Surah Hud (Hud) — سورة هود - **Verse:** 116 / 123 · **Juz:** 12 · **Mushaf page:** 233 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-hud/verse-116 ## Arabic فَلَوْلَا كَانَ مِنَ الْقُرُونِ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ اُو۬لُوا بَقِيَّةٍ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْفَسَادِ فِي الْاَرْضِ اِلَّا قَل۪يلاً مِمَّنْ اَنْجَيْنَا مِنْهُمْۚ وَاتَّبَعَ الَّذ۪ينَ ظَلَمُوا مَٓا اُتْرِفُوا ف۪يهِ وَكَانُوا مُجْرِم۪ينَ ## Transcription Falawla kana mina alquroonimin qablikum oloo baqiyyatin yanhawna AAani alfasadi feeal-ardi illa qaleelan mimman anjayna minhumwattabaAAa allatheena thalamoo maotrifoo feehi wakanoo mujrimeen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Would that there had been more people with a vestige of good among the generations of those who came before you, who forbade corruption in the earth, other than the few among them whom We saved. Those who did wrong gladly pursued the life of luxury that they were given and were evildoers. ### Progressive Muslims If only there was from the previous generations a people with wisdom who deterred from the corruption on Earth, except the few that We saved of them. And those who were wicked followed the enjoyment they were in, and they were criminal. ### Shabbir Ahmed (Here is a lesson for the future of humanity. ) Alas, among the older generations there were few people of virtue, those who would take a stand against corruption and disorder in the land. The wrong-doers followed that by which they were made sapless, and were guilty. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Why were there not, out of the generations that passed away before you, righteous men who would forbid others from causing corruption on the earth? And if such were there, they were only a few whom We had saved from those generations, or else the wrong-doers kept pursuing the ease and comfort which had been conferred upon them, thus losing themselves in sinfulness. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab If only there had been among the preceding generations a class of persons virtuous, strong and influential enough to warn people against corruption and to forbid mischief on earth and prohibit perversion as did the few of them whom We saved. But the wrongful of actions pursued pleasure, and lust after the mundane vanity they were entangled with, and were steeped in crime. ### Bijan Moeinian What a shame that in the past there were not good people who would forbid the people of making mischief. If there were any, there were very few who were saved from [the punishment imposed upon] those nations. As for the wrong-doers, they were absorbed with their materialistic pre-occupations and ended up as criminals. ### Al-Hilali & Khan If only there had been among the generations before you persons having wisdom, prohibiting (others) from Al-Fasâd (disbelief, polytheism, and all kinds of crimes and sins) in the earth, (but there were none) - except a few of those whom We saved from among them! Zulmedenler ise içinde şımartıldıkları refahın ardına düştüler ve günahkar kimseler oldular. ### Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Şimdi sizden evvelki karnlardan bakıyye sahipleri Yer yüzünde fesaddan nehyeder olsalardı; lakin onlardan necata irdirdiğimiz pek az kimselerden başka yok, o zulmetmekte bulunanlar ise şımartıldıkları refahın ardına düştüler ve hep mücrim oldular ### Elmalılı (sadeleştirilmiş) Şimdi sizden önceki devirlerden yeryüzünde bozgunculuğu yasaklayan faziletli kimseler bulunmalıydı. Onlar, suçlu günahkarlardı. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Sizden önceki devirlerde (insanları) yer yüzünde fesad (çıkarmak) dan vaz geçirmiye çalışacak (bu suretle onları helakden kurtaracak) fazilet saahibleri bulunmalı değil miydi? (O devirlerin insanları) içinden (vazifelerini yapdıkları için) kurtardığımız (kimseler) ancak (pek) azdır. Zaalim olanlar ise yalınız kendilerine verilen (dünyevi) refahın ardına düşdüler, günahkar insanlardı onlar. ### İbni Kesir Sizden önceki nesillerin ileri gelenleri yeryüzünde bozgunculuğa engel olmalı değil miydiler? Onlardan kurtardıklarımız pek azdır. Zalim olanlar ise yalnız kendilerine verilen refahın ardına düştüler. Suçlu kimselerdi onlar. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Fakat, ne yazık ki, (yok ettiğimiz) sizden önceki kuşaklar arasından, yeryüzünde yozlaşmaya karşı çıkan -(doğru yolu izledikleri için) kendilerini kurtardığımız küçük toplulukların dışında- akıl / iz'an ve erdem sahibi kimseler çıkmadı. Ve zulme eğilim gösteren çoğunluk yalnızca kendilerini yozlaştıran hazların peşine düşüp günaha gömülüp gittiler. ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Sizden önceki devirlerde yeryüzünde fesattan vazgeçirmeye çalışacak fazilet sahipleri bulunmalı değil miydi? Onlardan sadece çok azını kurtardık. Fakat zalimler kendilerine verilen nimetlerle azdılar. Günahkar oldular. ### Süleyman Ateş — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Sizden önceki nesillerden akıllı kimselerin, yeryüzünde bozgunculuk yapmaktan men'etmeleri gerekmez miydi? Fakat onlar arasından, ancak kendilerini kurtardığımız pek az kişi böyle yaptı.
