Surah Ghafir (The Forgiver) — سورة غافر - **Verse:** 4 / 85 · **Juz:** 24 · **Mushaf page:** 466 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ghafir/verse-4 ## Arabic مَا يُجَادِلُ ف۪ٓي اٰيَاتِ اللّٰهِ اِلَّا الَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُوا فَلَا يَغْرُرْكَ تَقَلُّبُهُمْ فِي الْبِلَادِ ## Transcription Ma yujadilu fee ayatiAllahi illa allatheena kafaroo falayaghrurka taqallubuhum fee albilad ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley No one disputes Allah’s Signs except those who are kafir. Do not let their free movement about the earth deceive you. ### Progressive Muslims None dispute in God's revelations except those who have rejected. So do not be impressed by their influence through the land. ### Shabbir Ahmed None but those who are determined to deny the Truth will dispute the Messages of Allah. Let not their thump and thud in the towns impress you. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation None disputes concerning the proofs of God save those who ignore warning, so let not delude thee their going to and fro in the land. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation None dispute in the revelations of God except those who have rejected. So do not be impressed by their influence in the land. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament None argues against GOD's revelations except those who disbelieve. Do not be impressed by their apparent success. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Only the unbelievers dispute the revelations of God. So do not let their activities in the land deceive you. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) No one disputes concerning the signs of Allah except those who disbelieve, so be not deceived by their [uninhibited] movement throughout the land. ### Muhammad Asad NONE BUT THOSE who are bent on denying the truth would call God’s messages in question. But let it not deceive thee that they seem to be able to do as they please on earth: ### Marmaduke Pickthall None argue concerning the revelations of Allah save those who disbelieve, so let not their turn of fortune in the land deceive thee (O Muhammad). ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary None but the unbelievers[1] dispute regarding the Signs of Allah.[2] So let not their strutting about in the land delude you.[3] _Footnotes_ - [1] Here, the word kufr has been used in two meanings: for ingratitude and for denial of the truth. According to the first meaning, the sentence would mean: As against the revelations of Allah this sort of behavior is adopted only by those who have forgotten His bounties and who have even lost the feeling that it is by His bounty that they are flourishing. According to the second, it would mean: This sort of behavior is adopted only by those who have turned away from the truth and are determined not to accept it. From the context it becomes obvious that here the disbeliever does not imply every non-Muslim, for a non- Muslim who disputes a point in good faith for the sake of understanding Islam, and who tries to grasp thoroughly those things which he fends hard to follow, although a non Muslim technically, yet that which has been condemned in this verse does not apply to him. - [2] There is a gap between the previous sentence and this, which has been left for the listener to fill. From the context and style it becomes evident that those who adopt the attitude of disputation as against the revelations of Allah Almighty, can never escape the punishment. Therefore, they shall inevitably meet their doom. Now, if one sees that those people, even after adopting such an attitude, are strutting about, their business is flourishing, their governments functioning in a grand style and they are enjoying the good things of life, one should not be misled into thinking that they have escaped Allah’s punishment, or that war against Allah’s revelations is a sport which can be adopted as a pastime and its evil consequences warded off easily. This, in fact, is a respite which they have been granted by Allah. Those who abuse this respite for doing more mischief are indeed preparing for an ignominious end. - [3] That is, the torment that seized them in the world was not their final punishment, but Allah has also decreed that they shall go to Hell. Another meaning can be: Just as the nations of the past have gone to their doom, so will those people also who are committing disbelief go to Hell, according to the fixed decree of Allah. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab No one contends with opposing argument against Allah's signs and revelations and seem resolved to dispute the truth but those who deny Him and refuse to acknowledge His authority, and so let not their prosperous commercial travels befool your mind. O Muhammad nor delude your judgement. ### Bijan Moeinian None disputes the word of God except the disbelievers. Therefore, never mind them going from one place to another engaged in disinformation campaign. ### Al-Hilali & Khan None disputes in the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh but those who disbelieve. So let not their ability of going about here and there through the land (for their purposes) deceive you [O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, for their ultimate end will be the Fire of Hell]! ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali None can dispute about the Signs of Allah but the Unbelievers. Let not, then, their strutting about through the land deceive thee! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran None disputes the signs of Allah except the disbelievers, so do not be deceived by their prosperity throughout the land. ### Taqi Usmani No one quarrels about the verses of Allah, except those who disbelieve. So, their (prosperous) movements in the cities should not deceive you. ### Abdul Haleem It is only the disbelievers who dispute God’s revelations. [Prophet], do not be dazzled by their movements back and forth across the land. ### Arthur John Arberry None but the unbelievers dispute concerning the signs of God; so let not their going to and fro in the land delude thee. ### E. Henry Palmer None wrangle concerning the signs of God but those who misbelieve; then let not their going to and fro in the cities deceive thee. ### Hamid S. Aziz None dispute concerning the revelations (or Signs) of Allah but those who disbelieve, therefore, let not their strutting in the cities deceive you. ### Mahmoud Ghali In no way does anyone dispute concerning the signs of Allah except the ones who disbelieve; so do not let their moving about in the lands delude you. ### George Sale None disputeth against the signs of God, except the unbelievers: But let not their prosperous dealing in the land deceive thee with vain allurement. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed No one can dispute about the Signs (Verses) of Allah, except the unbelievers. Then, do not let their (useless and) broken words through the land deceive you! ### Amatul Rahman Omar None disputes with regard to the commandments of Allâh except those who choose disbelief.
