Surah Yunus (Jonas) — سورة يونس - **Verse:** 15 / 109 · **Juz:** 11 · **Mushaf page:** 209 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-yunus/verse-15 ## Arabic وَاِذَا تُتْلٰى عَلَيْهِمْ اٰيَاتُنَا بَيِّنَاتٍۙ قَالَ الَّذ۪ينَ لَا يَرْجُونَ لِقَٓاءَنَا ائْتِ بِقُرْاٰنٍ غَيْرِ هٰذَٓا اَوْ بَدِّلْهُۜ قُلْ مَا يَكُونُ ل۪ٓي اَنْ اُبَدِّلَهُ مِنْ تِلْقَٓائِ۬ نَفْس۪يۚ اِنْ اَتَّبِعُ اِلَّا مَا يُوحٰٓى اِلَيَّۚ اِنّ۪ٓي اَخَافُ اِنْ عَصَيْتُ رَبّ۪ي عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظ۪يمٍ ## Transcription Wa-itha tutla AAalayhim ayatunabayyinatin qala allatheena layarjoona liqaana i/ti biqur-anin ghayri hathaaw baddilhu qul ma yakoonu lee an obaddilahu min tilqa-inafsee in attabiAAu illa ma yooha ilayyainnee akhafu in AAasaytu rabbee AAathabayawmin AAatheem ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley When Our Clear Signs are recited to them, those who do not expect to meet Us say, ‘Bring a Qur’an other than this one or change it. ’ Say: ‘It is not for me to change it of my own accord. I follow nothing except what is revealed to me. I fear, were I to disobey my Lord, the punishment of a Dreadful Day.’ ### Progressive Muslims And when Our clear revelations are recited to them, those who do not wish to meet Us said: "Bring a Quran other than this, or change it!" Say: "It is not for me to change it from my own accord, I merely follow what is inspired to me. I fear if I disobey my Lord the retribution of a great day!" ### Shabbir Ahmed When Our Messages are conveyed to them in all clarity, those who hope not that they are destined to meet with Us, (want to strike a deal with the Messenger). They say, "Bring us a Qur'an other than this or make some changes in it." Say (O Prophet), "It is not conceivable that I would alter it myself. I only follow what is revealed to me. I cannot disobey my Lord, for I fear the retribution of a Mighty Day." ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And when Our proofs are recited to them as clear signs, those who look not for the meeting with Us say: “Bring thou a Qur’an other than this; or change thou it.” Say thou: “It is not for me to change it of my own accord. If I disobey my Lord, I fear the punishment of an awful Day." ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who do not expect the meeting with Us say, "Bring us a Qur'an other than this or change it. " Say, [O Muúammad], "It is not for me to change it on my own accord. I only follow what is revealed to me. Indeed I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day." ### Muhammad Asad AND [thus it is:] whenever Our messages are conveyed unto them in all their clarity, those who do not believe that they are destined to meet Us [are wont to] say, "Bring us a discourse other than this, or alter this one. " Say [O Prophet]: "It is not conceivable that I should alter it of my own volition; I only follow what is revealed to me. Behold, I would dread, were I [thus] to rebel against my Sustainer, the suffering [which would befall me] on that awesome Day [of Judgment]!" ### Marmaduke Pickthall And when Our clear revelations are recited unto them, they who look not for the meeting with Us say: Bring a Lecture other than this, or change it. Say (O Muhammad): It is not for me to change it of my accord. I only follow that which is inspired in me. Lo! if I disobey my Lord I fear the retribution of an awful Day. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary And whenever Our clear revelations are recited to them, those who do not expect to meet Us say: 'Bring us a Qur'an other than this one, or at least make changes in it.[1] Tell them (O Muhammad): 'It is not for me to change it of my accord. I only follow what is revealed to me. Were I to disobey my Lord, I fear the chastisement of an Awesome Day.[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] They implied two things when they said these words. First, they meant that what Muhammad (peace be upon him) was presenting as divine revelation was really the product of his own mind but he was ascribing it to Allah merely to make his claim weighty. Secondly, they implied this: If you want to be the leader of your people, present something that may make them prosperous in the world and give up the doctrines of Tauhid and the Hereafter and the moral restrictions you are prescribing in your teaching. And if it is not possible, make some amendments in the Quran so that a compromise may be made between you and us on the principle of give and take so that there should be some scope for our shirk in your Tauhid and for our self worship and for our salvation in the Hereafter, irrespective of what we do in this world. You should also note it well that we cannot accept your absolute morality: therefore you should make an allowance for our prejudices, our rites and customs, our personal and national interests and our desires. We propose that with mutual agreement we should make a list of those religious demands which should be obligatory on us for the fulfillment of Allah’s rights, and beyond that we should be free to conduct our worldly affairs in any way we like. This compromise is necessary because we cannot accept your demand that human life in all its aspects should entirely be led in accordance with the implications of the doctrines of Tauhid and the Hereafter and the regulations of the Islamic code of life. - [2] This is the answer to the two above mentioned demands: I have no authority of making any alterations in this Book for I am not its author but Allah is the One Who is sending it down to me. Therefore there is no question of any compromise about it. If you want to accept its way, you will have to accept it as it is; otherwise you are free to reject it. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab When Our revelations are recited to them -to the idolaters- emitting thoughts of piety and divine enlightenment, they react with revulsion of feeling and they insolently say: "Bring a Quran different from this or substitute the words We do not like for others to our taste" Say to them O Muhammad "it is not within my power to make changes of my own accord; I only follow all that is inspired to me, nor do I dare to disobey Allah, my Creator, for the penalty shall be the torment that is suffered on a Momentous Day". ### Bijan Moeinian When My straight forward commandments are communicated to them, those (who do not believe that they will meet Me one day) say: "Why do you not fabricate another Qur’an and put in it such and such things to please us?" Answer: “I have not fabricated this Qur’an so that I may re-write it. I do not follow nothing but what is revealed to me. Indeed I am afraid of disobeying my Lord’s commandments and be sentenced to a punishment on the most awesome Day.” ### Al-Hilali & Khan And when Our clear Verses are recited unto them, those who hope not for their meeting with Us, say: "Bring us a Qur’ân other than this, or change it." Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "It is not for me to change it on my own accord; I only follow that which is revealed unto me. Verily, I fear the torment of the Great Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) if I were to disobey my Lord." ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali But when Our Clear Signs are rehearsed unto them, those who rest not their hope on their meeting with Us, Say: "Bring us a reading other than this, or change this," Say: "It is not for me, of my own accord, to change it: I follow naught but what is revealed unto me: if I were to disobey my Lord, I should myself fear the penalty of a Great Day (to come)." ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran When Our clear revelations are recited to them, those who do not expect to meet Us say ˹to the Prophet˺, "Bring us a different Quran or make some changes in it." Say ˹to them˺, “It is not for me to change it on my own. I only follow what is revealed to me. I fear, if I were to disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day.” ### Taqi Usmani When Our verses are recited to them in all their clarity, say those who do not believe in meeting Us, "Bring a Qur’ān other than this, or make changes in it (to suit our fancies)". Say, “It is not possible for me to make changes in it on my own. I follow nothing but what is revealed to me. If I disobey my Lord, I fear the punishment of a terrible day.” ### Abdul Haleem When Our clear revelations are recited to them, those who do not expect to meet with Us say, ‘Bring [us] a different Quran, or change it.’ [Prophet], say, ‘It is not for me to change it of my own accord; I only follow what is revealed to me, for I fear the torment of an awesome Day, if I were to disobey my Lord.’ ### Arthur John Arberry And when Our signs are recited to them, clear signs, those who look not to encounter Us say, 'Bring a Koran other than this, or alter it. Aziz Then We made you Vicegerents (or their successors) in the earth after them, that We may see how you will act. ### Mahmoud Ghali And when Our Supremely evident ayat (Signs, verses) are recited to them, the ones who do not hope for meeting with Us say, "Come up with a Qur'an other than this or exchange it. " Say, "In no way (can) I exchange it of my own accord. Decidedly I closely follow (nothing) except what is revealed to me. Surely I fear, in case I disobey my Lord, the torment of a tremendous Day.". ### George Sale When our evident signs are recited unto them, they who hope not to meet us at the resurrection, say, bring a different Koran from this; or make some change therein. Answer, it is not fit for me, that I should change it at my pleasure: I follow that only which is revealed unto me. Verily I fear, if I should be disobedient unto my Lord, the punishment of the great day. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed And when Our Clear Signs (verses) are rehearsed on them, those who do not keep their hope on their meeting with Us, say: "Bring to us a Quran other than this, or change this," say: "It is not for me, to change it by myself: I follow nothing except what is made known to me: If I was to disobey my Lord, I should fear the penalty of a Great Day. " ### Amatul Rahman Omar When Our clear verses are recited to them, those who fear not the meeting with Us, nor do they cherish any hope (for the same,) say, `Bring a Qur'ân other than this one or (at least) make some changes in it. ' Say (to them), `It is not for me to introduce changes in it of my own accord. I follow nothing but what is revealed to me. Truly if I disobey my Lord I fear the punishment of a great (dreadful) Day.' ### Ali Quli Qarai When Our manifest signs are recited to them, those who do not expect to encounter Us say, ‘Bring a Qur’ān other than this, or alter it. ’ Say, ‘I may not alter it of my own accord. I follow only what is revealed to me. Ben, Rabbıma karşı gelirsem; büyük bir günün azabından korkarım. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Ve (hal böyleyken:) ne zaman ayetlerimiz bütün açıklığıyla kendilerine okunup ulaştırılsa, o Bizim huzurumuza çıkacaklarına inanası gelmeyen kimseler, "Bize bundan başka bir söylem/bir öğreti getir; ya da bunu değiştir" diyecek olurlar.
