Surah Hud (Hud) — سورة هود - **Verse:** 20 / 123 · **Juz:** 12 · **Mushaf page:** 223 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-hud/verse-20 ## Arabic اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ لَمْ يَكُونُوا مُعْجِز۪ينَ فِي الْاَرْضِ وَمَا كَانَ لَهُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللّٰهِ مِنْ اَوْلِيَٓاءَۢ يُضَاعَفُ لَهُمُ الْعَذَابُۜ مَا كَانُوا يَسْتَط۪يعُونَ السَّمْعَ وَمَا كَانُوا يُبْصِرُونَ ## Transcription Ola-ika lam yakoonoo muAAjizeena feeal-ardi wama kana lahum min dooni Allahimin awliyaa yudaAAafu lahumu alAAathabu makanoo yastateeAAoona assamAAa wama kanooyubsiroon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley They were not able to thwart Allah on earth, and had no protectors besides Allah. The punishment will be doubled for them. They were unable to hear and could not see. ### Progressive Muslims These are the ones who will not escape on Earth, nor do they have besides God any allies. The retribution will be doubled for them. They were not able to hear, nor could they see. ### Shabbir Ahmed They cannot escape Allah's Law of Requital even if they run to and fro in the earth, unscathed. Never will they find anyone to protect them from Allah. Double suffering will be imposed on them since they could not bear to hear the Truth nor could see it. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation Those will not escape in the earth, and they have not, besides God, any allies. Doubled for them is the punishment; they could not hear, neither did they see; ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation These are the ones who will not escape on the earth, nor do they have besides God any allies. Retribution will be doubled for them. They have failed to hear, and they have failed to see. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira They shall not weaken (the power of) God on earth, nor find any other protector but God. Their punishment will be doubled, for they could neither hear nor see. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Those were not causing failure [to Allah ] on earth, nor did they have besides Allah any protectors. For them the punishment will be multiplied. They were not able to hear, nor did they see. ### Muhammad Asad Never can they elude [their final reckoning, even if they remain unscathed] on earth: never will they find anyone who could protect them from God. [In the life to come] double suffering will be imposed on them for having lost the ability to hear [the truth] and having failed to see [it]. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Such will not escape in the earth, nor have they any protecting friends beside Allah. For them the torment will be double. They could not bear to hear, and they used not to see. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary They had no power to frustrate Allah's design in the earth,[1] nor did they have any protectors against Allah. Their chastisement will be doubled.[2] They were unable to hear, nor could they see. _Footnotes_ - [1] This, again, refers to what will happen in the next life. - [2] They will suffer punishment for being in error and for misleading others and leaving behind a legacy of error and misguidance for coming generations. (Surah Al-Araf, E.N. 30). ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab These infidels and such persons are not in a position ever to overpower Allah nor escape-His retributive punishment. Nor do they have besides Him tutelary protectors to defend them. Their punishment shall be doubled in the train of their obstinacy against divine laws, their adherence to their opinions with their usual struggle to assert falsehood and obstruct the way to Allah's path of righteousness and of their persistence in closing their hearts' ears and their minds' eyes to Allah's discourse. ### Bijan Moeinian The unjust people will fail to overcome the Lord on the earth and will find that there is none to protect them from the Lord in the Hereafter. Their punishment will be doubled for the simple reason that they failed to hear and to see. ### Al-Hilali & Khan By no means will they escape (from Allâh’s Torment) on earth, nor have they protectors besides Allâh! Their torment will be doubled! They could not bear to hear (the preachers of the truth) and they used not to see (the truth because of their severe aversion, in spite of the fact that they had the sense of hearing and sight). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali They will in no wise frustrate (His design) on earth, nor have they protectors besides Allah! Their penalty will be doubled! They lost the power to hear, and they did not see! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran They will never frustrate Allah on earth, and they will have no protector besides Allah. Their punishment will be multiplied, for they failed to hear or see ˹the truth˺. ### Taqi Usmani They were unable to frustrate (Allah’s plan) on the earth, and they had no supporters besides Allah. Punishment will be doubled for them. They were not able to hear, nor would they see. ### Abdul Haleem They will not escape on earth, and there will be no one other than God to protect them. Their punishment will be doubled. They could not hear, and they did not see. ### Arthur John Arberry they are unable to frustrate Him on earth and they have no protectors, apart from God. For them the chastisement shall be doubled; they could not hear, neither did they see. ### E. Henry Palmer They cannot make Him helpless in the earth, nor have they other than God for patrons. Doubled for them is the torment. They could not hear, nor did they see! ### Hamid S. Onlara azap katlanacaktır. Onlar hem işitmeye tahammül edemiyorlardı hem de görmüyorlardı. ### Gültekin Onan Bunlar, yeryüzünde (Tanrı'yı) aciz bırakacak değildir ve bunların Tanrı'dan başka velileri yoktur. Azab onlar için kat kat arttırılır. Bunlar (hakkı) işitmeye güç yetirmezlerdi ve görmezlerdi de. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Onlar yer yüzünde (Allahı) aciz bırakabilecek değillerdir. Kendilerini Allahdan (kurtaracak) hiç bir haamileri de yokdur. Onların azabı kat kat olacakdır. (Çünkü) onlar (hakkı) işitmiye tehammül edemezlerdi, (onu) görmezlerdi de. ### İbni Kesir Bunlar, yeryüzünde aciz bırakacak olanlar değillerdir. Allah'a karşı duracak yardımcıları da yoktur. Onların azabı kat kat olacaktır. Onlar, işitmeye tahammül edemez ve göremezlerdi de. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Böyleleri, yeryüzünde (yaptıkları yanlarına kalsa bile, nihai hesaptan) yakalarını kurtaramayacak, kendilerini Allaha karşı koruyacak bir dost da bulamayacaklar. (Hakkı) işitme yetilerini kullanmadıklarından ve görmek, fark etmek istemediklerinden ötürü (öte dünyada) azap kat kat artırılacaktır onlar için. ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Bunlar, yeryüzünde aciz bırakacak değillerdir.
