They are, therefore, in a very muddled state. ### Progressive Muslims But they denied the truth when it came to them, so they are in a confused state. ### Shabbir Ahmed Nay, but they denied the Truth as soon as it came to them. They called the truth a lie when it came to them; so they are in a confused state. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) But they denied the truth when it came to them, so they are in a confused condition. ### Muhammad Asad Nay, but they [who refuse to believe in resurrection] have been wont to give the lie to this truth whenever it was proffered to them; and so they are in a state of confusion. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Nay, but they have denied the truth when it came unto them, therefor they are now in troubled case. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary They gave the lie to the Truth when it came to them. So they are now in a state of great perplexity.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] In this brief sentence a vast subject has been compressed. It means: These people did not rest content only with expressing wonder and declaring the thing to be far removed from reason, but when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) presented his message of the truth, they denied it as falsehood without any hesitation. Its inevitable result was, and the same only could follow from it, that they do not agree on any one position with regard to the invitation and the Messenger who has presented it. Sometimes they brand him a poet, sometimes a sorcerer, and sometimes a madman. Sometimes they say that he is a magician and sometimes that he is bewitched. Sometimes they say that he has fabricated this thing by himself in order to establish his superiority. Therefore, leaving it aside, detailed reasoning is now being presented about the authenticity of the second thing which those people regarded as strange and far removed from reason and intellect. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Yet the infidels denied the truth when it was presented to them and treated the Messenger as one who passes himself as someone other than he is, as if they were involved in doubt and anxiety about a matter on account of its intricate character. ### Bijan Moeinian What a shame that the disbelievers reject a truth, revealed to them, out of sheer ignorance. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Nay, but they have denied the truth (this Qur’ân) when it has come to them, so they are in a confused state (cannot differentiate between right and wrong). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali But they deny the Truth when it comes to them: so they are in a confused state. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran In fact, they reject the truth when it has come to them, so they are in a confused state.[1] ### Taqi Usmani Rather, they rejected the truth when it came to them; so they are in a confused state. ### Abdul Haleem But the disbelievers deny the truth when it comes to them; they are in a state of confusion. ### Arthur John Arberry Nay, but they cried lies to the truth when it came to them, and so they are in a case confused. ### E.
