Surah Az-Zumar (The Groups) — سورة الزمر - **Verse:** 15 / 75 · **Juz:** 23 · **Mushaf page:** 459 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-az-zumar/verse-15 ## Arabic فَاعْبُدُوا مَا شِئْتُمْ مِنْ دُونِه۪ۜ قُلْ اِنَّ الْخَاسِر۪ينَ الَّذ۪ينَ خَسِرُٓوا اَنْفُسَهُمْ وَاَهْل۪يهِمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِۜ اَلَا ذٰلِكَ هُوَ الْخُسْرَانُ الْمُب۪ينُ ## Transcription FaAAbudoo ma shi/tum mindoonihi qul inna alkhasireena allatheena khasirooanfusahum waahleehim yawma alqiyamati ala thalikahuwa alkhusranu almubeen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley so worship anything you will apart from Him!’ Say: ‘The real losers are those who lose themselves and their families on the Day of Rising. ’ Is not that clear loss? ### Progressive Muslims "Therefore, serve whatever you wish besides Him. " Say: "The losers are those who lose their souls, and their families, on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, such is the real loss." ### Shabbir Ahmed You may worship whatever you wish besides Him. " Say, "The real losers are those who lose their "Selves" and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Ah, that is without doubt the obvious loss." Say: "Behold, the [true] losers will be they who shall have lost their own selves and their kith and kin on Resurrection Day: for is not this, this, the [most] obvious loss? ### Marmaduke Pickthall Then worship what ye will beside Him. Say: The losers will be those who lose themselves and their housefolk on the Day of Resurrection. Ah, that will be the manifest loss! ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary So serve, apart from Him, whomsoever you please." Say: "Behold, the real losers shall be those who will have lost their own selves and their kith and kin on the Day of Resurrection. Behold, that is the obvious loss.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] Bankruptcy is loss of a person’s capital and failure of his business so that he is unable to pay his debts in full. This same metaphor Allah has used here for the disbelievers and polytheists, The sum total of whatever man has gotten in this worldly life, his intellect, body, powers, capabilities, means and opportunities is, in fact, the capital which he invests in the business of the worldly life. If a person invested all this capital on the hypothesis that there is no God, or that there are many gods, whose servant he is, and that he is not accountable to anyone, or that someone else will rescue him on Judgment Day, it would mean that he made a losing bargain and lost all his capital. This is his first loss. His second loss is that in everything that he did, on the basis of the wrong hypothesis, he went on wronging himself and many other men, and the coming generations and many other creatures of Allah, throughout his life. Thus, he got into countless debts, but has no money with which he may fully pay his debts. Over and above this, he has not only himself incurred this loss, but has caused the same loss to his children and near and dear ones and friends and fellow countrymen by his wrong education and training and wrong example. It is these three losses together which Allah has called khusran-i-mubin (utter bankruptcy) in this verse. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab "Whereas you are free to worship whom you please or whom you choose besides Him" And say to them: "The big losers in Day of Judgement shall he those who had lost their own souls as well as their own people and evidently shall this be the irretrievable loss. " ### Bijan Moeinian As for you, you may worship whoever you choose. Say: "The real losers are those who find their souls, as well as their families’ souls, lost on the Day of Judgment. Know that this is real failure" ### Al-Hilali & Khan So worship what you like besides Him. Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "The losers are those who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Verily, that will be a manifest loss!" ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali "Serve ye what ye will besides him." Say: "Truly, those in loss are those who lose their own souls and their People on the Day of Judgment: Ah! that is indeed the (real and) evident Loss! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Worship then whatever ˹gods˺ you want instead of Him." Say, "The ˹true˺ losers are those who will lose themselves and their families on Judgment Day. That is indeed the clearest loss.” ### Taqi Usmani So, worship what you wish other than Him." Say, "Indeed, the losers are those who (will) lose their selves and their people on the Day of Judgment.
