Surah Fussilat (Explained in detail) — سورة فصلت - **Verse:** 16 / 54 · **Juz:** 24 · **Mushaf page:** 477 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-fussilat/verse-16 ## Arabic فَاَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ ر۪يحاً صَرْصَراً ف۪ٓي اَيَّامٍ نَحِسَاتٍ لِنُذ۪يقَهُمْ عَذَابَ الْخِزْيِ فِي الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَاۜ وَلَعَذَابُ الْاٰخِرَةِ اَخْزٰى وَهُمْ لَا يُنْصَرُونَ ## Transcription Faarsalna AAalayhim reehan sarsaranfee ayyamin nahisatin linutheeqahumAAathaba alkhizyi fee alhayati addunyawalaAAathabu al-akhirati akhza wahum layunsaroon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley So We sent a howling wind against them on disastrous ill-fated days to make them taste the punishment of degradation in this world. And the punishment of the Next World is even more degrading. And they will not be helped. ### Progressive Muslims Consequently, We sent upon them violent wind, for a few miserable day, that We may let them taste the humiliating retribution in this life, and the retribution of the Hereafter is more humiliating; they can never win. ### Shabbir Ahmed And so We sent upon them a raging windstorm for days of misfortune, that We let them taste a punishment of humiliation in the life of this world. We thus afflicted them with humiliating retribution in this life, and the retribution of the Hereafter is more humiliating; they can never win. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira So We let loose on them a violent wind for several days of distress to make them taste a most disgraceful punishment here in this world, and far more shameful will be the punishment in the Hereafter, and there will be no succour for them. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgracing, and they will not be helped. ### Muhammad Asad and thereupon We let loose upon them a storm wind raging through days of misfortune, so as to give them, in the life of this world, a foretaste of suffering through humiliation: but [their] suffering in the life to come will be far more humiliating, and they will have none to succour them. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Therefor We let loose on them a raging wind in evil days, that We might make them taste the torment of disgrace in the life of the world. And verily the doom of the Hereafter will be more shameful, and they will not be helped. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary whereupon We sent upon them a fierce wind on inauspicious days[1] that We might make them taste a degrading chastisement in the life of this world.[2] And surely the chastisement of the Hereafter is even more degrading. There will be none to help them there. _Footnotes_ - [1] "Evil days" does not mean that the days in themselves were evil or ill-omened, and the torrent came because the people of Aad met with those evil or ill-omened days. If this were the meaning and there were some ill omen in the days themselves, the torment would have visited all the nations of the world. The correct meaning, therefore, is that since in those days God’s torment descended on this nation, the days were evil or ill-omened for the people of Aad. It is not correct to argue on the basis of the verse that some days are ill-omened and some auspicious. - [2] The lexicographers have disputed the meaning of the words rih-an sarsaran, which have been used for the stormy wind. Some say that they imply an intensely hot wind, others say that they imply an extremely cold wind, and some others say that they imply a wind which produces a great noise when it blows. In any case, they all agree that the words are used for a severe storm. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And so We drove against them, on some unlucky and miserable days, a fiercely cold wind swallowing the ground with fierceness and rage, vehement, merciless, roaring for vengeance, avenging wrong and punishing crime so as to taste the suffering of disgrace and multiple humiliations in life, and worse shall be the suffering Hereafter, and no one, then, can fiord them help. ### Bijan Moeinian Consequently they deserved to be humiliated by the strong windstorm that I sent upon them as punishment for several miserable days. Their punishment in Hereafter is much worth and they can never escape it. ### Al-Hilali & Khan So We sent upon them a furious wind in days of evil omen (for them) that We might give them a taste of disgracing torment in this present worldly life. But surely the torment of the Hereafter will be more disgracing, and they will never be helped. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali So We sent against them a furious Wind through days of disaster, that We might give them a taste of a Penalty of humiliation in this life; but the Penalty of a Hereafter will be more humiliating still: and they will find no help. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran So We sent against them a furious wind,[1] for ˹several˺ miserable days, to make them taste a humiliating punishment in this worldly life. But far more humiliating will be the punishment of the Hereafter. And they will not be helped. ### Taqi Usmani So, We let loose a wild wind on them in unlucky days to make them taste the humiliating punishment in the present life. And of course, the punishment of the Hereafter will be much more humiliating, and they will not be helped. ### Abdul Haleem so We let a roaring wind loose on them for a few disastrous days to make them taste the punishment of shame in this world; more shameful still will be the punishment of the life to come, and they will not be helped. ### Arthur John Arberry Then We loosed against them a wind clamorous in days of ill fortune, that We might let them taste the chastisement of degradation in the present life; and the chastisement of the world to come is even more degrading, and they shall not be helped. ### E. Henry Palmer And we sent upon them a cold blast in unfortunate days, that we might make them taste the torment of disgrace in the life of this world;- but the torment of the hereafter is more disgraceful, and they shall not be helped. ### Hamid S. Onlara (hiç bir suretle) yardım da olunmaz. ### İbni Kesir Böylece uğursuz günlerde dünya hayatında rüsvaylık azabını tattıralım diye Biz de onların üzerine şiddetli bir rüzgar gönderdik. Ahiret azabı ise, elbet daha horlayıcıdır. Onlara yardım da edilmez. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Bunun üzerine, bu dünya hayatında aşağılanmanın azabını tattırmak için o bahtsız günlerde üzerlerine dondurucu bir rüzgar gönderdik.
