Surah Saba (Sheba) — سورة سَبَأ - **Verse:** 33 / 54 · **Juz:** 22 · **Mushaf page:** 431 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-saba/verse-33 ## Arabic وَقَالَ الَّذ۪ينَ اسْتُضْعِفُوا لِلَّذ۪ينَ اسْتَكْبَرُوا بَلْ مَكْرُ الَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ اِذْ تَأْمُرُونَـنَٓا اَنْ نَكْفُرَ بِاللّٰهِ وَنَجْعَلَ لَهُٓ اَنْدَاداًۜ وَاَسَرُّوا النَّدَامَةَ لَمَّا رَاَوُا الْعَذَابَۜ وَجَعَلْنَا الْاَغْلَالَ ف۪ٓي اَعْنَاقِ الَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُواۜ هَلْ يُجْزَوْنَ اِلَّا مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ ## Transcription Waqala allatheena istudAAifoolillatheena istakbaroo bal makru allayli wannahariith ta/muroonana an nakfura billahiwanajAAala lahu andadan waasarroo annadamatalamma raawoo alAAathaba wajaAAalna al-aghlalafee aAAnaqi allatheena kafaroo hal yujzawna illama kanoo yaAAmaloon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Those deemed weak will say to those deemed great, ‘No, it was your scheming night and day when you commanded us to reject Allah and assign equals to Him. ’ But they will show their remorse when they see the punishment. We will put iron collars round the necks of those who are kafir. Will they be repaid for anything but what they did? ### Progressive Muslims And those who were weak will say to those who were mighty: "No, it was your scheming night and day, when you commanded us to reject God, and to set up equals to Him. " And they will be filled with regret, when they see the retribution. And We will place shackles around the necks of those who rejected. Are they not being requited for what they used to do ### Shabbir Ahmed The commoners will say to their leaders, "Nay, you were the ones who schemed night and day to set up systems that we were forced to follow, instead of Allah. It is you who set up (yourselves as) rivals against Him." Both parties will then be ashamed when they see the Requital. We will put shackles around the necks of all those who rejected the Truth. Is their retribution anything but what they earned with their own actions? ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And those who were despised will say to those who had waxed proud: “Nay, it was your scheme night and day, when you commanded us to deny God and make equals to Him.” And they will whisper remorse when they see the punishment, and We place yokes on the necks of those who ignore warning. And they are filled with regret when they see the retribution and We will place shackles around the necks of those who rejected. Are they not being requited for what they used to do? ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament The followers will say to their leaders, "It was you who schemed night and day, then commanded us to be unappreciative of GOD, and to set up idols to rank with Him." They will be ridden with remorse, when they see the retribution, for we will place shackles around the necks of those who disbelieved. Are they not justly requited for what they did? ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira But the weak will say to the arrogant: "Not in the least. It was your plotting night and day when you ordered us to disbelieve in God and associate compeers with Him." When they see the punishment they will express repentance. But We shall put iron collars round the necks of infidels. Will they be requited for anything but what they did? ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Those who were oppressed will say to those who were arrogant, "Rather, [it was your] conspiracy of night and day when you were ordering us to disbelieve in Allah and attribute to Him equals. " But they will [all] confide regret when they see the punishment; and We will put shackles on the necks of those who disbelieved. Will they be recompensed except for what they used to do? ### Muhammad Asad But those who had been weak will say unto those who had gloried in their arrogance: "Nay, [what kept us away was your] devising of false arguments, night and day, [against God’s messages- as you did] when you persuaded us to blaspheme against God and to claim that there are powers that could rival Him!" And when they see the suffering [that awaits them], they will [all] be unable to express [the full depth of] their remorse: for We shall have put shackles around the necks of those who had been bent on denying the truth: [and] will this be aught but a [just] requital for what they were doing? ### Marmaduke Pickthall Those who were despised say unto those who were proud: Nay but (it was your) scheming night and day, when ye commanded us to disbelieve in Allah and set up rivals unto Him. And they are filled with remorse when they behold the doom; and We place carcans on the necks of those who disbelieved. Are they requited aught save what they used to do? ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Those who were suppressed will say to those who waxed arrogant: "By no means; it was your scheming, night and day, when you would enjoin us to disbelieve in Allah and set up others as equals to Him."[1] When they are confronted with the chastisement, they will be remorseful in their hearts. We shall put fetters around the necks of the unbelievers. Can people be requited except for their deeds? _Footnotes_ - [1] In other words, the common people’s reply will be: "How can you hold us as equal partners in this responsibility? Do you also remember what sort of trickeries and deceptions and false propaganda you practiced and what efforts you used to make to tempt and entice the people day and night. It is not just that you presented the world before us and we were allured, but this is also a fact that you used to befool us by your frauds and deceptions and each one of you brought a new bait every day to tempt and lure the simple people." ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And there shall the passively-minded say to those who exercised inordinate self-esteem: "but you took cunning for a sinister and crooked wisdom and you made its breastplate work day and night and you kept pressing hard upon us for adopting polytheism and you urged us to deny Allah as the only Ilah and to incorporate with Him other deities". Deep in their hearts they will feel their guilt with pining regrets and vain repentances when they see the inescapable punishment. We will fetter and confine the infidels with chains around their necks. Would they be requited but with what is commensurate with their deeds?" ### Bijan Moeinian The weak ones will reply: "It was you who campaigned day and night to idolize the others beside God. " Finally, when they face their punishment, they will repent sincerely but [it will be too late and] they will get shackles around their necks. Do they not deserve to be punished for what they did? ### Al-Hilali & Khan Those who were deemed weak will say to those who were arrogant: "Nay, but it was your plotting by night and day: when you ordered us to disbelieve in Allâh and set up rivals to Him!" And each of them (parties) will conceal their own regrets (for disobeying Allâh during this worldly life), when they behold the torment. And We shall put iron collars round the necks of those who disbelieved. Are they requited aught except what they used to do? ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Those who had been despised will say to the arrogant ones: "Nay! it was a plot (of yours) by day and by night: Behold! Ye (constantly) ordered us to be ungrateful to Allah and to attribute equals to Him!" They will declare (their) repentance when they see the Penalty: We shall put yokes on the necks of the Unbelievers: It would only be a requital for their (ill) Deeds. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran The lowly will say to the arrogant, "No! It was your plotting by day and night—when you ordered us to disbelieve in Allah and to set up equals with Him." They will ˹all˺ hide ˹their˺ remorse when they see the torment. And We will put shackles around the necks of the disbelievers. Will they be rewarded except for what they used to do? ### Taqi Usmani And those weak will say to those overbearing, "But (it was your) intriguing day and night (that stopped us from accepting guidance), when you were directing us to disbelieve in Allah and to set up rivals to Him." And all of them will conceal (their) regrets when they will see the punishment. And We will place iron-collars around the necks of those who disbelieved. They will not be recompensed except for what they used to do. ### Abdul Haleem The oppressed will say to them, ‘No, it was your scheming, night and day, ordering us to disbelieve in God and set up rivals to Him.’ When they see the punishment, they will fall silent with regret, and We shall put iron collars on the disbelievers’ necks. Why should they be rewarded for anything other than what they have done? ### Arthur John Arberry And those that were abased will say to those that waxed proud, 'Nay, but devising night and day, when you were ordering us to disbelieve in God, and to set up compeers to Him. ' They will be secretly remorseful when they see the chastisement and We put fetters on the necks of the unbelievers; shall they be recompensed except for what they were doing? ### E. Henry Palmer And those who were thought weak shall say to those who were big with pride, 'Nay, but it was the plotting by night and day, when ye did bid us to disbelieve in God, and to make peers for Him!' and they shall display repentance when they see the torment; and we will put fetters on the necks of those who misbelieved. Aziz Those who were proud shall say to those who were deemed weak (or despised), "Did we turn you away from the guidance after it had come to you? Nay, you (yourselves) were guilty. " ### Mahmoud Ghali And (the ones) who were deemed weak will say to (the ones) who waxed proud, "No indeed, (but) (it was your) scheming night and day-time as you commanded us to disbelieve in Allah and make up compeers to Him. " And they will keep secret (their) remorse as soon as they see the torment. And We made shackles on the necks of the ones who disbelieved; will they be recompensed except for whatever they were doing? ### George Sale And they who were esteemed weak shall say unto those who behaved with arrogance, nay, but the crafty plot which ye devised by night and by day, occasioned our ruin; when ye commanded us that we should not believe in God, and that we should set up other gods as equals unto him. And they shall conceal their repentance, after they shall have seen the punishment prepared for them. And we will put yokes on the necks of those who shall have disbelieved: Shall they be rewarded any otherwise than according to what they shall have wrought? ### Syed Vickar Ahamed Those who were the weak ones will say to the arrogant ones: "No! It was a (your) plot by day and by night: When, you (always) ordered us to be thankless to Allah and to find (others) equal with Him!" And they will say (their) repentance when they see the Penalty: And We shall put (stiff) clamps on the necks of the unbelievers: It would only be a repayment for their (ill) deeds. ### Amatul Rahman Omar And those who were suppressed and made weak (in the world) will say to those who considered themselves superior, `Nay, (We did not become guilty in our own right) rather it was due to your schemes (which you hatched) by day and night (that kept us away from guidance); for then you urged us to disbelieve in Allâh and set up equals with Him (to be worshipped). ' And they will not be able to conceal their remorse when they see the punishment; We shall put shackles round the necks of these disbelievers. They will be recompensed only according to their (actual) deeds. ### Ali Quli Qarai Those who were abased will say to those who were arrogant, ‘Rather [it was your] night and day plotting, when you prompted us to forswear Allah and to set up equals to Him. ’ They will hide their remorse when they sight the punishment, and We will put iron collars around the necks of the faithless. Shall they be requited except for what they used to do? ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü Zavallı tabiler, kibirli önderlerine dedi ki: "Hayır, gece ve gündüz hile ile bizi yanılttınız! Azabı gördüklerinde pişmanlıklarını saklarlar; biz de inkar edenlerin boyunlarına halkalar geçirdik. Onlar sadece yaptıklarının karşılığını görecekler. ### Diyanet İşleri — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Meali Zayıf ve güçsüz görülenler, büyüklük taslayanlara, "Hayır, bizi hidayetten saptıran gece ve gündüz kurduğunuz tuzaklardır. Çünkü siz bize Allah'ı inkar etmemizi ve O'na eşler koşmamızı emrediyordunuz" derler. Azabı görünce de içten içe pişmanlık duyarlar. Biz de inkar edenlerin boyunlarına demir halkalar geçiririz. Onlar ancak yapmakta olduklarının cezasını göreceklerdir. ### Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali O zebun edilenler de o büyüklük taslayanlara demektedir: hayır işiniz gece gündüz dolap, çünkü sizler bizlere hep Allaha küfretmemizi ve ona menendler koşmamızı emrediyordunuz ve böyle atışırlarken hepsi azabı gördükleri o demde içlerinden pişmanlık getirmektedirler, tomrukları geçirmişizdir de boyunlarına hep o küfredenlerin, sade yaptıklarının cezasını çekiyorlardır. ### Elmalılı (sadeleştirilmiş) O zayıf düşürülenler de büyüklük taslayanlara: "Hayır işiniz gece gündüz dolap (çevirmekti); çünkü sizler, bizlere hep Allah'a küfretmemizi ve ona eşler koşmamızı emrediyordunuz." derler ve böyle atışırlarken, azabı gördükleri zaman, içlerinden pişmanlık duymaktadırlar. Biz de o küfredenlerin boyunlarına tomrukları geçirmişizdir de yalnızca yaptıklarının cezasını çekiyorlardır. ### Gültekin Onan Za'fa uğatılanlar da büyüklük taslayanlara: "Hayır, siz gece ve gündüz hileli düzenler (kurup) bizim Tanrı'ya küfretmemizi ve O'na eşler koşmamızı bize buyuruyordunuz" dediler. Azabı gördüklerinde pişmanlıklarını saklarlar. Biz de küfredenlerin boyunlarına halkalar geçirdik. Onlar yaptıklarından başkasıyla mı cezalandırılacaklardı? ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Zaif tanıtanlar da o büyüklük taslayanlara: "Hayır, derler, gece gündüz (işiniz) hıylekarlıkdı. Çünkü siz bize Allaha küfretmemizi, Ona benzerler (ortaklar) tanımamızı emrediyordunuz". Bunlar azabı görünce (hepsi) peşimanlıklarını (derdlerini) içlerine atarlar. Biz de o küfredenlerin boyunlarına (ateş) tomrukları (nı) takarız. Yapmakda olduklarının başkasıyle mi cezalandırılacaklardı ya? ### İbni Kesir Güçsüz sayılanlar da, büyüklük taslayanlara dediler ki: Haydi, gece ve gündüzün (işiniz) hilekarlıktı. Hani siz, bizim Allah'a küfretmemizi ve O'na eşler koşmamızı emrediyordunuz. Azabı gördüklerinde ettiklerine içleri yandı. Ve küfretmiş olanların boyunlarına demir halkalar vurduk. Yapmakta olduklarından başkasıyla mı, cezalandırılacaklardı. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Ama güçsüzler, küstahça büyüklük taslayanlara: "Hayır!" diyecekler. "(Bizi ondan alıkoyan, sizin) gece gündüz (Allah'ın mesajlarına karşı) yanlış ve yanıltıcı itirazlar geliştirmenizdi; (tıpkı) Allah'ı tanımamaya ve O'na rakip güçler bulunduğuna bizi ikna ettiğiniz (gibi)!" diyeceklerdir. Ve onlar (kendilerini bekleyen) azabı görünce (derin) pişmanlıklarını ifade etmeye imkan bulamayacaklar; çünkü biz hakikati inkara şartlanmış olanların boyunlarına halkalar geçireceğiz.
