Surah Yunus (Jonas) — سورة يونس - **Verse:** 20 / 109 · **Juz:** 11 · **Mushaf page:** 209 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-yunus/verse-20 ## Arabic وَيَقُولُونَ لَوْلَٓا اُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اٰيَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّه۪ۚ فَقُلْ اِنَّمَا الْغَيْبُ لِلّٰهِ فَانْتَظِرُواۚ اِنّ۪ي مَعَكُمْ مِنَ الْمُنْتَظِر۪ينَ۟ ## Transcription Wayaqooloona lawla onzila AAalayhi ayatunmin rabbihi faqul innama alghaybu lillahi fantathirooinnee maAAakum mina almuntathireen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley They say, ‘Why has a Sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?’ Say: ‘The Unseen belongs to Allah alone. So wait, I am waiting with you.’ ### Progressive Muslims And they Say: "If only a sign was sent down to him from His Lord. " Say: "The future is with God, so wait, and I will wait with you." ### Shabbir Ahmed And they say, "Why was not a miracle sent down upon him from his Lord?" Then answer (O Prophet), "The Unseen is known to Allah alone. Wait for the results of my Program. Indeed, I shall be waiting with you." So say, "The unseen is only for Allah [to administer], so wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait. " ### Muhammad Asad NOW THEY [who deny the truth] are wont to ask, "Why has no miraculous sign ever been bestowed upon him from on high by his Sustainer?" Say, then: "God's alone is the knowledge of that which. is beyond the reach of human perception. Wait, then, [until His will becomes manifest:] verily, I shall wait with you!" ### Marmaduke Pickthall And they will say: If only a portent were sent down upon him from his Lord! Then say, (O Muhammad): The Unseen belongeth to Allah. So wait! Lo! I am waiting with you. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary They say: 'Why was a sign not sent down upon the prophet from His Lord?[1] Tell (such people): 'The realm of the Unseen belongs to Allah. Wait, then; I shall wait along with you.[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, though they demanded a sign as a proof of the fact that he was a true Prophet (peace be upon him) and was presenting true revelations, this was not based on a genuine desire for recognizing and accepting the truth but was merely a pretext for rejecting it. For they had no intention of molding their habits, their morality, their social system, in short, reforming every aspect of their life in accordance with the implications of the acceptance of the Message of the Prophet (peace be upon him). As they did not intend to believe in it, they would say even after seeing a sign: No sign had been shown to them. Obviously, they would not give up that freedom which they were enjoying in following their desires and lusts, by accepting the unseen (the creeds of Tauhid and the Hereafter), which would bind them to the absolute moral principles. - [2] That is, I have presented before you what Allah has sent down to me. But what He has not sent down to me is unseen, both for me and for you, and it is entirely with Allah to reveal or not to reveal it. Now if you will not believe unless Allah sends down what He has not sent down, you may wait for it: I, too, shall wait and see whether your persistent demand is or is not satisfied. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab They -the idolaters- insolently say: "If only a sign other than the Quran be revealed to evince both his wisdom and the truth of his mission!" Say to them O Muhammad: "Divination of things to come rests in the hands of Allah Who knows the hidden, the unknown and all that is destined to come, therefore, you just wait O people, I will also await with you future events". ### Bijan Moeinian They say: "How come Mohammad’s Lord has not sent a miracle as a sign for his prophet hood?" Reply: “The Lord is the Master of the world of unseen [it is up to Him to bless me with a miracle or not. Besides, did such undeniable miracles of the previous prophet change the attitude of their people?] Well, wait (for this undeniable miracle that you are looking for.) I, too, will wait with you (for the completion of the biggest miracle of all, i.e., this Qur’an.) ### Al-Hilali & Khan And they say: "How is it that not a sign is sent down on him from his Lord?" Say: "The Unseen belongs to Allâh Alone, so wait you, verily, I am with you among those who wait (for Allâh’s Judgement)." ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali They say: "Why is not a sign sent down to him from his Lord?" Say: "The Unseen is only for Allah (to know), then wait ye: I too will wait with you." ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran They ask, "Why has no ˹other˺ sign been sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “˹The knowledge of˺ the unseen is with Allah alone. So wait! I too am waiting with you.” ### Taqi Usmani And they say, "Why is it that no sign has been sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, “The Unseen is only for Allah. So, wait. I am waiting with you.” ### Abdul Haleem They say, ‘Why has no miraculous sign been sent down to him from his Lord?’ Say [Prophet], ‘Only God knows the unseen, so wait- I too am waiting.’ ### Arthur John Arberry They say, 'Why has a sign not been sent down upon him from his Lord?' Say then, `The hidden reality (will come to pass. The knowledge of it) belongs to Allâh alone, so wait (for the time ordained). Surely, I am with you among those who wait.' ### Ali Quli Qarai They say, ‘Why has not some sign been sent down to him from his Lord?’ Say, ‘[The knowledge of] the Unseen belongs only to Allah. So wait.
