Woe then to those who did wrong on account of the punishment of a painful Day! ### Progressive Muslims The groups disputed among themselves. Woe to those who have been wicked from the retribution of a painful Day. ### Shabbir Ahmed (This was the true Monotheism he had brought) but factions among them began to hold different views. Then woe unto those who do wrong from the doom of a painful day. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Then the factions fell apart among themselves.[1] So woe to the wrong-doers from the chastisement of a grievous Day. _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, one group of the people denied him and in their antagonism went to the extent of accusing him of illegitimate birth and got him crucified as they thought. The other group believed in him but owing to exaggerated reverence made him son of God, and then the question of man’s being God became such a riddle for it that every effort to resolve it caused it to be divided into countless sects. What a punishment awaits for those who initiated these disagreements on the Day of Judgment. ### Al-Hilali & Khan But the sects from among themselves differed.
