Surah Ghafir (The Forgiver) — سورة غافر - **Verse:** 18 / 85 · **Juz:** 24 · **Mushaf page:** 468 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ghafir/verse-18 ## Arabic وَاَنْذِرْهُمْ يَوْمَ الْاٰزِفَةِ اِذِ الْقُلُوبُ لَدَى الْحَنَاجِرِ كَاظِم۪ينَۜ مَا لِلظَّالِم۪ينَ مِنْ حَم۪يمٍ وَلَا شَف۪يعٍ يُطَاعُۜ ## Transcription Waanthirhum yawma al-azifati ithialquloobu lada alhanajiri kathimeenama liththalimeena min hameeminwala shafeeAAin yutaAA ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley And warn them of the Day of Immediacy when hearts rise choking to the throat. The wrongdoers will have no close friend nor any intercessor who might be heard. ### Progressive Muslims And warn them of the imminent Day, when the hearts will reach the throats, and many will be remorseful. The transgressors will have no friend nor intercessor to be obeyed. ### Shabbir Ahmed Hence, warn them of the Day which draws near - when the hearts will throb muffling the voices in the sound boxes. The sinners will have neither friend nor intercessor whose (word) will be heeded. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And warn them, [O Muúammad], of the Approaching Day, when hearts are at the throats, filled [with distress]. For the wrongdoers there will be no devoted friend and no intercessor [who is] obeyed. ### Muhammad Asad Hence, warn them of that Day which draws ever nearer, when the hearts will chokingly come up to the throats: no loving friend will the evildoers have, nor any intercessor who would be heeded: ### Marmaduke Pickthall Warn them (O Muhammad) of the Day of the approaching (doom), when the hearts will be choking the throats, (when) there will be no friend for the wrong-doers, nor any intercessor who will be heard. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary (O Prophet), then warn them of the Day that has drawn near,[1] the Day when hearts full of suppressed grief will leap up to the throats and the wrong-doers shall neither have any sincere friend[2] nor intercessor whose word will be heeded.[3] _Footnotes_ - [1] In the Quran the people have been made to realize again and again that Resurrection is not far off but has approached near at hand, and can take place any moment. In(Surah An-Nahal, Ayat 1), it has been said: Allah’s judgment has come, so do not clamor for hastening it. In (Surah Al-Anbiya, Ayat 1): The time of the reckoning of the people has drawn near, and yet they are turning away in heedlessness. In(Surah Al-Qamar, Ayat 1): The Hour of Resurrection has drawn near and the moon has split asunder. And in(Surah An-Najm, Ayat 57): That which is coming is near at hand, none but Allah can avert it. All this is meant to warn the people to the effect that they should not become fearless of Resurrection thinking it to be yet far away, but should mend their ways and reform themselves at once. - [2] The word hameem as used in the original implies such a friend of a person as is aroused to action when he sees him being beaten, and rushes forward to protect and save Him. - [3] This thing has been said to refute the concept of intercession held by the disbelievers. As a matter of fact, the wicked people will have no intercessor at all, for permission to intercede, if at all granted, can be granted only to the righteous servants of Allah, and Allah’s righteous servants can never make friends with the disbelievers, polytheists and sinners so that they should even think of intruding on their behalf to save them. But as the disbelievers have generally held, and still hold, the belief that the saints, whose disciples they are, will not allow that they go to Hell, but will see that they are forgiven. Therefore, it has been said: There will be no such intercessor there who may have to be listened to, and whose recommendation Allah may have to accept necessarily. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Caution them O Muhammad; against the approaching Day of Resurrection when the hearts sink, choking the breath, the tongue and the utterance, connoting extreme fear disabling them to put their thoughts into words; there and then shall they find no friend nor an intercessor whose mediation is accepted. ### Bijan Moeinian Let them know that the Day is approaching very fast when the hearts will leap up to the throat and they will stay motionless at awe. Wrongdoers then will be so sorry; they will have no friend or a counselor to defend them. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And warn them (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) of the Day that is drawing near (i.e. the Day of Resurrection), when the hearts will be choking the throats, and they can neither return them (hearts) to their chests nor can they throw them out. There will be no friend, nor an intercessor for the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers), who could be given heed to. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Warn them of the Day that is (ever) drawing near, when the hearts will (come) right up to the throats to choke (them); No intimate friend nor intercessor will the wrong-doers have, who could be listened to. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Warn them ˹O Prophet˺ of the approaching Day when the hearts will jump into the throats, suppressing distress. The wrongdoers will have neither a close friend nor intercessor to be heard. ### Taqi Usmani And warn them of the Day of approaching horror, when hearts will jump up into the throats, (and they will be) choked. There will be neither a friend for the unjust, nor an intercessor to be listened to. ### Abdul Haleem Warn them [Prophet] of the ever-approaching Day, when hearts are at throats, choking them. The evildoer will have no friends, nor any intercessor to be heeded. ### Arthur John Arberry And warn them against the Day of the Imminent when, choking with anguish, the hearts are in the throats and the evildoers have not one loyal friend, no intercessor to be heeded. ### E.
