Surah At-Tawbah (The Repentance) — سورة التوبة - **Verse:** 93 / 129 · **Juz:** 10 · **Mushaf page:** 200 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-at-tawbah/verse-93 ## Arabic اِنَّمَا السَّب۪يلُ عَلَى الَّذ۪ينَ يَسْتَأْذِنُونَكَ وَهُمْ اَغْنِيَٓاءُۚ رَضُوا بِاَنْ يَكُونُوا مَعَ الْخَوَالِفِۙ وَطَبَعَ اللّٰهُ عَلٰى قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ## Transcription Innama assabeelu AAalaallatheena yasta/thinoonaka wahum aghniyaoradoo bi-an yakoonoo maAAa alkhawalifi watabaAAaAllahu AAala quloobihim fahum la yaAAlamoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley There are only grounds against those who ask you for permission to stay when they are rich. They were pleased to be among those who were left behind. Allah has sealed up their hearts so they do not know. ### Progressive Muslims Indeed, the argument is against those who sought your permission to stay while they were rich. They accepted to be with those who remained behind, and God stamps their hearts, for they do not know. ### Shabbir Ahmed The way of blame is only against those who ask for your leave when they are rich and able-bodied. They are well pleased to be with those who are obliged to stay behind. They have caused Allah's Law of Requital to seal their hearts without knowing it. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation The path is but against those who ask leave of thee when they are sufficient, content to be with those who remain; and God has sealed their hearts, so they understand not. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation Indeed, the argument is against those who sought your leave while they were rich. They prefer to stay with women who stay at home, and God seals their hearts; so they do not understand. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) The cause [for blame] is only upon those who ask permission of you while they are rich. They are satisfied to be with those who stay behind, and Allah has sealed over their hearts, so they do not know. ### Muhammad Asad Only they may rightly be reproached who asked thee for exemption even though they were fully able [to go to war]. They were well-pleased to remain with those who were left behind -wherefore God has sealed their hearts, so that they do not know [what they are doing]. ### Marmaduke Pickthall The road (of blame) is only against those who ask for leave of thee (to stay at home) when they are rich. They are content to be with the useless. Allah hath sealed their hearts so that they know not. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary [9:93] But there are grounds for reproach against those who seek leave to stay behind even though they are affluent. They are the ones who were content to be with the womenfolk who stay behind. Allah has set a seal on their hearts, leaving them bereft of understanding. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab But the consequence is indeed incurred on those who are rich and yet they make excuses to claim exemption and do not contribute to Allah's cause. Satisfied in mind, they are pleased to remain behind together with the stay-at- home. Allah has impressed their hearts with dullness of comprehension, and therefore, they do not apprehend the voice from Heaven nor can they be provoked to apprehend virtue. They do not know what is true and by consequence do not know what is good. ### Bijan Moeinian As for those who are rich enough to finance their participation in the expedition and still came to you asking your permission to stay behind with women, God has set a seal upon their hearts. Thus, they cannot understand [the repercussion of their cowardice behavior.] ### Al-Hilali & Khan The ground (of complaint) is only against those who are rich, and yet ask exemption.[1] They are content to be with (the women) who sit behind (at home) and Allâh has sealed up their hearts (from all kinds of goodness and right guidance) so that they know not (what they are losing). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali The ground (of complaint) is against such as claim exemption while they are rich. They prefer to stay with the (women) who remain behind: Allah hath sealed their hearts; so they know not (What they miss). ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Blame is only on those who seek exemption from you although they have the means. They preferred to stay behind with the helpless, and Allah has sealed their hearts so they do not realize ˹the consequences˺. ### Taqi Usmani Blame lies, in fact, on those who ask you permission despite being rich. They are happy being with women who sit back. Allah has sealed their hearts; so they do not know. ### Abdul Haleem The ones open to blame are those who asked you for exemption despite their wealth, and who preferred to be with those who stay behind. Onlar, geride kalan kadınlarla beraber olmayı tercih ettiler. Allah da kalplerini mühürledi; artık başlarına geleceği bilmezler. ### Gültekin Onan Yol, ancak o kimseler aleyhinedir ki, zengin oldukları halde (savaşa çıkmamak için) senden izin isterler ve bunlar geride kalanlarla birtikte olmayı seçerler. Tanrı, onların kalplerini mühürlemiştir. Bundan dolayı onlar bilmezler. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim (Muahazeye) yol ancak o kimselerdir ki zengin oldukları halde (yurdlarında kalmak için) senden izin isterler. Bunlar geri kalanlarla beraber olmıya rızaa gösterdiler. Allah da kalblerini mühürledi. Artık onlar (akıbetlerindeki acılığı) bilmezler. ### İbni Kesir Sorumluluk ancak, zengin oldukları halde senden izin isteyen, geride kalan kadınlarla bulunmaya razı olanlara ve Allah kalblerini mühürlemiş olduğu için bilmeyenleredir. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Yalnızca, (savaşa katılmak için) her bakımdan müsait ve varlıklı oldukları halde senden (katılmamak yönünde) izin isteyenler haklı olarak kınanıp sorumlu tutulabilir.
