_In the name of God, the Almighty, the Merciful._

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّح۪يمِ

## Verse 1

حٰمٓۜ

Ha-meem

ḥā mīm

## Verse 2

وَالْكِتَابِ الْمُب۪ينِۙ

Walkitabi almubeen

By the Clear Writ!

## Verse 3

اِنَّا جَعَلْنَاهُ قُرْءٰناً عَرَبِياًّ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَۚ

Inna jaAAalnahu qur-ananAAarabiyyan laAAallakum taAAqiloona

We have made it an Arabic recitation, that you might use reason,

## Verse 4

وَاِنَّهُ ف۪ٓي اُمِّ الْكِتَابِ لَدَيْنَا لَعَلِيٌّ حَك۪يمٌۜ

Wa-innahu fee ommi alkitabi ladaynalaAAaliyyun hakeem

And it is in the foundation of the Writ, with Us, exalted and wise.

## Verse 5

اَفَنَضْرِبُ عَنْكُمُ الذِّكْرَ صَفْحاً اَنْ كُنْتُمْ قَوْماً مُسْرِف۪ينَ

Afanadribu AAankumu aththikrasafhan an kuntum qawman musrifeen

Shall We then turn the remembrance away from you because you are a people committing excess?

## Verse 6

وَكَمْ اَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ فِي الْاَوَّل۪ينَ

Wakam arsalna min nabiyyin feeal-awwaleen

And how many a prophet did We send to the former peoples!

## Verse 7

وَمَا يَأْت۪يهِمْ مِنْ نَبِيٍّ اِلَّا كَانُوا بِه۪ يَسْتَهْزِؤُ۫نَ

Wama ya/teehim min nabiyyin illakanoo bihi yastahzi-oon

But there came not to them a prophet save they mocked him.

## Verse 8

فَاَهْلَكْـنَٓا اَشَدَّ مِنْهُمْ بَطْشاً وَمَضٰى مَثَلُ الْاَوَّل۪ينَ

Faahlakna ashadda minhum batshanwamada mathalu al-awwaleen

And We destroyed stronger than them in might; and the example of the former peoples has gone before.

## Verse 9

وَلَئِنْ سَاَلْتَهُمْ مَنْ خَلَقَ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضَ لَيَقُولُنَّ خَلَقَهُنَّ الْعَز۪يزُ الْعَل۪يمُۙ

Wala-in saaltahum man khalaqa assamawatiwal-arda layaqoolunna khalaqahunna alAAazeezualAAaleem

And if thou askest them who created the heavens and the earth, they will say: “There created them the Exalted in Might, the Knowing––”

## Verse 10

اَلَّذ۪ي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْاَرْضَ مَهْداً وَجَعَلَ لَكُمْ ف۪يهَا سُبُلاً لَعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَۚ

Allathee jaAAala lakumu al-ardamahdan wajaAAala lakum feeha subulan laAAallakum tahtadoon

Who made the earth a bed for you, and made roads for you therein that you might be guided;

## Verse 11

وَالَّذ۪ي نَزَّلَ مِنَ السَّمَٓاءِ مَٓاءً بِقَدَرٍۚ فَاَنْشَرْنَا بِه۪ بَلْدَةً مَيْتاًۚ كَذٰلِكَ تُخْرَجُونَ

Wallathee nazzala mina assama-imaan biqadarin faansharna bihi baldatan maytan kathalikatukhrajoon

And who sent down water from the sky in measure — and We resurrected thereby a dead land; thus will you be brought forth —

## Verse 12

وَالَّذ۪ي خَلَقَ الْاَزْوَاجَ كُلَّهَا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِنَ الْفُلْكِ وَالْاَنْعَامِ مَا تَرْكَبُونَۙ

Wallathee khalaqa al-azwajakullaha wajaAAala lakum mina alfulki wal-anAAamima tarkaboon

And who created the pairs, all of them, and made for you of ships and cattle that whereon you ride,

## Verse 13

لِتَسْتَوُ۫ا عَلٰى ظُهُورِه۪ ثُمَّ تَذْكُرُوا نِعْمَةَ رَبِّكُمْ اِذَا اسْتَوَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ وَتَقُولُوا سُبْحَانَ الَّذ۪ي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِن۪ينَۙ

Litastawoo AAala thuhoorihithumma tathkuroo niAAmata rabbikum itha istawaytumAAalayhi wataqooloo subhana allathee sakhkhara lanahatha wama kunna lahu muqrineen

That you might settle yourselves upon their backs; then remember the favour of your Lord when you have settled yourselves thereon, and say: “Glory be to Him who made this subject for us when we were not equal to it!

## Verse 14

وَاِنَّٓا اِلٰى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ

Wa-inna ila rabbinalamunqaliboon

“And to our Lord are we returning.”

## Verse 15

وَجَعَلُوا لَهُ مِنْ عِبَادِه۪ جُزْءاًۜ اِنَّ الْاِنْسَانَ لَكَفُورٌ مُب۪ينٌۜ

WajaAAaloo lahu min AAibadihi juz-aninna al-insana lakafoorun mubeen

But they have appointed for Him, from among His servants, a portion; man is an obvious ingrate.

## Verse 16

اَمِ اتَّخَذَ مِمَّا يَخْلُقُ بَنَاتٍ وَاَصْفٰيكُمْ بِالْبَن۪ينَ۟

Ami ittakhatha mimma yakhluqubanatin waasfakum bilbaneen

If He has taken of what He creates daughters, and chosen for you sons,

## Verse 17

وَاِذَا بُشِّرَ اَحَدُهُمْ بِمَا ضَرَبَ لِلرَّحْمٰنِ مَثَلاً ظَلَّ وَجْهُهُ مُسْوَداًّ وَهُوَ كَظ۪يمٌ

Wa-itha bushshira ahaduhum bimadaraba lirrahmani mathalan thallawajhuhu muswaddan wahuwa katheem

(But when one of them is given glad tidings of that which he strikes for the Almighty as a similitude, his face turns black and he suppresses grief:

## Verse 18

اَوَمَنْ يُنَشَّؤُ۬ا فِي الْحِلْيَةِ وَهُوَ فِي الْخِصَامِ غَيْرُ مُب۪ينٍ

Awaman yunashshao fee alhilyatiwahuwa fee alkhisami ghayru mubeen

“What — one brought up among ornaments and in conflict not seen!”)

## Verse 19

وَجَعَلُوا الْمَلٰٓئِكَةَ الَّذ۪ينَ هُمْ عِبَادُ الرَّحْمٰنِ اِنَاثاًۜ اَشَهِدُوا خَلْقَهُمْۜ سَتُكْتَبُ شَهَادَتُهُمْ وَيُسْـَٔلُونَ

WajaAAaloo almala-ikata allatheenahum AAibadu arrahmani inathanashahidoo khalqahum satuktabu shahadatuhum wayus-aloon

And they have made the angels, who are the servants of the Almighty, females: — did they witness their creation? Their witness will be recorded; and they will be questioned.

## Verse 20

وَقَالُوا لَوْ شَٓاءَ الرَّحْمٰنُ مَا عَبَدْنَاهُمْۜ مَا لَهُمْ بِذٰلِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍۗ اِنْ هُمْ اِلَّا يَخْرُصُونَۜ

Waqaloo law shaa arrahmanuma AAabadnahum ma lahum bithalika minAAilmin in hum illa yakhrusoon

And they say: “Had the Almighty willed, we would not have served them.” They have no knowledge of that; they are only guessing.

## Verse 21

اَمْ اٰتَيْنَاهُمْ كِتَاباً مِنْ قَبْلِه۪ فَهُمْ بِه۪ مُسْتَمْسِكُونَ

Am ataynahum kitabanmin qablihi fahum bihi mustamsikoon

If We gave them a Writ before it to which they are holding:

## Verse 22

بَلْ قَالُٓوا اِنَّا وَجَدْنَٓا اٰبَٓاءَنَا عَلٰٓى اُمَّةٍ وَاِنَّا عَلٰٓى اٰثَارِهِمْ مُهْتَدُونَ

Bal qaloo inna wajadna abaanaAAala ommatin wa-inna AAala atharihimmuhtadoon

The truth is, they say: “We found our fathers upon a community, and we in their footsteps are guided.”

## Verse 23

وَكَذٰلِكَ مَٓا اَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ ف۪ي قَرْيَةٍ مِنْ نَذ۪يرٍ اِلَّا قَالَ مُتْرَفُوهَٓاۙ اِنَّا وَجَدْنَٓا اٰبَٓاءَنَا عَلٰٓى اُمَّةٍ وَاِنَّا عَلٰٓى اٰثَارِهِمْ مُقْتَدُونَ

Wakathalika ma arsalnamin qablika fee qaryatin min natheerin illa qalamutrafooha inna wajadna abaanaAAala ommatin wa-inna AAala atharihimmuqtadoon

And thus We sent not before thee into a city any warner save its opulent ones said: “We found our fathers upon a community, and we are following in their footsteps.”

## Verse 24

قَالَ اَوَلَوْ جِئْتُكُمْ بِاَهْدٰى مِمَّا وَجَدْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ اٰبَٓاءَكُمْۜ قَالُٓوا اِنَّا بِمَٓا اُرْسِلْتُمْ بِه۪ كَافِرُونَ

Qala awa law ji/tukum bi-ahdamimma wajadtum AAalayhi abaakum qalooinna bima orsiltum bihi kafiroon

He said: “What — though I bring you better guidance than what you found your fathers upon?” They said: “We are deniers of that wherewith you have been sent,”

## Verse 25

فَانْتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ فَانْظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُكَذِّب۪ينَ۟

Fantaqamna minhum fanthurkayfa kana AAaqibatu almukaththibeen

So We took vengeance on them; then see thou how was the final outcome of the deniers.

## Verse 26

وَاِذْ قَالَ اِبْرٰه۪يمُ لِاَب۪يهِ وَقَوْمِه۪ٓ اِنَّن۪ي بَرَٓاءٌ مِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَۙ

Wa-ith qala ibraheemuli-abeehi waqawmihi innanee baraon mimma taAAbudoon

And when Abraham said to his father and his people: “I am quit of what you serve,

## Verse 27

اِلَّا الَّذ۪ي فَطَرَن۪ي فَاِنَّهُ سَيَهْد۪ينِ

Illa allathee fataraneefa-innahu sayahdeen

“Save Him who originated me; and He will guide me,”[...].

## Verse 28

وَجَعَلَهَا كَلِمَةً بَاقِيَةً ف۪ي عَقِبِه۪ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

WajaAAalaha kalimatan baqiyatanfee AAaqibihi laAAallahum yarjiAAoon

And He made it a word enduring among his posterity, that they might return.

## Verse 29

بَلْ مَتَّعْتُ هٰٓؤُ۬لَٓاءِ وَاٰبَٓاءَهُمْ حَتّٰى جَٓاءَهُمُ الْحَقُّ وَرَسُولٌ مُب۪ينٌ

Bal mattaAAtu haola-i waabaahumhatta jaahumu alhaqqu warasoolunmubeen

The truth is, I gave these and their fathers enjoyment, until there came to them the truth and a clear messenger.

## Verse 30

وَلَمَّا جَٓاءَهُمُ الْحَقُّ قَالُوا هٰذَا سِحْرٌ وَاِنَّا بِه۪ كَافِرُونَ

Walamma jaahumu alhaqquqaloo hatha sihrun wa-inna bihi kafiroon

And when the truth came to them, they said: “This is sorcery, and we are deniers thereof.”

## Verse 31

وَقَالُوا لَوْلَا نُزِّلَ هٰذَا الْقُرْاٰنُ عَلٰى رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْقَرْيَتَيْنِ عَظ۪يمٍ

Waqaloo lawla nuzzila hathaalqur-anu AAala rajulin mina alqaryatayni AAatheem

And they said: “Oh, that this Qur’an had but been sent down upon a great man of the two cities!”

## Verse 32

اَهُمْ يَقْسِمُونَ رَحْمَتَ رَبِّكَۜ نَحْنُ قَسَمْنَا بَيْنَهُمْ مَع۪يشَتَهُمْ فِي الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَا وَرَفَعْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ دَرَجَاتٍ لِيَتَّخِذَ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضاً سُخْرِياًّۜ وَرَحْمَتُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ

Ahum yaqsimoona rahmata rabbika nahnuqasamna baynahum maAAeeshatahum fee alhayatiaddunya warafaAAna baAAdahum fawqabaAAdin darajatin liyattakhitha baAAduhumbaAAdan sukhriyyan warahmatu rabbika khayrun mimmayajmaAAoon

Is it they who distribute the mercy of thy Lord? We have distributed among them their livelihood in the life of this world and raised some of them above others in degree, that some of them might take others in service; but the mercy of thy Lord is better than what they amass.

## Verse 33

وَلَوْلَٓا اَنْ يَكُونَ النَّاسُ اُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً لَجَعَلْنَا لِمَنْ يَكْفُرُ بِالرَّحْمٰنِ لِبُيُوتِهِمْ سُقُفاً مِنْ فِضَّةٍ وَمَعَارِجَ عَلَيْهَا يَظْهَرُونَۙ

Walawla an yakoona annasuommatan wahidatan lajaAAalna liman yakfuru birrahmanilibuyootihim suqufan min fiddatin wamaAAarijaAAalayha yathharoon

And were it not that mankind would be one community, We would have appointed for him who denies the Almighty — for their houses — roofs of silver, and stairs whereon to ascend,

## Verse 34

وَلِبُيُوتِهِمْ اَبْوَاباً وَسُرُراً عَلَيْهَا يَتَّكِؤُ۫نَۙ

Walibuyootihim abwaban wasururanAAalayha yattaki-oon

And for their houses doors, and couches whereon to recline,

## Verse 35

وَزُخْرُفاًۜ وَاِنْ كُلُّ ذٰلِكَ لَمَّا مَتَاعُ الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَاۜ وَالْاٰخِرَةُ عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُتَّق۪ينَ۟

Wazukhrufan wa-in kullu thalika lammamataAAu alhayati addunya wal-akhiratuAAinda rabbika lilmuttaqeen

And ornaments of gold. But all that is but the enjoyment of the life of this world; and the Hereafter with your Lord is for those of prudent fear.

## Verse 36

وَمَنْ يَعْشُ عَنْ ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمٰنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهُ شَيْطَاناً فَهُوَ لَهُ قَر۪ينٌ

Waman yaAAshu AAan thikri arrahmaninuqayyid lahu shaytanan fahuwa lahu qareen

And he who is blind to the remembrance of the Almighty, We assign to him a satan and he is to him a companion,

## Verse 37

وَاِنَّهُمْ لَيَصُدُّونَهُمْ عَنِ السَّب۪يلِ وَيَحْسَبُونَ اَنَّهُمْ مُهْتَدُونَ

Wa-innahum layasuddoonahum AAani assabeeliwayahsaboona annahum muhtadoon

And they turn them away from the path, while they think that they are guided.

## Verse 38

حَتّٰٓى اِذَا جَٓاءَنَا قَالَ يَا لَيْتَ بَيْن۪ي وَبَيْنَكَ بُعْدَ الْمَشْرِقَيْنِ فَبِئْسَ الْقَر۪ينُ

Hatta itha jaanaqala ya layta baynee wabaynaka buAAda almashriqaynifabi/sa alqareen

When he has come to Us, he will say: “Would that between me and thee had been the distance of the two Easts!” And evil is the companion.

## Verse 39

وَلَنْ يَنْفَعَكُمُ الْيَوْمَ اِذْ ظَلَمْتُمْ اَنَّكُمْ فِي الْعَذَابِ مُشْتَرِكُونَ

Walan yanfaAAakumu alyawma ith thalamtumannakum fee alAAathabi mushtarikoon

“And it benefits you not this day, when you have done wrong, that you are sharers in the punishment!”

## Verse 40

اَفَاَنْتَ تُسْمِــعُ الصُّمَّ اَوْ تَهْدِي الْعُمْيَ وَمَنْ كَانَ ف۪ي ضَلَالٍ مُب۪ينٍ

Afaanta tusmiAAu assumma awtahdee alAAumya waman kana fee dalalinmubeen

Wilt thou make the deaf to hear, or wilt thou guide the blind or him who is in manifest error?

## Verse 41

فَاِمَّا نَذْهَبَنَّ بِكَ فَاِنَّا مِنْهُمْ مُنْتَقِمُونَۙ

Fa-imma nathhabanna bikafa-inna minhum muntaqimoon

And whether We take thee away — then will We take vengeance on them —

## Verse 42

اَوْ نُرِيَنَّكَ الَّذ۪ي وَعَدْنَاهُمْ فَاِنَّا عَلَيْهِمْ مُقْتَدِرُونَ

Aw nuriyannaka allathee waAAadnahumfa-inna AAalayhim muqtadiroon

Or We show thee that which We have promised them: — We are omnipotent over them —

## Verse 43

فَاسْتَمْسِكْ بِالَّـذ۪ٓي اُو۫حِيَ اِلَيْكَۚ اِنَّكَ عَلٰى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَق۪يمٍ

Fastamsik billatheeoohiya ilayka innaka AAala siratinmustaqeem

Hold thou fast that which is revealed to thee; thou art on a straight path.

## Verse 44

وَاِنَّهُ لَذِكْرٌ لَكَ وَلِقَوْمِكَۚ وَسَوْفَ تُسْـَٔلُونَ

Wa-innahu lathikrun laka waliqawmikawasawfa tus-aloon

And it is a remembrance for thee and for thy people; and you will be questioned.

## Verse 45

وَسْـَٔلْ مَنْ اَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ مِنْ رُسُلِنَاۗ اَجَعَلْنَا مِنْ دُونِ الرَّحْمٰنِ اٰلِهَةً يُعْبَدُونَ۟

Was-al man arsalna minqablika min rusulina ajaAAalna min dooni arrahmanialihatan yuAAbadoon

And ask thou of Our messengers We sent before thee: appointed We, besides the Almighty, gods to be served?

## Verse 46

وَلَقَدْ اَرْسَلْنَا مُوسٰى بِاٰيَاتِنَٓا اِلٰى فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَا۬ئِه۪ فَقَالَ اِنّ۪ي رَسُولُ رَبِّ الْعَالَم۪ينَ

Walaqad arsalna moosa bi-ayatinaila firAAawna wamala-ihi faqala innee rasoolu rabbialAAalameen

And We sent Moses with Our proofs to Pharaoh and his eminent ones, and he said: “I am the messenger of the Lord of All Creation.”

## Verse 47

فَلَمَّا جَٓاءَهُمْ بِاٰيَاتِنَٓا اِذَا هُمْ مِنْهَا يَضْحَكُونَ

Falamma jaahum bi-ayatinaitha hum minha yadhakoon

And when he came to them with Our proofs, then they laughed at them.

## Verse 48

وَمَا نُر۪يهِمْ مِنْ اٰيَةٍ اِلَّا هِيَ اَكْبَرُ مِنْ اُخْتِهَاۘ وَاَخَذْنَاهُمْ بِالْعَذَابِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

Wama nureehim min ayatin illahiya akbaru min okhtiha waakhathnahum bilAAathabilaAAallahum yarjiAAoon

And We showed them no proof save it was greater than its sister; and We seized them with the punishment, that they might return.

## Verse 49

وَقَالُوا يَٓا اَيُّهَ السَّاحِرُ ادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ بِمَا عَهِدَ عِنْدَكَ اِنَّـنَا لَمُهْتَدُونَ

Waqaloo ya ayyuha asahiruodAAu lana rabbaka bima AAahida AAindaka innanalamuhtadoon

And they said: “O thou sorcerer: call thou to thy Lord for us by what He has made in covenant with thee — we will be guided!”

## Verse 50

فَلَمَّا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمُ الْعَذَابَ اِذَا هُمْ يَنْكُثُونَ

Falamma kashafna AAanhumualAAathaba itha hum yankuthoon

But when We removed from them the punishment, then they reneged.

## Verse 51

وَنَادٰى فِرْعَوْنُ ف۪ي قَوْمِه۪ قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ اَلَيْسَ ل۪ي مُلْكُ مِصْرَ وَهٰذِهِ الْاَنْهَارُ تَجْر۪ي مِنْ تَحْت۪يۚ اَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَۜ

Wanada firAAawnu fee qawmihi qalaya qawmi alaysa lee mulku misra wahathihial-anharu tajree min tahtee afala tubsiroon

And Pharaoh called to his people, saying: “O my people: is not the dominion of Egypt mine, and these rivers flowing beneath me — do you then not see! —

## Verse 52

اَمْ اَنَا۬ خَيْرٌ مِنْ هٰذَا الَّذ۪ي هُوَ مَه۪ينٌ وَلَا يَكَادُ يُب۪ينُ

Am ana khayrun min hatha allatheehuwa maheenun wala yakadu yubeen

“Or am I better than this, who is despised and barely makes himself clear?

## Verse 53

فَلَوْلَٓا اُلْقِيَ عَلَيْهِ اَسْوِرَةٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ اَوْ جَٓاءَ مَعَهُ الْمَلٰٓئِكَةُ مُقْتَرِن۪ينَ

Falawla olqiya AAalayhi aswiratun minthahabin aw jaa maAAahu almala-ikatumuqtarineen

“Oh, that armlets of gold had but been cast upon him! Or angels had but come with him in conjunction!”

## Verse 54

فَاسْتَخَفَّ قَوْمَهُ فَاَطَاعُوهُۜ اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَوْماً فَاسِق۪ينَ

Fastakhaffa qawmahu faataAAoohuinnahum kanoo qawman fasiqeen

So he swayed his people, and they obeyed him; they were a perfidious people.

## Verse 55

فَلَمَّٓا اٰسَفُونَا انْتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ فَاَغْرَقْنَاهُمْ اَجْمَع۪ينَۙ

Falamma asafoonaintaqamna minhum faaghraqnahum ajmaAAeen

And when they had angered Us, We took vengeance on them and drowned them all together,

فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ سَلَفاً وَمَثَلاً لِلْاٰخِر۪ينَ۟

FajaAAalnahum salafan wamathalan lil-akhireen

And made them a precedent and an example for those who came later.

## Verse 57

وَلَمَّا ضُرِبَ ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ مَثَلاً اِذَا قَوْمُكَ مِنْهُ يَصِدُّونَ

Walamma duriba ibnu maryamamathalan itha qawmuka minhu yasiddoon

And when the son of Mary is struck as a similitude, then thy people clamour thereat,

وَقَالُٓوا ءَاٰلِهَتُنَا خَيْرٌ اَمْ هُوَۜ مَا ضَرَبُوهُ لَكَ اِلَّا جَدَلاًۜ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ خَصِمُونَ

Waqaloo aalihatunakhayrun am huwa ma daraboohu laka illajadalan bal hum qawmun khasimoon

And they say: “Are our gods better or is he?” They strike it for thee only by way of contention. The truth is, they are a contentious people.

## Verse 59

اِنْ هُوَ اِلَّا عَبْدٌ اَنْعَمْنَا عَلَيْهِ وَجَعَلْنَاهُ مَثَلاً لِبَن۪ٓي اِسْرَٓائ۪ـلَۜ

In huwa illa AAabdun anAAamnaAAalayhi wajaAAalnahu mathalan libanee isra-eel

He was only a servant whom We favoured, and We made him an example for the children of Israel.

## Verse 60

وَلَوْ نَشَٓاءُ لَجَعَلْنَا مِنْكُمْ مَلٰٓئِكَةً فِي الْاَرْضِ يَخْلُفُونَ

Walaw nashao lajaAAalna minkummala-ikatan fee al-ardi yakhlufoon

And had We willed, We would have appointed among you angels to be successors in the earth.

وَاِنَّهُ لَعِلْمٌ لِلسَّاعَةِ فَلَا تَمْتَرُنَّ بِهَا وَاتَّبِعُونِۜ هٰذَا صِرَاطٌ مُسْتَق۪يمٌ

Wa-innahu laAAilmun lissaAAatifala tamtarunna biha wattabiAAooni hathasiratun mustaqeem

And it is knowledge pertaining to the Hour; doubt not concerning it, and follow Me. This is a straight path.

وَلَا يَصُدَّنَّكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُۚ اِنَّهُ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُب۪ينٌ

Wala yasuddannakumu ashshaytanuinnahu lakum AAaduwwun mubeen

And let not the satan divert you; he is to you an open enemy.

وَلَمَّا جَٓاءَ ع۪يسٰى بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ قَالَ قَدْ جِئْتُكُمْ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَلِاُبَيِّنَ لَكُمْ بَعْضَ الَّذ۪ي تَخْتَلِفُونَ ف۪يهِۚ فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ وَاَط۪يعُونِ

Walamma jaa AAeesa bilbayyinatiqala qad ji/tukum bilhikmati wali-obayyinalakum baAAda allathee takhtalifoona feehi fattaqooAllaha waateeAAoon

And when Jesus came with the clear signs, he said: “I have come to you with wisdom, and to make plain some of that concerning that wherein you differ; so be in prudent fear of God, and obey me.

اِنَّ اللّٰهَ هُوَ رَبّ۪ي وَرَبُّكُمْ فَاعْبُدُوهُۜ هٰذَا صِرَاطٌ مُسْتَق۪يمٌ

Inna Allaha huwa rabbee warabbukum faAAbudoohuhatha siratun mustaqeem

“God, He is my Lord and your Lord; so serve Him. This is a straight path.”

فَاخْتَلَفَ الْاَحْزَابُ مِنْ بَيْنِهِمْۚ فَوَيْلٌ لِلَّذ۪ينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمٍ اَل۪يمٍ

Fakhtalafa al-ahzabumin baynihim fawaylun lillatheena thalamoomin AAathabi yawmin aleem

Then the parties among them differed; so woe to those who did wrong from the punishment of a painful day!

هَلْ يَنْظُرُونَ اِلَّا السَّاعَةَ اَنْ تَأْتِيَهُمْ بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ

Hal yanthuroona illa assaAAataan ta/tiyahum baghtatan wahum la yashAAuroon

Look they save for the Hour to come upon them unexpectedly when they perceive not!

## Verse 67

اَلْاَخِلَّٓاءُ يَوْمَئِذٍ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ اِلَّا الْمُتَّق۪ينَۜ‌۟

Al-akhillao yawma-ithin baAAduhumlibaAAdin AAaduwwun illa almuttaqeen

Friends, that day, will be enemies to one another save those of prudent fear.

يَا عِبَادِ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْكُمُ الْيَوْمَ وَلَٓا اَنْتُمْ تَحْزَنُونَۚ

“O My servants: you need not fear this day, nor will you grieve!

“Those who believed in Our proofs and were submitting:

اُدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ اَنْتُمْ وَاَزْوَاجُكُمْ تُحْبَرُونَ

“Enter the Garden, you and your wives rejoicing!”

## Verse 71

يُطَافُ عَلَيْهِمْ بِصِحَافٍ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَاَكْوَابٍۚ وَف۪يهَا مَا تَشْتَه۪يهِ الْاَنْفُسُ وَتَلَذُّ الْاَعْيُنُۚ وَاَنْتُمْ ف۪يهَا خَالِدُونَۚ

Yutafu AAalayhim bisihafinmin thahabin waakwabin wafeeha matashtaheehi al-anfusu watalaththu al-aAAyunu waantum feehakhalidoon

— Circulated among them will be plates and cups of gold; and therein is what the souls desire and the eyes delight in — “And therein will you abide eternally.

وَتِلْكَ الْجَنَّةُ الَّت۪ٓي اُو۫رِثْتُمُوهَا بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

Watilka aljannatu allatee oorithtumoohabima kuntum taAAmaloon

“And that is the Garden which you are made to inherit for what you did.

لَكُمْ ف۪يهَا فَاكِهَةٌ  كَث۪يرَةٌ مِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ

Lakum feeha fakihatunkatheeratun minha ta/kuloon

“For you therein is abundant fruit, whereof you will eat.”

اِنَّ الْمُجْرِم۪ينَ ف۪ي عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدُونَۚ

Inna almujrimeena fee AAathabijahannama khalidoon

The lawbreakers in the punishment of Gehenna abide eternally:

لَا يُفَتَّرُ عَنْهُمْ وَهُمْ ف۪يهِ مُبْلِسُونَۚ

La yufattaru AAanhum wahum feehimublisoon

It will not be abated for them, and they are therein in despair;

وَمَا ظَلَمْنَاهُمْ وَلٰكِنْ كَانُوا هُمُ الظَّالِم۪ينَ

Wama thalamnahumwalakin kanoo humu aththalimeen

And We wronged them not, but they were the wrongdoers.

وَنَادَوْا يَا مَالِكُ لِيَقْضِ عَلَيْنَا رَبُّكَۜ قَالَ اِنَّكُمْ مَاكِثُونَ

Wanadaw ya maliku liyaqdiAAalayna rabbuka qala innakum makithoon

And they will call out: “O Mālik: let thy Lord make an end of us!” He will say: “Indeed, you will remain.”

لَقَدْ جِئْنَاكُمْ بِالْحَقِّ وَلٰكِنَّ اَكْثَرَكُمْ لِلْحَقِّ كَارِهُونَ

Laqad ji/nakum bilhaqqiwalakinna aktharakum lilhaqqi karihoon

We have brought you the truth, but most of you are averse to the truth.

اَمْ اَبْرَمُٓوا اَمْراً فَاِنَّا مُبْرِمُونَۚ

Am abramoo amran fa-inna mubrimoon

If they determine any matter: then do We determine.

اَمْ يَحْسَبُونَ اَنَّا لَا نَسْمَعُ سِرَّهُمْ وَنَجْوٰيهُمْۜ  بَلٰى وَرُسُلُنَا لَدَيْهِمْ يَكْتُبُونَ

Am yahsaboona anna lanasmaAAu sirrahum wanajwahum bala warusulunaladayhim yaktuboon

If they think that We cannot hear their secret thought and their private conversation: verily, Our messengers are with them recording.

قُلْ اِنْ كَانَ لِلرَّحْمٰنِ وَلَدٌۗ فَاَنَا۬ اَوَّلُ الْعَابِد۪ينَ

Qul in kana lirrahmaniwaladun faana awwalu alAAabideen

Say thou: “If the Almighty had a son, then would I be first of those who serve.”

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضِ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

Subhana rabbi assamawatiwal-ardi rabbi alAAarshi AAamma yasifoon

Glory be to the Lord of the Heavens and the Earth, the Lord of the Throne, above what they describe!

## Verse 83

فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا وَيَلْعَبُوا حَتّٰى يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذ۪ي يُوعَدُونَ

Fatharhum yakhoodoowayalAAaboo hatta yulaqoo yawmahumu allatheeyooAAadoon

So leave thou them alone to discourse vainly and play until they meet their day which they are promised.

## Verse 84

وَهُوَ الَّذ۪ي فِي السَّمَٓاءِ اِلٰهٌ وَفِي الْاَرْضِ اِلٰهٌۜ وَهُوَ الْحَك۪يمُ الْعَل۪يمُ

Wahuwa allathee fee assama-iilahun wafee al-ardi ilahun wahuwa alhakeemualAAaleem

And He it is who in heaven is God and in earth is God; and He is the Wise, the Knowing.

## Verse 85

وَتَبَارَكَ الَّذ۪ي لَهُ مُلْكُ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَاۚ وَعِنْدَهُ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِۚ وَاِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ

Watabaraka allathee lahu mulkuassamawati wal-ardi wamabaynahuma waAAindahu AAilmu assaAAatiwa-ilayhi turjaAAoon

And blessed be He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and what is between them and with whom is knowledge of the Hour! And to Him will you be returned.

وَلَا يَمْلِكُ الَّذ۪ينَ يَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِهِ الشَّفَاعَةَ اِلَّا مَنْ شَهِدَ بِالْحَقِّ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ

Wala yamliku allatheenayadAAoona min doonihi ashshafaAAata illaman shahida bilhaqqi wahum yaAAlamoon

And those to whom they call, besides Him, possess no intercession save whoso bore witness to the truth, and they know.

## Verse 87

وَلَئِنْ سَاَلْتَهُمْ مَنْ خَلَقَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ اللّٰهُ فَاَنّٰى يُؤْفَكُونَۙ

Wala-in saaltahum man khalaqahumlayaqoolunna Allahu faanna yu/fakoon

And if thou askest them who created them, they will say: “God.” How then are they deluded?

## Verse 88

وَق۪يلِه۪ يَا رَبِّ اِنَّ هٰٓؤُ۬لَٓاءِ قَوْمٌ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَۢ

Waqeelihi ya rabbi inna haola-iqawmun la yu/minoon

And his saying was: “O my Lord: these are a people who do not believe!”

فَاصْفَحْ عَنْهُمْ وَقُلْ سَلَامٌۜ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ

So overlook thou them, and say thou: “Peace!” Then will they come to know!
