Surah Az-Zumar (The Groups) — سورة الزمر - **Verse:** 7 / 75 · **Juz:** 23 · **Mushaf page:** 458 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-az-zumar/verse-7 ## Arabic اِنْ تَكْفُرُوا فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنْكُمْ وَلَا يَرْضٰى لِعِبَادِهِ الْكُفْرَۚ وَاِنْ تَشْكُرُوا يَرْضَهُ۬ لَكُمْۜ وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ اُخْرٰىۜ ثُمَّ اِلٰى رَبِّكُمْ مَرْجِعُكُمْ فَيُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَۜ اِنَّهُ عَل۪يمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ ## Transcription In takfuroo fa-inna Allaha ghaniyyunAAankum wala yarda liAAibadihi alkufra wa-intashkuroo yardahu lakum wala taziru waziratunwizra okhra thumma ila rabbikum marjiAAukumfayunabbi-okum bima kuntum taAAmaloona innahu AAaleemun bithatiassudoor ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley If you are ungrateful, Allah is rich beyond need of any of you and He is not pleased with ingratitude in His slaves. But if you are grateful, He is pleased with you for that. No burden-bearer can bear another’s burden. Then you will return to your Lord and He will inform you of what you did. He knows what the heart contains. ### Progressive Muslims If you reject, then know that God is in no need of you, and He dislikes rejection for His servants. And if you are appreciative, He is pleased for you. And none shall bear the burdens of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you of everything you had done. He is fully aware of what is inside the chests. ### Shabbir Ahmed If you are ungrateful, behold, Allah is in no need of you. He does not approve of ingratitude in His servants. And if you are grateful, He approves it for you. And no laden one will bear the burden of another. Ultimately, unto your Lord is your return. And, then He will make you understand everything you were doing in life. God is independent of you, and He does not favour ingratitude on the part of His creatures. If you are grateful He will be pleased with you. For no one who carries a burden bears another's load; and your returning is to your Lord, when He will tell you what you used to do. In time, unto your Sustainer you all must return, and then He will make you [truly] understand all that you were doing [in life]: for, verily, He has full knowledge of what is in the hearts [of men]. ### Marmaduke Pickthall If ye are thankless, yet Allah is Independent of you, though He is not pleased with thanklessness for His bondmen; and if ye are thankful He is pleased therewith for you. No laden soul will bear another's load. Then unto your Lord is your return; and He will tell you what ye used to do. Lo! He knoweth what is in the breasts (of men). ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary If you disbelieve, know well that Allah has no need of you.[1] Yet He does not like unbelief in His servants.[2] But if you are thankful, your thankfulness will please Him.[3] No one shall bear another's burden.[4] You are destined to return to your Lord and He will tell you what you used to do. He is well aware even of what lies hidden in your breasts. _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, your disbelief cannot cause any decrease or deficiency in His Kingdom. He will be God if you believe in Him, and He will still be God if you deny Him. He is ruling over His Kingdom by His own power. Your believing or denying Him does not affect His Sovereignty in any way. According to Hadith (Muslim), Allah says: O My servants, if all of you, the former and the latter, the men and the jinns, become like the heart of a most sinful person among you, it will cause no deficiency whatever in My Kingdom. - [2] That is, He does not approve, not for any interest of His own but for the interest and benefit of the servants themselves that they should disbelieve, for disbelief is harmful for them. Here, one should bear in mind the fact that Allah’s will is one thing and His approval and pleasure another. Nothing in the world can happen against Allah’s will, but many things can happen against His approval, and are happening day and night. For example, the dominance of the tyrants and the wicked in the world, the existence of thieves and robbers, the presence of murderers and adulterers, are possible only because Allah has made room for the occurrence of these evils and the existence of these criminals in the scheme of things ordained by Him. Then He provides opportunities also of committing evil just as He provides opportunities to the good of doing good. Had He made no room for these evils and had provided no opportunities of committing wrongs to the evildoers, no evil would have ever occurred in the world. All this is based on Allah’s will. But the occurrence of an act under divine will does not mean that Allah’s approval also goes with it. This may be explained by an example. If a person tries to obtain his living only by lawful means, Allah provides him his living through those means. This is His will. But providing for the thief or the robber or the corrupt person under the will does not mean that Allah also likes stealing and robbery and taking of bribes. Allah says the same thing here, as if to say: If you want to disbelieve, you may do so. We will not stop you from this nor make you believe forcibly. But We do not approve that you should deny your Creator and Provider, being His servants, for it is harmful for yourselves. Our Godhead is not harmed and affected by it in any way. - [3] The word shukr (gratitude) has been used here as against kufr (disbelief) instead of Iman (belief). This by itself shows that kufr is, in fact, ingratitude and disloyalty, and faith is the necessary requirement of gratitude. The person who has any feeling of the favors of Allah Almighty, cannot adopt any other way than that of belief and faith. Therefore, gratitude and faith are correlatives. Wherever there is gratitude there will be faith also. On the contrary, wherever there is disbelief, there will be no question of gratitude at all, for gratitude along with disbelief is meaningless. - [4] It means this: Each one of you is himself responsible for his deeds. If a person adopts disbelief in order to please others, or to avoid their displeasure, those others will never bear the burden of his disbelief, but will leave him to bear his own burden. Therefore, anyone who comes to know that disbelief is wrong and belief is right, should give up the wrong attitude and adopt the right attitude, and avoid making himself liable for Allah’s punishment by associating himself with his family or brotherhood or nation. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab If you -people- deny Allah and/or display ingratitude and ungratefulness to Him instead of being thankful to Him for His favours then you must realize that He is Absolute and totally Independent of you. It does not please Him to see those whom He created in order to worship Him actually deny Him, disobey Him and display ingratitude. Conversely, it pleases Him if you are thankful and your deeds reflect your gratitude. And no sou1 bearing wrongs or not bears in any way the wrong of another and in the end shall all of you return to Him; there and then shall He inform you of all that you had done or left undone He is Alim?n (Omniscient) indeed of all private thoughts and feelings reposited in the bosoms. ### Bijan Moeinian Your disbelief can not degrade God, yet [for your own sake and out of His love] He does not want to see you in disbelief. If you choose to belief, however, He is happy for you. Know that no soul is responsible for the sin of another soul. To God is your ultimate return when He will play back your deeds. Know that God knows even the innermost of your thoughts. ### Al-Hilali & Khan If you disbelieve, then verily, Allâh is not in need of you; He likes not disbelief for His slaves. And if you are grateful (by being believers), He is pleased therewith for you. No bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you what you used to do. Verily, He is the All-Knower of that which is in (men’s) breasts. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali If ye reject (Allah), Truly Allah hath no need of you; but He liketh not ingratitude from His servants: if ye are grateful, He is pleased with you. No bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another. In the end, to your Lord is your Return, when He will tell you the truth of all that ye did (in this life). for He knoweth well all that is in (men's) hearts. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran If you disbelieve, then ˹know that˺ Allah is truly not in need of you, nor does He approve of disbelief from His servants. But if you become grateful ˹through faith˺, He will appreciate that from you. No soul burdened with sin will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you of what you used to do. He certainly knows best what is ˹hidden˺ in the heart. ### Taqi Usmani If you disbelieve, then, Allah does not need you at all, however He does not like for His servants to be disbelievers; and if you are grateful, He will like it for you. No one will bear the burden of someone else. Then, to your Lord is your return; so He will tell you about what you used to do. He is aware of whatever lies in the hearts. ### Abdul Haleem If you are ungrateful, remember God has no need of you, yet He is not pleased by ingrati-tude in His servants; if you are grateful, He is pleased [to see] it in you. No soul will bear another’s burden. You will return to your Lord in the end and He will inform you of what you have done: He knows well what is in the depths of [your] hearts. ### Arthur John Arberry If you are unthankful, God is independent of you, yet He approves not unthankfulness in His servants; but if you are thankful, He will approve it in you. And no soul laden bears the load of another. Then to your Lord shall you return, and He will tell you what you have been doing. He knows the thoughts within the breasts. ### E. Henry Palmer If ye be thankless, yet is God independent of you. He is not pleased with ingratitude in His servants; but if ye give thanks, He is pleased with that in you. Verily, He knows the natures of men's breasts! ### Hamid S. Aziz If you are ungrateful, then surely Allah is Independent (or self-sufficient) above all need of you; though He does not like ungratefulness in His servants; and if you are grateful, He is pleased with you; and no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another; in the end to your Lord is your return, then will He inform you of the truth of what you did; surely He is Aware of what is in the breasts (or heart of men). ### Mahmoud Ghali In case you disbelieve, then surely Allah is Ever-Affluent (Literally: Ever-Rich) to do without you, and He is not satisfied with disbelief from His bondmen. And in case you thank (Him), He is satisfied with it for you. And no encumbered self (can) be encumbered with the encumberance of another. Thereafter to your Lord (is) your return; then He will fully inform you of whatever you were doing. Surely He is Ever-Knowing of the (inmost thoughts) within the breasts. (Literally: what the breasts own) ### George Sale If ye be ungrateful, verily God hath no need of you; yet He liketh not ingratitude in his servants: But if ye be thankful, He will be well pleased with you. A burdened soul shall not bear the burden of another: Hereafter shall ye return unto your Lord, and He shall declare unto you that which ye have wrought, and will reward you accordingly; for He knoweth the innermost parts of your breasts. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed If you reject, Allah, surely (He) does not have any need of you; But He does not like the thankless from His servants. And if you are thankful, He is pleased with you. No (human being who is a) bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another (human being). Then to your Lord is your Return, in the end, when He will tell you the truth of all that you did (in this life). Verily, He knows well all that is in (everyone's) hearts. ### Amatul Rahman Omar If you show ingratitude, surely, Allâh is Independent of you (He does not require your thanks). Yet He does not approve of His people to be ungrateful. (Indeed it is for your own sake that) He approves of you being grateful. And no soul that bears a burden can bear the burden (of the sins) of another. Behold! to your Lord shall you all return so that He will inform you of all that you have been doing.
