٰلِكَ كَذَّبَ الَّذ۪ينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ فَانْظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الظَّالِم۪ينَ ## Transcription Bal kaththaboo bima lam yuheetoobiAAilmihi walamma ya/tihim ta/weeluhu kathalika kaththabaallatheena min qablihim fanthurkayfa kana AAaqibatu aththalimeen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley No, the fact is that they have denied something which their knowledge does not embrace and the meaning of which has not yet reached them. In the same way those before them also denied the truth. See the final fate of the wrongdoers! ### Progressive Muslims No, they have lied about that which they did not have knowledge of, nor has its explanation come to them. It is also how those before them denied, so see how was the retribution of the wicked! ### Shabbir Ahmed Nay, they deny it without grasping the profound knowledge therein. And they have yet to see the benevolent transformation it can bring about in the making of humanity. Generations before them rejected Divine Revelation. Then see what was the consequence for those who thus wronged themselves! ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation The truth is, they have denied what they compassed not in knowledge, and whose interpretation has not yet come to them. Thus denied those before them. Thus did those before them deny. Then observe how was the end of the wrongdoers. ### Muhammad Asad Nay, but they are bent on giving the lie to everything the wisdom whereof they do not comprehend, and ere its inner meaning has become clear to them Even thus did those who lived before their time give the lie to the truth: and behold what happened in the end to those evildoers! ### Marmaduke Pickthall Nay, but they denied that, the knowledge whereof they could not compass, and whereof the interpretation (in events) hath not yet come unto them. Even so did those before them deny. Then see what was the consequence for the wrong-doers! ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary In fact they arbitrarily rejected as false whatever they failed to comprehend and whose final sequel was not apparent to them.[1] Likewise had their predecessors rejected the truth, declaring it falsehood. Do observe, then, what was the end of the wrong-doers. _Footnotes_ - [1] They could declare the Quran as forged on two grounds only, but neither of these existed: First, if they had had a proof that the Book had not been revealed by Allah, but had been forged by someone; secondly, that the truths enunciated in it and the information given in it were false. But no one could say on the basis of true knowledge that the Book had been really forged and then ascribed to God: nor could anyone say that he had peeped behind the curtains of the unseen and discovered that there was not One God (as taught in this Book) but many gods in the heavens: nor could anyone assert on the basis of true knowledge that there were no angels, no revelations and no God, but these were mere fictions that had been invented by some fertile imagination: nor had anyone witnessed by actually visiting the Hereafter that the information about rewards and punishments was utterly wrong. But in spite of the lack of any proof to the contrary; they were challenging the genuineness of the Quran with the boldness and impudence of one who had made a thorough research into the matter and proved it to be false. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab The fact is that: they deny the Quran and assert that it is false without deliberating on its divine discourse and without knowledge of its precepts, nor has its interpretation been given yet. Similarly reacted their predecessors under the vexations of their minds, and you can see the fatal consequence of the wrongful of actions. ### Bijan Moeinian The fact of the matter is, they have rejected Qur’an without studying it or contemplating about its verses. The previous disbelievers did the same thing and see where they ended up. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Nay, they have belied the knowledge whereof they could not comprehend and what has not yet been fulfilled (i.e. their punishment). Thus those before them did belie. Then see what was the end of the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers)! ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Nay, they charge with falsehood that whose knowledge they cannot compass, even before the elucidation thereof hath reached them: thus did those before them make charges of falsehood: but see what was the end of those who did wrong! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran In fact, they ˹hastily˺ rejected the Book without comprehending it and before the fulfilment of its warnings. Similarly, those before them were in denial. See then what was the end of the wrongdoers! ### Taqi Usmani But they have rejected a thing they could not comprehend with knowledge, while its ultimate end has not appeared to them as yet. Similarly those who passed before them had rejected the truth. So, look how was the fate of the unjust. ### Abdul Haleem But they are denying what they cannot comprehend- its prophecy has yet to be fulfilled for them.
