" ### Shabbir Ahmed They will say, "Behold, We were kind and humble amidst our families. " ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation They will say: “We were before, among our families, apprehensive, ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation They said: "We used to be compassionate among our people." ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament They will say, "We used to be kind and humble among our people. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Saying: "We were also once full of fear at home. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) They will say, "Indeed, we were previously among our people fearful [of displeasing Allah ]. ### Muhammad Asad They will say: "Behold, aforetime - when we were [still living] in the midst of our kith and kin - we were full of fear [at the thought of God’s dis­pleasure]: ### Marmaduke Pickthall Saying: Lo! of old, when we were with our families, we were ever anxious; ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary They will say: "When we were living before among our kinsfolk we lived in constant fear (of Allah's displeasure).[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, we were not heedless and living a care-free life of ease and comfort, but we were always on our guard lest we should commit an evil for which we may be held accountable before God. Here, the mention of "we were among our people, in fear and dread," in particular, has been made for the reason that man commits evil mostly when he is deeply engrossed in arranging ease and comfort for his children and trying to make their future secure and happy. For the same purpose, he earns forbidden things by forbidden means, usurps the rights of others and makes evil plans. That is why the dwellers of Paradise will say to one another: That which particularly saved us from the evil of the Hereafter was that while living among our families we did not think so much of arranging the pleasures of life and a splendid future for them as for avoiding for their sake those methods and means that might ruin our life in the Hereafter and that we should not lead our children also on to the way that might make them worthy of the torment of Allah. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab "In life 'they add' " as we lived among our own families, we always worried about such things concerning their fortune here and Hereafter, besides taking concern in the foreordained consequences which would naturally attend our undertakings here and Hereafter. ### Bijan Moeinian "While living among our folks, we were not obsessed with accumulating the wealth and our financial security. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Saying: "Aforetime, we were afraid (of the punishment of Allâh) in the midst of our families. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali They will say: "Aforetime, we were not without fear for the sake of our people. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran They will say, "Before ˹this reward˺ we used to be in awe ˹of Allah˺ in the midst of our people. ### Taqi Usmani They will say, "Indeed we were afraid (of Allah’s punishment) when we were amidst our family, ### Abdul Haleem ‘When we were still with our families [on earth] we used to live in fear–– ### Arthur John Arberry They say, 'We were before among our people, ever going in fear, ### E.
