Surah Muhammad (Muhammad) — سورة محمد - **Verse:** 28 / 38 · **Juz:** 26 · **Mushaf page:** 508 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-muhammad/verse-28 ## Arabic ذٰلِكَ بِاَنَّهُمُ اتَّبَعُوا مَٓا اَسْخَطَ اللّٰهَ وَكَرِهُوا رِضْوَانَهُ فَاَحْبَطَ اَعْمَالَهُمْ۟ ## Transcription Thalika bi-annahumu ittabaAAoo maaskhata Allaha wakarihoo ridwanahufaahbata aAAmalahum ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley That is because they followed what angers Allah and hated what is pleasing to Him. So He made their actions come to nothing. ### Progressive Muslims That is because they followed that which angered God, and they hated that which pleased Him. Thus, He nullified their works. ### Shabbir Ahmed This, because they followed that which brings Allah's disapproval, and detested the actions that win His Approval. And so, He renders all their actions fruitless. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation For it is that they followed what angered God and were averse to His approval! So He made vain their deeds. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation That is because they followed that which angered God, and they hated that which pleased Him. Thus, He nullified their works. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament This is because they followed what angered GOD and hated the things that please Him. Consequently, He has nullified their works. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Because they followed what displeases God, and they were averse to pleasing Him. So We nullified their deeds. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) That is because they followed what angered Allah and disliked [what earns] His pleasure, so He rendered worthless their deeds. ### Muhammad Asad This, because they were wont to pursue what God con­demns and to hate [whatever would meet with] His goodly acceptance: and so He has caused all their [good] deeds to come to nought. ### Marmaduke Pickthall That will be because they followed that which angereth Allah, and hated that which pleaseth Him. Therefor He hath made their actions vain. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary That is because they have followed a way that angered Allah, and have been averse to His good pleasure. So He reduced all their works to nought.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] This refers to all those works that they performed as Muslims. Their Prayers, their Fasting, their payments of the Zakat, and all other acts of worship and virtue, which in appearance and form are counted among good works, were rendered void, for they failed to adopt the attitude of sincerity and loyalty towards Allah and Islam and the Muslim community, even though they professed to be Muslims. But, on the contrary, they went on conspiring with the enemies of Islam for the sake of small worldly gains, and started devising schemes to save themselves from any possible risks as soon as time came for Jihad in the cause of Allah. These verses are absolutely decisive and conclusive in this regard that in the conflict between Islam and un-Islam the faith of the person whose sympathies are not with Islam and the Muslims, or are with disbelief and the disbelievers, cannot at all be reliable, not to speak of any of his works being acceptable before Allah. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab So be it, because they practiced the vices incidental to paganism and hypocrisy: disobedience, intrigues and vices which Allah detests and has forbidden. They allied themselves to the enemies of Allah and His Messenger and bore malice to every propitious action that pleases Allah and so He Imprinted their deeds with irreverence, profanity and damnation. ### Bijan Moeinian That is because, they turned away from the things that pleases God and adapted a way of life that made God angry at them. All their deeds therefore turned fruitless. ### Al-Hilali & Khan That is because they followed that which angered Allâh and hated that which pleased Him. So He made their deeds fruitless. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali This because they followed that which called forth the Wrath of Allah, and they hated Allah's good pleasure; so He made their deeds of no effect. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran This is because they follow whatever displeases Allah and hate whatever pleases Him, so He has rendered their deeds void. ### Taqi Usmani That is because they followed that which has angered Allah, and they disliked His pleasure; therefore He has nullified their deeds. ### Abdul Haleem because they practised things that incurred God’s wrath, and disdained to please Him? He makes their deeds go to waste. ### Arthur John Arberry That is because they have followed what angers God, and have been averse to His good pleasure, so He has made their works to fail. ### E. Henry Palmer This is because they follow what angers God and are averse from His goodwill; and their works are void. ### Hamid S. Aziz That is because they follow what is displeasing to Allah and are averse to His pleasure, therefore, He has made null their deeds. ### Mahmoud Ghali That is for that they have closely followed what causes wrath from Allah and hated His all-blessed Satisfaction; so He frustrated their deeds. ### George Sale This shall they suffer, because they follow that which provoketh God to wrath, and are averse to what is well pleasing unto Him: And He will render their works vain. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed That is because they acted upon that which brought about the Anger of Allah, and they hated Allah’s good pleasure, so He made their deeds of no effect. ### Amatul Rahman Omar (They will be treated) thus, because they followed that which called forth the displeasure of Allâh and were averse to (seeking) His good pleasure. That is why He will make their deeds fruitless. ### Ali Quli Qarai That, because they pursued what displeased Allah, and loathed His pleasure.
