Surah Sad (The letter Saad) — سورة ص - **Verse:** 27 / 88 · **Juz:** 23 · **Mushaf page:** 454 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-sad/verse-27 ## Arabic وَمَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمَٓاءَ وَالْاَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا بَاطِلاًۜ ذٰلِكَ ظَنُّ الَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُواۚ فَوَيْلٌ لِلَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُوا مِنَ النَّارِۜ ## Transcription Wama khalaqna assamaawal-arda wama baynahuma batilanthalika thannu allatheena kafaroofawaylun lillatheena kafaroo mina annar ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley We did not create heaven and earth and everything between them to no purpose. That is the opinion of those who are kafir. Woe to those who are kafir, because of the Fire! ### Progressive Muslims And We did not create the heaven and the Earth, and everything between them, in vain. Such is the thinking of those who rejected. Therefore, woe to those who have rejected from the Fire. ### Shabbir Ahmed (No action goes uncompensated since) We have not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in vain - without meaning and purpose. Only those who deny imagine so. So for the unbelievers there is woe from the fire. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And We did not create the heaven and the earth and that between them aimlessly. That is the assumption of those who disbelieve, so woe to those who disbelieve from the Fire. ### Muhammad Asad AND [thus it is:] We have not created heaven and earth and all that is between them without meaning and purpose, as is the surmise of those who are bent on denying the truth: but then, woe from the fire [of hell] unto all who are bent on denying the truth! ### Marmaduke Pickthall And We created not the heaven and the earth and all that is between them in vain. That is the opinion of those who disbelieve. And woe unto those who disbelieve, from the Fire! ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary We did not create this heaven and earth and all that lies between them in vain. That is the fancy of those who denied the Truth.[1] So woe from the Fire to all who deny the Truth. _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, We have not created anything in the world merely in sport and fun so that it may be without any wisdom and purpose and justice, and there may occur no result from any act, good or bad. This is the conclusion of the preceding discourse as well as an introduction to the following theme. The object of this statement as a conclusion to the discourse is to impress the following truth: Man has not been left to wander about at will in the world, nor is this world a lawless kingdom that one may do here whatever he likes with impunity. As an introduction to the following theme, the sentence is meant to say: The person who does not believe in the meting out of the rewards and punishments, and thinks that both the good and the evil people will ultimately end up in the dust after death and that nobody will be called to account, nor will anyone be rewarded for good or punished for evil, in fact, regards the world as a plaything and its Creator a senseless player, and thinks that by creating the world and man in it, the Creator of the Universe has committed a useless thing. The same thing has been stated in different ways at several places in the Quran, e.g. Did you think that We created you without any purpose, and that you would never be brought back to Us? (Surah Al-Muminun, Ayat 115). ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab We did not create the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them in vain as the infidels have thought, they brew falsehood and think falsehood; Woe to them, they shall be the fuel for the fire. ### Bijan Moeinian I (God) have not created the heavens, the earth and anything between in vain [so that you play any game without worrying about its consequences. ] This is the fancy of those who have chosen to disbelieve. Pity to such disbelievers who will end up in Hellfire. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And We created not the heaven and the earth and all that is between them without purpose! That is the consideration of those who disbelieve! Then woe to those who disbelieve (in Islâmic Monotheism) from the Fire! ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Not without purpose did We create heaven and earth and all between! that were the thought of Unbelievers! but woe to the Unbelievers because of the Fire (of Hell)! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran We have not created the heavens and earth and everything in between without purpose—as the disbelievers think. So woe to the disbelievers because of the Fire! ### Taqi Usmani We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them in vain. That is the thinking of those who disbelieve.
