Surah Saba (Sheba) — سورة سَبَأ - **Verse:** 32 / 54 · **Juz:** 22 · **Mushaf page:** 431 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-saba/verse-32 ## Arabic قَالَ الَّذ۪ينَ اسْتَكْبَرُوا لِلَّذ۪ينَ اسْتُضْعِفُٓوا اَنَحْنُ صَدَدْنَاكُمْ عَنِ الْهُدٰى بَعْدَ اِذْ جَٓاءَكُمْ بَلْ كُنْتُمْ مُجْرِم۪ينَ ## Transcription Qala allatheena istakbaroolillatheena istudAAifoo anahnu sadadnakumAAani alhuda baAAda ith jaakum bal kuntummujrimeen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Those deemed great will say to those deemed weak, ‘Did we debar you from the guidance when it came to you? No, it is you who were evildoers. ’ ### Progressive Muslims Those who were mighty will say to those who were weak: "Did we turn you away from the guidance after it had come to you No, it was you who were criminal. " ### Shabbir Ahmed The leaders will say to the weak commoners, "Why - did we drive you away from the Guidance when it had come to you? Nay, it is you who were guilty (of blind following). In fact you were yourselves guilty." ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Those who were arrogant will say to those who were oppressed, "Did we avert you from guidance after it had come to you? Rather, you were criminals. " ### Muhammad Asad [And] those who were wont to glory in their arrogance will say unto those who had been weak: "Why - did we keep you [forcibly] from following the right path after it had become obvious to you? Nay, it was but you [yourselves] who were guilty!" ### Marmaduke Pickthall Those who were proud say unto those who were despised: Did we drive you away from the guidance after it had come unto you? Nay, but ye were guilty. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary The arrogant ones will retort to those who were suppressed: "What! Did we bar you from the guidance after it came to you? Not at all; rather you yourselves were evil-doers."[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, they will say: We had no power by which a few of us could have compelled hundreds of thousands of the people like you to follow us. If you had the will to believe, you could have deposed us from leadership and power and authority and government. In fact, you were our army, you were the source of our wealth and power. But for your offerings and gifts and taxes we should have been paupers. Had you not sworn allegiance to us, we could not have flourished as saints even for a day. Had you not appreciated and applauded us as leaders, we would have remained unknown. Had you not become our army and fought against the whole world for our sake, we could not have ruled over a single individual. Now why don’t you admit that you yourselves did not want to follow the way that the Messengers had presented before you. You were the slaves of your own lusts and desires, and the demands of your selves could not be fulfilled by the righteous way of life presented by the Messengers but by what we presented before you. You were heedless of the lawful and the unlawful and craved for the luxuries of life, which we only could provide you. You were in search of such guides as could give you the license to commit any sin, any crime, and take on themselves the responsibility to have you forgiven by God, in exchange for gifts. You wanted to listen to such religious scholars only who could please you by proving every kind of shirk and every innovation in religion and every lust of your self to be the very truth. You needed such forgers who could invent a new religion by altering the religion of God after your desires. You wanted to follow such leaders who could help you become prosperous in this world, no matter how you fared in the Hereafter. You wished to have such rulers who were immoral and dishonest so that under their patronage you also could have the freedom to indulge in any sin, any immorality. Thus, you and we were equal partners in the bargain. Now you cannot delude anyone by saying that you were absolutely innocent and that we had spoiled and corrupted you against your will. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Then the extravagant in their accounts of themselves say to those viewed with contempt: "Did we stand in your way and hinder you from accepting the spirit of truth which reached you to guide you into all truth?" "The fact is" they will add, "that you were people who grew daily more and more wicked". ### Bijan Moeinian The dominant ones will respond: "Did we force you to deny the guidance when it was represented to you? you yourself made the choice. " ### Al-Hilali & Khan And those who were arrogant will say to those who were deemed weak: "Did we keep you back from guidance after it had come to you? Nay, but you were Mujrimûn (polytheists, sinners, disbelievers, criminals)." ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali The arrogant ones will say to those who had been despised: "Was it we who kept you back from Guidance after it reached you? Nay, rather, it was ye who transgressed. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran The arrogant will respond to the lowly, "Did we ever hinder you from guidance after it came to you? In fact, you were wicked ˹on your own˺." ### Taqi Usmani Those who were overbearing will say to those weak, "Had we stopped you from (accepting) guidance after it came to you? Rather, you yourselves were guilty." ### Abdul Haleem The oppressors will say to them, ‘Was it we who prevented you from following right guidance after it had reached you? No! You yourselves were sinners.’ ### Arthur John Arberry Those that waxed proud will say to those that were abased, 'What, did we bar you from the guidance after it came to you? Aziz And those who disbelieve say, "By no means will we believe in this Quran, nor in that which is before it "Could you but see when the unjust shall be made to stand before their Lord, casting blame one another! Those who were reckoned weak (or despised) shall say to those who were proud, "Had it not been for you we would certainly have been believers. " ### Mahmoud Ghali (The ones) who waxed proud will say to (the ones) who were deemed weak, "Did we bar you from the guidance after it came to you? No indeed, (but) you were criminals. " ### George Sale They who behaved themselves arrogantly shall say unto those who were esteemed weak, did we turn you aside from the true direction, after it had come unto you? No! Instead, it was you were at fault. " ### Amatul Rahman Omar (Thereupon) those who considered themselves superior will say to those who had been suppressed and made weak (in the world), `Was it we who kept you away from (following) the guidance after it had come to you? No, this was not the case.
