Surah Az-Zukhruf (Ornaments of gold) — سورة الزخرف - **Verse:** 61 / 89 · **Juz:** 25 · **Mushaf page:** 493 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-az-zukhruf/verse-61 ## Arabic وَاِنَّهُ لَعِلْمٌ لِلسَّاعَةِ فَلَا تَمْتَرُنَّ بِهَا وَاتَّبِعُونِۜ هٰذَا صِرَاطٌ مُسْتَق۪يمٌ ## Transcription Wa-innahu laAAilmun lissaAAatifala tamtarunna biha wattabiAAooni hathasiratun mustaqeem ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley He is a Sign of the Hour. Have no doubt about it. But follow me. This is a straight path. ### Progressive Muslims And he was a lesson for the Hour. So have no doubt about it. And follow Me; this is a straight path. ### Shabbir Ahmed And, behold, this (Qur'an) indeed gives knowledge of the oncoming Revolution. Hence, bear no doubt about it and follow Me. So doubt ye not concerning it, but follow Me. This is the right path. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Verily he [i.e., Jesus) is a portent of the Hour.[1] So be in no doubt concerning it and follow Me. This is the Straight Way. _Footnotes_ - [1] Another translation of this sentence can be: He is a means of the knowledge of Resurrection. Here the question arises: What is implied by "he"? According to Hasan Basri and Saeed bin Jubair it implies the Quran. That is, one can learn from the Quran that Resurrection will come. But this commentary is irrelevant to the context. There is nothing in the context on the basis of which it may be said that it refers to the Quran. Other commentators almost unanimously have expressed the opinion that it implies the prophet Jesus Christ (peace be upon him), and this is suitable to the context. Now the question is: In what sense has Jesus Christ been called a sign or a means of the knowledge of Resurrection? Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, Ikrimah, Qatadah, Suddi, Dahhak, Abul Aliyah and Abu Malik say that this refers to the second coming of the Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) as has been foretold in a large number of the traditions, and the verse means that when he comes the second time to the world, it will become known that Resurrection is not far behind. But in spite of the great authority that these scholars hold it is difficult to believe that in this verse the second advent of the Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) has been called a sign of Resurrection, or a means of its knowledge. For it is contradicted by the next verse. His second advent, indeed, can be a means of the knowledge of Resurrection only for those people who will be living in that future period or will be born after that. How could he be regarded as a means of the knowledge for the pagans of Makkah, who are being asked not to have any doubt about it? Therefore, the correct interpretation in our opinion is the one that has been given by some other commentators, according to which the Prophet Jesus’ (peace be upon him) birth without a father and his making a bird out of clay and his raising the dead back to life has been presented as a proof of the possibility of Resurrection. So, the divine words would mean: Why do you think it is impossible for God to raise you and all mankind from death when He can create a child without a father and a servant of His can breathe life into an image of clay and raise the dead back to life by His permission? ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Coming events cast their shadow before, and so will Isa whose return to earth shall be the sign of impending Judgement and that the Final Hour is þindeed imminent. Therefore do not doubt the event you people and follow My Messenger who guides you to My path of righteousness. ### Bijan Moeinian His birth [most probably the second coming (birth) of Christ] is the sign for upcoming Day of resurrection. Therefore do not have any doubt about it [Jesus or Resurrection] and follow Me (God) as this is the straight path. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And he [‘Îsâ (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)] shall be a known sign for (the coming of) the Hour (Day of Resurrection) [i.e. ‘Isâ’s (Jesus) descent on the earth].[1] Therefore have no doubt concerning it (i.e. the Day of Resurrection). And follow Me (Allâh) (i.e. be obedient to Allâh and do what He orders you to do, O mankind)! This is the Straight Path (of Islâmic Monotheism, leading to Allâh and to His Paradise). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And (Jesus) shall be a Sign (for the coming of) the Hour (of Judgment): therefore have no doubt about the (Hour), but follow ye Me: this is a Straight Way. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran And his ˹second˺ coming is truly a sign for the Hour. So have no doubt about it, and follow me. This is the Straight Path. ### Taqi Usmani And he (‘Īsā) is a source of knowledge of the Hour (the Day of Judgment); so do not be in doubt about it, and follow me.
