Surah Hud (Hud) — سورة هود - **Verse:** 46 / 123 · **Juz:** 12 · **Mushaf page:** 226 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-hud/verse-46 ## Arabic قَالَ يَا نُوحُ اِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ اَهْلِكَۚ اِنَّهُ عَمَلٌ غَيْرُ صَالِحٍۗ فَلَا تَسْـَٔلْنِ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِه۪ عِلْمٌۜ اِنّ۪ٓي اَعِظُكَ اَنْ تَكُونَ مِنَ الْجَاهِل۪ينَ ## Transcription Qala ya noohu innahulaysa min ahlika innahu AAamalun ghayru salihin falatas-alni ma laysa laka bihi AAilmun innee aAAithukaan takoona mina aljahileen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley He said, ‘Nuh, he is definitely not of your family. He is someone whose action was not righteous. Do not, therefore, ask Me for something about which you have no knowledge. I admonish you lest you should be among the ignorant.’ ### Progressive Muslims He said: "O Noah, he is not from your family, he was fathered illicitly, so do not ask what you have no knowledge of. I advise you not to be of the ignorant." ### Shabbir Ahmed His Lord said, "O Noah! Your son was not of your family. His conduct was not righteous. You were not aware of the Divine Criterion of relationships which are based on Ideology and not on lineage otherwise you wouldn't have asked such a question. Indeed, I advise you, lest you be among the ignorant." ### Muhammad Asad [God] answered: "O Noah, behold, he was not of thy family, for, verily, he was unrighteous in his conduct. And thou shalt not ask of Me anything whereof thou canst not have any knowledge: thus, behold, do I admonish thee lest thou become one of those who are unaware [of what is right]." ### Marmaduke Pickthall He said: O Noah! Lo! he is not of thy household; lo! he is of evil conduct, so ask not of Me that whereof thou hast no knowledge. I admonish thee lest thou be among the ignorant. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary In response Noah was told: 'Most certainly he is not of your family; verily he is of unrighteous conduct.[1] So do not ask of Me for that concerning which you have no knowledge. I admonish you never to act like the ignorant ones.[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] Allah has called the wicked son of Prophet Noah (peace be upon him), as "His conduct was other than righteous", for children are entrusted by the Creator to the care of parents so that they may bring them up and train them to become good persons, and fulfill the purpose for which He created man. If a father does his very best to process and turn the child into a righteous person, but fails in his efforts, the child, who was a sort of raw material in his hands, would be likened to a worthless act. It is obvious that the wicked son was a worthless act, for he was not the sort of good work which his father had desired him to be. So in this sense he did not belong to the family of Prophet Noah (peace be upon him), whom the Creator had sent to mold all his people into good acts, especially those who were of his own flesh and blood. Thus that unrighteous son had forfeited all the rights of blood he had with the Prophet as far as the torment of the deluge was concerned. - [2] Now let us consider the other question: Why was not the request of the Prophet regarding his own flesh and blood granted? The answer is this: If any part of the body of a man becomes so rotten that the surgeon is of the definite opinion that that part must be cut off for the sake of the safety of the rest of the body, the surgeon will not comply with the request of the man not to cut that part of his body, but will say: It is not a part of your body because it is rotten. This will not, however, mean that it was never actually a part of the body but will imply only this: As it has ceased to function rightly as a part of the body, it is no more a part of the body in the sense and for the purpose the healthy parts of the body are its parts. Likewise, when it was said to Prophet Noah (peace be upon him): He is not of your family, it did not negate the fact that he was from his loins but implied: He does not deserve to be treated as a member of your righteous family because of his spoiled morals and conduct. As the torment of the deluge has been brought about to punish those who had sided with the unbelievers in the conflict of kufr and faith, your son does not deserve to be rescued from it along with the believers. Had it been a conflict between your descendants and those of the unbelievers, the result would have been different, but this being a conflict between the righteous and the unrighteous, the former alone will be delivered from it. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab "He is not a part of your family", said Allah; piety was not an, attribute of your son. Your plea on behalf of your son is not an act of wisdom and piety, therefore, do not invoke Me for something whose consequence you do not know. I exhort you not to be one of those in want of intellect and spiritual knowledge." ### Bijan Moeinian I said: "Noah, he is not a member of your family as he [is carrying the wrong genes and consequently) is doing nothing but wrong. Therefore, do not ask for something that you have any knowledge about it. Do not behave like ignorant people (who think the criminals are human beings and should not be destroyed.)" ### Al-Hilali & Khan He said: "O Nûh (Noah)! Surely, he is not of your family; verily, his work is unrighteous, so ask not of Me that of which you have no knowledge! Surely I admonish you that you should not be among the ignorant." ### George Sale God answered, O Noah, verily he is not of thy family: This intercession of thine for him, is not a righteous work. He (your son) is not of your family: Surely, his conduct is not righteous. So do not ask from Me, that about which you have no knowledge! Çünkü o (nun işlediği) Saalih olmayan (kötü) bir işdir. O halde bilgin olmadığı bir şey'i benden isteme. Seni bilmezlerden olmakdan bihakkın men ederim". ### İbni Kesir Buyurdu ki: Ey Nuh; o senin ailenden değildir. Çünkü kötü bir iş işlemiştir. Öyleyse bilmediğin şeyi Benden isteme.
