Surah Ibrahim (Abraham) — سورة ابراهيم - **Verse:** 18 / 52 · **Juz:** 13 · **Mushaf page:** 256 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ibrahim/verse-18 ## Arabic مَثَلُ الَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُوا بِرَبِّهِمْ اَعْمَالُهُمْ كَرَمَادٍۨ اشْتَدَّتْ بِهِ الرّ۪يحُ ف۪ي يَوْمٍ عَاصِفٍۜ لَا يَقْدِرُونَ مِمَّا كَسَبُوا عَلٰى شَيْءٍۜ ذٰلِكَ هُوَ الضَّلَالُ الْبَع۪يدُ ## Transcription Mathalu allatheena kafaroo birabbihimaAAmaluhum karamadin ishtaddat bihi arreehufee yawmin AAasifin la yaqdiroona mimmakasaboo AAala shay-in thalika huwa addalalualbaAAeed ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley The metaphor of those who reject their Lord is that their actions are like ashes scattered by strong winds on a stormy day. They have no power at all over anything they have earned. That is extreme misguidance. ### Progressive Muslims The example of those who reject their Lord is that their works are like ashes, on which the wind blows strongly on a stormy day, they cannot get anything of what they earned. Such is the farthest misguidance. ### Shabbir Ahmed Here is a similitude. The works of those who live rejecting the Permanent Values of their Lord are like ashes that the wind blows away on a stormy day. They gain naught for their deeds (13:17). That is the outcome of following trails that lead nowhere (14:24-26). ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation The likeness of those who deny their Lord: their works are as ashes the wind scatters on a day of tempest; they possess nothing of what they earned — that is the extreme error. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation Theexample of those who reject their Lord is that their works are like ashes, upon which the wind blows strongly on a stormy day, they cannot get anything of what they earned. Such is the farthest misguidance. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament The allegory of those who disbelieve in their Lord: their works are like ashes in a violent wind, on a stormy day. They gain nothing from whatever they earn; such is the farthest straying. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Like ashes are the deeds of those who deny their Lord, which the wind blows away on a windy day. They shall have no power over what they earned. This is the farthest limit of going astray. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) The example of those who disbelieve in their Lord is [that] their deeds are like ashes which the wind blows forcefully on a stormy day; they are unable [to keep] from what they earned a [single] thing. That is what is extreme error. ### Muhammad Asad [This, then, is] the parable of those who are bent on denying their Sustainer: all their works are as ashes which the wind blows about fiercely on a stormy day: [in the life to come,] they cannot achieve any benefit whatever from all [the good] that they may have wrought: for this [denial of God] is indeed the farthest one can go astray. ### Marmaduke Pickthall A similitude of those who disbelieve in their Lord: Their works are as ashes which the wind bloweth hard upon a stormy day. They have no control of aught that they have earned. That is the extreme failure. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary This is the example of those who disbelieve in their Lord: their works are like ashes upon which the wind blows fiercely on a tempestuous day. They shall find no reward for their deeds.[1] That indeed is the farthest point in straying. _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, those who were perfidious, faithless, and disobedient to the divine message, and refused to adopt that way to which the Messengers invited, will find in the end that all the deeds and earnings of their lives were as worthless as a heap of ashes. Just as each and every particle of a high mound of ashes formed during a long course of years is scattered by the wind on a stormy day, likewise all their grand works will prove on the stormy doomsday to be no more than a mound of ashes. Their dazzling culture, their grand civilization, their wonderful kingdoms and states, their magnificent universities, their sciences and their literatures, nay, even their hypocritical worship, and so called virtuous deeds, their charitable and reformative works of which they were very proud in the worldly life, shall prove to be as worthless as a heap of ashes, and will be scattered by the storm of the Day of Resurrection. So much so that there shall not remain a single particle of their works worthy of being placed in the divine scale on that Day in their favor. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Those infidels, who deny Allah, whose physical and mental efforts are not intimately mixed with the spiritual apprehension of divine truths were born to be losers. Their efforts are useless and stand similitude exact of ashes which are exposed to violent high winds scattering them in all directions. They are unable to advantage themselves of what they have accomplished, and this is perversion in the extreme. ### Bijan Moeinian The disbelievers’ good deeds will not benefit them (as it is the truth that has to remain and the falsehood, with all its beneficial side effect has to vanish. ) Their works will disappear the same way that the ashes disappear by a strong wind in a stormy day. Such is the case of one who goes far from the boundaries set by God. ### Al-Hilali & Khan The parable of those who disbelieved in their Lord is that their works are as ashes, on which the wind blows furiously on a stormy day; they shall not be able to get aught of what they have earned. That is the straying, far away (from the Right Path). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali The parable of those who reject their Lord is that their works are as ashes, on which the wind blows furiously on a tempestuous day: No power have they over aught that they have earned: that is the straying far, far (from the goal). ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran The parable of the deeds of those who disbelieve in their Lord is that of ashes fiercely blown away by wind on a stormy day. They will gain nothing from what they have earned. That is ˹truly˺ the farthest one can stray. ### Taqi Usmani The deeds of those who refuse to believe in their Lord are like ashes blown away by the wind on a stormy day. They will not be able to gain anything out of what they did. That is the farthest point of straying away from the right path. ### Abdul Haleem The deeds of those who reject their Lord are like ashes that the wind blows furiously on a stormy day: they have no power over anything they have gained. This is to stray far, far away. ### Arthur John Arberry The likeness of those who disbelieve in their Lord: their works are as ashes, whereon the wind blows strong upon a tempestuous day; they have no power over that they have earned - that is the far error! ### E. Henry Palmer The likeness of those who disbelieve on their Lord, - their works are as ashes whereon the wind blows fiercely on a stormy day. They have no power at all over that which they have earned.' That is the remote error! ### Hamid S. Aziz This is the likeness (parable, similitude) of those who disbelieve in their Lord - their works are as ashes whereon the wind blows fiercely on a stormy day. They have no control of aught that they have earned - That is the extreme failure (or far straying). ### Mahmoud Ghali (Such) is the likeness of the ones who have disbelieved in their Lord: their deeds are like ashes on which the wind blows severely upon a tempestuous day; they are unable (to do) anything with whatever they have earned. That is the far error itself. ### George Sale This is the likeness of those who believe not in their Lord. Their works are as ashes, which the wind violently scattereth in a stormy day: They shall not be able to obtain any solid advantage from that which they have wrought. This is an error most distant from truth. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed The parable of those who reject their Lord is that their works are like ashes, on which the wind blows strongly on a windy day: They have no power over (even the) little bit of what they have earned: That is the wandering far, far (from the goal). ### Amatul Rahman Omar The works of those who disbelieve in (the Messages and blessings of) their Lord, are like ashes on which the wind blows violently on a tempestuous day. They shall have no power to reap the fruit of their deeds. That is indeed an extremely ruinous error. ### Ali Quli Qarai A parable of those who defy their Lord: their deeds are like ashes over which the wind blows hard on a tempestuous day: they have no power over anything they have earned.
