Surah Ghafir (The Forgiver) — سورة غافر - **Verse:** 56 / 85 · **Juz:** 24 · **Mushaf page:** 472 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ghafir/verse-56 ## Arabic اِنَّ الَّذ۪ينَ يُجَادِلُونَ ف۪ٓي اٰيَاتِ اللّٰهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَانٍ اَتٰيهُمْۙ اِنْ ف۪ي صُدُورِهِمْ اِلَّا كِبْرٌ مَا هُمْ بِبَالِغ۪يهِۚ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّٰهِۜ اِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّم۪يعُ الْبَص۪يرُ ## Transcription Inna allatheena yujadiloonafee ayati Allahi bighayri sultanin atahumin fee sudoorihim illa kibrun ma hum bibaligheehifastaAAith billahi innahu huwa assameeAAualbaseer ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Certainly those who argue about the Signs of Allah without any authority having come to them have nothing in their breasts except for pride which they will never be able to vindicate. Therefore seek refuge with Allah. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. ### Progressive Muslims Surely, those who dispute about God's revelations without any authority given to them, there is nothing but arrogance in their chests, which they do not perceive. Therefore, seek refuge in God; He is the Hearer, the Seer. ### Shabbir Ahmed They contest the Messages of Allah without possible authoritative evidence, since they have nothing but false pride in their hearts. By self-glorification none shall attain dignity. (7:146), (40:35). Dispel their designs by seeking refuge in Allah's Laws. Behold, He, only He, is the Hearer, the Seer. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation Those who dispute concerning the proofs of God without an authority having come to them — in their breasts is only greatness they will never reach. So seek thou refuge in God; He is the Hearer, the Seeing. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation Surely, those who dispute about the revelations of God without any authority given to them, there is nothing except arrogance in their chests, which they do not perceive. Therefore, seek refuge with God; He is the Hearer, the Seer. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament Surely, those who argue against GOD's revelations without proof are exposing the arrogance that is hidden inside their chests, and they are not even aware of it. Therefore, seek refuge in GOD; He is the Hearer, the Seer. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Verily those who argue in the matter of God's revelations, without authority having reached them, have nothing but pride in their hearts, and they will not achieve their end. So take refuge in God: Surely He is all-hearing and all-seeing. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Indeed, those who dispute concerning the signs of Allah without [any] authority having come to them - there is not within their breasts except pride, [the extent of] which they cannot reach. So seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Seeing. ### Muhammad Asad Behold, as for those who call God’s messages in question without having any evidence therefore in their hearts is nothing but overweening self-con­ceit, which they will never be able to satisfy: seek thou, then, refuge with God - for, verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-seeing! ### Marmaduke Pickthall Lo! those who wrangle concerning the revelations of Allah without a warrant having come unto them, there is naught else in their breasts save pride which they will never attain. So take thou refuge in Allah. Lo! He, only He, is the Hearer, the Seer. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Verily those who dispute regarding the Signs of Allah without any evidence that might have come to them, nothing but vain pride fills their hearts. Yet they shall never be able to satisfy the pride[1] with which they are puffed up.[2] So seek refuge with Allah.[3] Verily He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, the real cause for their opposition without any argument and their irrational crooked argumentation is not that they do not understand the thruth and the themes of goodness and reform being presented before them in the form of the revelations of Allah; therefore, they dispute about them in good faith in order to understand them. But the actual reason for their wrong attitude is that their selfconceit does not permit any tolerance. They do not want that in Arabia the guidance and leadership of Muhammad (peace be upon him) should be accepted and acknowledged. And ultimately one day they themselves should have to accept the leadership of the person against whom they think they have a greater right to be the chiefs and leaders. That is why they are straining every nerve not to let Muhammad (peace be upon him) have his way, and they do not hesitate to use any mean device whatsoever for the purpose. - [2] In other words it means: He whom Allah has made great, will remain great, and the efforts of the small people who are trying to establish their superiority will ultimately end in failure. - [3] That is, just as Moses (peace be upon him) had become free from fear and anxiety after invoking Allah Almighty’s help and refuge against Pharaoh’s threats, so should you also seek His help and refuge against the threats and conspiracies of the chiefs of the Quraish, then should busy yourself in raising His word being free from every anxiety. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Those who contend with opposing arguments against Allah's signs and seem resolved to dispute the truth of His revelations without being endowed with authority, simply vent their feelings overflowing with the sense of pride and inordinate self-esteem but attaining no end. Therefore, commit yourself O Muhammad, to Allah counter to their falsehood. He is AL-Sami’ (with unlimited audition), and AL-Bassir (the vigilant who sees all things), ### Bijan Moeinian Those argumentative people who challenge the word of God without any knowledge are sick of arrogance (without even knowing it) and will fail. Seek refuge in God as He hears everything and sees everything. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Verily those who dispute about the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh, without any authority having come to them, there is nothing else in their breasts except pride [to accept you (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) as a Messenger of Allâh and to obey you][1]. They will never have it (i.e. Prophethood which Allâh has bestowed upon you). So seek refuge in Allâh (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم from the arrogants). Verily, it is He Who is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Those who dispute about the signs of Allah without any authority bestowed on them,- there is nothing in their breasts but (the quest of) greatness, which they shall never attain to: seek refuge, then, in Allah: It is He Who hears and sees (all things). ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Surely those who dispute Allah’s signs—with no proof given to them—have nothing in their hearts but greed for dominance, which they will never attain. So seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He alone is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing. ### Taqi Usmani Surely, those who quarrel in Allah’s verses without any authority having reached them, there is nothing in their hearts but pride of greatness that they are not (able) to reach. So, seek refuge with Allah. Surely, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. ### Abdul Haleem As for those who, with no authority to do so, dispute God’s messages, there is nothing in their hearts but a thirst for a greatness they will never attain. Seek refuge in God, for He is the All Hearing, the All Seeing. ### Arthur John Arberry Those who dispute concerning the signs of God, without any authority come to them, in their breasts is only pride, that they shall never attain. So seek thou refuge in God; surely He is the All-hearing, the All-seeing. ### E. Henry Palmer Verily, those who wrangle concerning the signs of God without authority having come to them, there is naught in their breasts but pride; but they shall not attain it: do thou then seek refuge in God; verily, He both hears and looks! ### Hamid S. Aziz Surely those who dispute about the revelations (signs, communications) of Allah without any authority that has come to them, there is naught in their breasts but (a desire) to become great which they shall never attain. Therefore, seek refuge in Allah, surely He, only He is the Hearer, the Seer. ### Mahmoud Ghali Surely the ones who dispute concerning the signs of Allah without any all-binding authority having come up to them, decidedly in their breasts is nothing except pride; in no way will they be attaining (Literally: reaching) it, (i. e., the attainment of the fulfillment of their pride, or harming the Prophet, or attaining Prophet hood) so seek refuge in Allah; surely He, Ever He, is The Ever-Hearing, The Ever-Beholding. ### George Sale As to those who impugn the signs of God, without any convincing proof which hath been revealed unto them, there is nothing but pride in their breasts; but they shall not attain their desire: Wherefore fly for refuge unto God; for it is He who heareth and seeth. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed Verily, those who disagree (and dispute) about the Signs of Allah without any authority given to them— In their hearts there is nothing but (the search for) greatness which they shall never get then, find (help and) shelter in Allah, Verily, it is He is the All Hearing (As-Sami’), the All Seeing (Al-Baseer). ### Amatul Rahman Omar Those who dispute regarding the Messages of Allâh without any authoritative proof having come to them (from God in their support), there is nothing in their minds but (an ambition for) greatness to which (goal) they can never attain. So (do not bother about them rather) go on seeking refuge in Allâh (against their mischiefs). Surely, He alone is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. ### Ali Quli Qarai Indeed those who dispute the signs of Allah without any authority that may have come to them —there is only vanity in their breasts, which they will never satisfy. So seek the protection of Allah; indeed He is the All-hearing, the All-seeing. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü Kendilerine gelmiş bir reddedilemez delil olmaksızın Allah'ın işaretleri hakkında mücadele edenler var ya, onların içlerinde, asla ulaşamayacakları bir kibirden başka bir şey yoktur (Kibriya'nın farkındalığına asla ulaşamayacaklardır)! Sen hemen Allah'a sığın çünkü işiten O'dur, gören O! ### Gültekin Onan Şüphesiz, kendilerine gelmiş bulunan hiçbir delil olmaksızın, Tanrı'nın ayetleri konusunda mücadele edenlere gelince; onların göğüslerinde kendisine ulaşamayacakları bir büyüklük (isteğin)den başkası yoktur. Artık sen Tanrı'ya sığın. Şüphesiz O hakkıyla işiten, hakkıyla görendir. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Kendilerine gelmiş kat'i bir delil (ve salahiyyet) olmaksızın (körü körüne) Allahın ayetleri hakkında mücadele edenlerin göğüslerinde, hiç şübhe yok ki, asla yetişemeyecekleri bir büyüklük (hevesin) den başka bir şey yokdur. Hemen sen (onların şerrinden) Allaha sığın.
