Surah Az-Zumar (The Groups) — سورة الزمر - **Verse:** 45 / 75 · **Juz:** 24 · **Mushaf page:** 462 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-az-zumar/verse-45 ## Arabic وَاِذَا ذُكِرَ اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ اشْمَاَزَّتْ قُلُوبُ الَّذ۪ينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْاٰخِرَةِۚ وَاِذَا ذُكِرَ الَّذ۪ينَ مِنْ دُونِه۪ٓ اِذَا هُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ ## Transcription Wa-itha thukira Allahuwahdahu ishmaazzat quloobu allatheena layu/minoona bil-akhirati wa-itha thukiraallatheena min doonihi itha hum yastabshiroon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley When Allah is mentioned on His own, the hearts of those who do not believe in the akhira shrink back shuddering, but when others apart from Him are mentioned, they jump for joy. ### Progressive Muslims And when God Alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter are filled with aversion; and when others are mentioned beside Him, they rejoice! ### Shabbir Ahmed And yet, when Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who believe not in the life to come, shrink with aversion. But, when others (such as their 'holy men') are mentioned besides Him, behold, they rejoice. But when others are mentioned apart from God, they begin to rejoice. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And when Allah is mentioned alone, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink with aversion, but when those [worshipped] other than Him are mentioned, immediately they rejoice. ### Muhammad Asad And yet, whenever God alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who will not believe in the life to come contract with bitter aversion - whereas, when those [imaginary powers] are mentioned side by side with Him, lo, they rejoice! ### Marmaduke Pickthall And when Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who believe not in the Hereafter are repelled, and when those (whom they worship) beside Him are mentioned, behold! they are glad. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary When Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter contract with bitterness, but when deities apart from Allah are mentioned, they are filled with joy.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] This evil is common to almost all polytheistic people of the world, and even some unfortunate Muslims also suffer from it, They profess with the tongue that they believe in Allah, but when One Allah alone is mentioned before them, their faces arc distorted, and they say: This man certainly does not believe in the saints and holy men, that is why he talks of Allah and Allah alone. And if others besides Allah are mentioned, they are delighted, and their faces brighten up with joy. Their this attitude shows as to who is the actual object of their love and esteem. Allama Alusi, in his commentary Ruh al-Maani, has related his own experience here. He says: One day I saw that a man was invoking the help of a dead saint in his affliction. I said: O bondsman of Allah, invoke Allah, for He Himself says: If My servants ask you, O Prophet, concerning Me, tell them I am quite near to them. I hear and answer the prayer of the supplicant when he calls to Me, (Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayat 186), Hearing this, the man became angry. The people told me afterwards that he said: This man is a denier of the saints. And some others heard him also say: The saints answer the prayers more promptly than does Allah. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And when the Name of Allah alone is mentioned those who deny the Hereafter grow peevish and their hearts come to be filled with aversion or disgust reflected on their countenances, whereas when other objects of worship -their false gods- are referred to, they rejoice beyond a common Joy. ### Bijan Moeinian When the discussion centers only around the Lord, those who disbelieve in Hereafter become upset; but when the others’ name is added to the prayer, they become delighted. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And when Allâh Alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who believe not in the Hereafter are filled with disgust (from the Oneness of Allâh توحيد الله) and when those (whom they obey or worship) besides Him [like all false deities other than Allâh, - it may be a Messenger, an angel, a pious man, a jinni, or any other creature even idols, graves of religious people, saints, priests, monks and others.] are mentioned, behold, they rejoice![1] ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali When Allah, the One and Only, is mentioned, the hearts of those who believe not in the Hereafter are filled with disgust and horror; but when (gods) other than He are mentioned, behold, they are filled with joy! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Yet when Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who disbelieve in the Hereafter are filled with disgust.
