Surah Muhammad (Muhammad) — سورة محمد - **Verse:** 18 / 38 · **Juz:** 26 · **Mushaf page:** 507 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-muhammad/verse-18 ## Arabic فَهَلْ يَنْظُرُونَ اِلَّا السَّاعَةَ اَنْ تَأْتِيَهُمْ بَغْتَةًۚ فَقَدْ جَٓاءَ اَشْرَاطُهَاۚ فَاَنّٰى لَهُمْ اِذَا جَٓاءَتْهُمْ ذِكْرٰيهُمْ ## Transcription Fahal yanthuroona illaassaAAata an ta/tiyahum baghtatan faqad jaaashratuha faanna lahum itha jaat-humthikrahum ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley What are they awaiting but for the Hour to come upon them suddenly? Its Signs have already come. What good will their Reminder be to them when it does arrive? ### Progressive Muslims So are they waiting until the Hour comes to them suddenly For its conditions have already been met. But once it comes to them, how will they benefit from their message ### Shabbir Ahmed Are they, then, waiting for the Hour that may come upon them suddenly? And the signs of confrontation have already appeared. But already there have come [some of] its indications. Then what good to them, when it has come, will be their remembrance? ### Muhammad Asad Are, then, they [whose hearts are sealed] wait­ing for the Last Hour - [waiting] that it come upon them of a sudden? But it has already been foretold! And what will their remembrance [of their past sins] avail them, once it has come upon them? ### Marmaduke Pickthall Await they aught save the Hour, that it should come upon them unawares? And the beginnings thereof have already come. But how, when it hath come upon them, can they take their warning? ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Are they waiting, then, for anything else than the Last Hour to suddenly come upon them?[1] Already some of its tokens have come.[2] But when it does actually come upon them, where will any time be left for them to take heed? _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, as far as the explanation and clarification of the truth is concerned; it has been explained well by argument and reasoning, the miraculous discourses of the Quran, the pure character of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the revolution in the lives of his companions. Now, are these people awaiting that Resurrection itself should take place and then only they will believe? - [2] The portents of Resurrection imply those signs which indicate that its approach is near. One such important sign is the advent of God’s last Prophet after whom no other prophet will come till Resurrection. Traditions have been related in Bukhari, Muslim. Tirmidhi and Musnad Ahmad on the authority of Anas, Sahl bin Saad As-Saidi and Buraidah, saying that the Prophet (peace be upon him) raised his index finger and the middle finger and said: My advent and Resurrection are like these two fingers. That is, Just as there is no other finger between these two fingers, so no other prophet will be raised between me and Resurrection; after me only Resurrection now will occur. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Do they (The infidel Meccans together with the hypocrites) intend to remain in their state of disbelief until they suddenly face the foreordained Hour? But its shadows have been cast and its preceding signs have come into peoples' knowledge; and so where can they turn and what can profit them when it comes upon them? ### Bijan Moeinian Are they waiting till their resurrection [when they will have no time to repent]? They are only one step away from it. When they are resurrected, what chance will they find to listen and take advantage of the God’s message? ### Al-Hilali & Khan Do they then await (anything) other than the Hour, that it should come upon them suddenly?
