Surah Fussilat (Explained in detail) — سورة فصلت - **Verse:** 25 / 54 · **Juz:** 24 · **Mushaf page:** 478 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-fussilat/verse-25 ## Arabic وَقَيَّضْنَا لَهُمْ قُرَنَٓاءَ فَزَيَّنُوا لَهُمْ مَا بَيْنَ اَيْد۪يهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَحَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَوْلُ ف۪ٓي اُمَمٍ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ مِنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْاِنْسِۚ اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا خَاسِر۪ينَ۟ ## Transcription Waqayyadna lahum quranaafazayyanoo lahum ma bayna aydeehim wama khalfahumwahaqqa AAalayhimu alqawlu fee omamin qad khalat minqablihim mina aljinni wal-insi innahum kanoo khasireen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley We have assigned close comrades to them who have made what is before them and behind them seem good to them. And the statement about the nations, both of jinn and men, who passed away before them has proved true of them as well. Certainly they were lost. ### Progressive Muslims And We assigned to them companions who adorned their present and past actions. Thus, the retribution has been deserved by them the same as previous nations of Jinn and humans; all of them were losers. ### Shabbir Ahmed (In the life of the world) We assigned them comrades who made pleasing to them their present and past actions. (The Divine Law so applied to them (43:36). "Birds of the same feather flock together.") - And so, the Word has come to pass for them as it did concerning the communities that lived before them, among the rural and the urban. Verily, they all are losers. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And We assigned to them companions, and they made fair to them what was before them, and what following them; and upon them the word concerning the communities of domini and servi which had passed away before them became binding: — they were losers. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation And We assigned to them associates who adorned their present and past actions. Thus, the retribution has been deserved by them the same as previous nations of Jinn and mankind; all of them were losers. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament We assign to them companions who adorn everything they do in their eyes. Thus, they end up incurring the same fate as the previous communities of jinns and humans, who were also losers. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira We had assigned to them close companions who made their past and present look attractive to them; and the fate that had once befallen the communities of jinns and men before them was justified upon them. They were indeed bound to perish. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And We appointed for them companions who made attractive to them what was before them and what was behind them [of sin], and the word has come into effect upon them among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they [all] were losers. ### Muhammad Asad for [when they became obli­vious of Us, ] We assigned to them [their own evil impulses as their] other selves, and these made appear goodly to them whatever lay open before them and whatever was beyond their ken. And so, the sentence [of doom] will have fallen due upon them together with the [other sinful] com­munities of invisible beings and humans that passed away before their time: verily, they [all] will indeed be lost! ### Marmaduke Pickthall And We assigned them comrades (in the world), who made their present and their past fairseeming unto them. And the Word concerning nations of the jinn and humankind who passed away before them hath effect for them. Lo! they were ever losers. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary We had assigned to them companions who embellished for them all that was before them and behind them.[1] Thus the same decree (of chastisement) which had overtaken the previous generations of jinn and human beings (also) became due against them. Surely they became the losers. _Footnotes_ - [1] This is the permanent and eternal way of Allah that He dots not let the men with evil intentions and desires have good companions, but lets them have bad companions according to their own inclinations. Then, as they go on descending into the depths of vice, more and more evil and wicked men and devils go on joining them as their associates and advisers and companions. Some people’s saying that so-and-so is himself a very good man but happens to have bad companions is, in fact, contrary to fact. The law of nature is that every man gets the same sort of friends as he himself is. If bad people happen to be associated with a good man, they cannot remain associated with him for long. Likewise, if good and noble men happen to be associated with evil intentioned and immoral men by chance, their association cannot last long. An evil man naturally attracts only evil men to himself and only evil men become attracted towards him just as filth attracts flits and flits are attracted by the filth. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And We have bound them to evil and Satanic companions who would follow them like their shadows and give them evil counsel and allure them to brighter present and happier destiny by negating resurrection and affirming that black was white. There has come to be what was predicted beforehand that they, like others among the Jinn and mankind of past generations, were born to be great losers. ### Bijan Moeinian [In account of their attitudes, ] God has surrounded them with the kind of companies which make their deeds fair seeming to them. Thus, they will end up where the ungrateful men and extraterrestrials (Jins) before them ended up. Indeed they were the losers. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And We have assigned for them (devils) intimate companions (in this world), who have made fair-seeming to them, what was before them (evil deeds which they were doing in the present worldly life and disbelief in the Reckoning and the Resurrection) and what was behind them (denial of the matters in the coming life of the Hereafter as regards punishment or reward). And the Word (i.e. the torment) is justified against them as it was justified against those who were among the previous generations of jinn and men that had passed away before them. Indeed they (all) were the losers. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And We have destined for them intimate companions (of like nature), who made alluring to them what was before them and behind them; and the sentence among the previous generations of Jinns and men, who have passed away, is proved against them; for they are utterly lost. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran We placed at their disposal ˹evil˺ associates who made their past and future ˹misdeeds˺ appealing to them.[1] ˹So˺ the fate of earlier communities of jinn and humans has been justified against them ˹as well˺, ˹for˺ they were truly losers. ### Taqi Usmani And We had assigned for them fellows (in the worldly life) who beautified for them what was before them and what was behind them. And (thus) the word (of punishment) became due against them along with the communities that passed before them from Jinns and human beings. Surely they were the losers. ### Abdul Haleem We have appointed, for the disbelievers, companions who make their past and present seem fair and right to them, but the sentence has already been passed on them, along with generations of jinn and men before them: they were losers. ### Arthur John Arberry We have allotted them comrades, and they have decked out fair to them that which is before them and behind them. So against them has been realized the Word concerning nations that passed away before them, men and jinn alike; surely they were losers. ### E. Henry Palmer We will allot to them mates, for they have made seemly to them what was before them and what was behind them; and due against them was the sentence on the nations who passed away before them; both of ginns and of mankind; verily, they were the losers! ### Hamid S. Aziz And We have appointed for them comrades (in the world) who made fair-seeming to them what is before them and what is behind them (in their future and their past). And the sentence concerning the nations of jinn and men that have passed away before them is proved true against them; for verily they are the losers. ### Mahmoud Ghali And We have preordained for them comrades; so they have adorned for them that which is before (Literally: between their hands) them and that which is behind them. And against them the Saying has come true among nations that passed even before them of the jinn and of mankind. Surely they were losers. ### George Sale And We will give them the devils to be their companions; for they dressed up for them the false notions which they entertained of this present world, and of that which is to come; and the sentence justly fitteth them, which was formerly pronounced on the nations of genii and men who were before them; for they perished. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed And We have given to them close companions (of the same nature, those) who made it pleasing to them what was before them and behind them; And the sentence (of Judgment) among the earlier generation of jinns' and men, who have passed away before them, is clearly against them; For they are totally lost. ### Amatul Rahman Omar And We had assigned to them certain companions who made (the sinful acts) which were being committed in their presence, and those which had been done behind them (in their past), seem fair and attractive to them. The verdict (of punishment) stands confirmed against them as it did in the case of the sinful communities of jinn (- fiery and houghty natured) and (ordinary) people who had passed away before them. As a matter of fact they all were losers. ### Ali Quli Qarai We have assigned them companions who make to seem decorous to them whatever is before them and whatever is behind them, and the word became due against them, as it did against the nations that passed away before them of jinn and humans. Cinlerden ve insanlardan kendilerinden önce gelip geçmiş ümmetlerde [yürürlükte tutulan azab] sözü onların üzerine hak oldu. Çünkü onlar hüsrana uğrayan kimselerdi. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Biz onlara bir takım yanaşmaları sebeb yapdık da önlerinde ne var, ardlarında ne varsa onlar bunları süslü gösterdiler. Cinden, insandan kendilerinden evvel geçmiş (ve helak olmuş) ümmetler içinde (işte) bunlara karşı da o söz hak olmuşdur. Doğrusu onlar, hüsrana uğrayanlardı. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı ve (Bize karşı isyankar olduklarından,) onlara (şeytani dürtülerini) öteki kişilikleri (olarak) musallat ettik; ve bunlar, önlerine serilmiş olan ile, bilgi alanlarının dışında kalanı kendilerine güzel gösterdi. Ve böylece, kendilerinden önce gelip geçmiş olan diğer (günahkar) insan ve görünmeyen varlık toplulukları için geçerli olan (ceza) vaadi onlar için de geçerli olacak.
