Surah At-Tahrim (The Prohibition) — سورة التحريم - **Verse:** 4 / 12 · **Juz:** 28 · **Mushaf page:** 559 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-at-tahrim/verse-4 ## Arabic اِنْ تَتُوبَٓا اِلَى اللّٰهِ فَقَدْ صَغَتْ قُلُوبُكُمَاۚ وَاِنْ تَظَاهَرَا عَلَيْهِ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ هُوَ مَوْلٰيهُ وَجِبْر۪يلُ وَصَالِـحُ الْمُؤْمِن۪ينَۚ وَالْمَلٰٓئِكَةُ بَعْدَ ذٰلِكَ ظَه۪يرٌ ## Transcription In tatooba ila Allahifaqad saghat quloobukuma wa-in tathaharaAAalayhi fa-inna Allaha huwa mawlahu wajibreelu wasalihualmu/mineena walmala-ikatu baAAda thalika thaheer ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley If the two of you would only turn to Allah, for your hearts clearly deviated. . . But if you support one another against him, Allah is his Protector and so are Jibril and every right-acting man of the muminun and, furthermore, the angels too will come to his support. ### Progressive Muslims If the two of you repent to God, then your hearts have listened. But if you band together against him, then God is his ally, and so are Gabriel and the righteous believers. Also, the Angels are his helpers. ### Shabbir Ahmed If you two turn in repentance to Allah, (it shall be good for you) since your hearts had deviated. But if you back up each other against him (in divulging family matters), then, behold, Allah is with him, and so is Gabriel (who brings the Revelation), and the righteous believers. Also angels are his helpers. ('Angels' here denotes perseverance, restraint, courage, resolve, contentment (3;126), (8:9), (9:26), (33:56)). But if you cooperate against him - then indeed Allah is his protector, and Gabriel and the righteous of the believers and the angels, moreover, are [his] assistants. ### Muhammad Asad [Say, O Prophet:] "Would that you two turn unto God in repentance, for the hearts of both of you have swerved [from what is right]! And if you uphold each other against him [who is God's message-bearer, know that] God Himself is his Protector, and [that,] therefore, Gabriel, and all the righteous among the believers and all the [other] angels will come to his aid. " ### Marmaduke Pickthall If ye twain turn unto Allah repentant, (ye have cause to do so) for your hearts desired (the ban); and if ye aid one another against him (Muhammad) then lo! Allah, even He, is his Protecting Friend, and Gabriel and the righteous among the believers; and furthermore the angels are his helpers. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary If the two of you turn in repentance to Allah (that is better for you), for the hearts of both of you have swerved from the Straight Path.[1] But if you support one another against the Prophet,[2] then surely Allah is his Protector; and after that Gabriel and all righteous believers and the angels are all his supporters.[3] _Footnotes_ - [1] The word saghat in the original is from saghy which means to swerve and to become crooked. Shah Waliyullah and Shah Rafiuddin have translated this sentence thus: Crooked have become your hearts. Abdullah bin Masud, Abdullah bin Abbas, Sufyan Thauri and Dahhak have given this meaning of it: Your hearts have swerved from the right path. Imam Razi explains it thus: Your hearts have swerved from what is right, and the right implies the right of the Prophet (peace be upon him). And Allama Alusis commentary is although it is incumbent on you that you should approve what the Messenger (peace be upon him) approves and disapprove what he disapproves, yet in this matter your hearts have swerved from conformity with him and turned in opposition to him. - [2] The word tazahur means to cooperate mutually in opposition to another person, or to be united against another person. Shah Waliyullah has translated this sentence, thus: If you mutually join together to cause distress to the Prophet. Shah Abdul Qadir’s translation is: If you both overwhelm him. Ashraf Ali Thanwi’s translation says: And if you both continued to work thus against the Prophet. And Shabbir Ahmad Uthmami has explained it thus: If you two continued to work and behave thus (against the Prophet, peace be upon him). - [3] The verse is clearly addressed to two ladies and the context shows that these ladies are from among the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) for in( verses 1-5 of this Surah )the affairs concerning the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) wives only have been discussed continuously, and this becomes obvious from the style of the Quran itself. As for the question who were the wives, and what was the matter which caused Allah’s displeasure, the details are found in the Hadith. In Musnad Ahmad, Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi and Nasai, a detailed tradition of Abdullah bin Abbas has been related, which describes the incident with some variation in wording. Ibn Abbas says: ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab "If both of you change your minds with regard to past action and conduct and feel contrition and keep Allah in mind, then you have indeed opened your hearts' ears". " And if you challenge him and his wisdom then you must know that Allah, is his tutelary protector and so are the Spirit Gibril (Gabriel) and the pious among the believers, and moreover the angels support him and form his back". ### Bijan Moeinian If you, two wives of Mohammad (Aysha & Hafash), return to God (as you are already inclined to do so) to ask forgiveness from your Lord for "conspiracy" behind your husband, it will be the best for you. If you, on the contrary, back up each other against your husband, then you are against God, angle Gabriel, the righteous believers and the angles who help the messenger of God. ### Al-Hilali & Khan If you two (wives of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم : ‘Âishah and Hafsah رضي الله عنهما) turn in repentance to Allâh, (it will be better for you), your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم likes); but if you help one another against him (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), then verily, Allâh is his Maulâ (Lord, or Master, or Protector), and Jibrîl (Gabriel), and the righteous among the believers; and furthermore, the angels are his helpers. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali If ye two turn in repentance to Him, your hearts are indeed so inclined; But if ye back up each other against him, truly Allah is his Protector, and Gabriel, and (every) righteous one among those who believe,- and furthermore, the angels - will back (him) up. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran ˹It will be better˺ if you ˹wives˺ both turn to Allah in repentance, for your hearts have certainly faltered. But if you ˹continue to˺ collaborate against him, then ˹know that˺ Allah Himself is his Guardian. And Gabriel, the righteous believers, and the angels are ˹all˺ his supporters as well. ### Taqi Usmani (O two wives of the Prophet,) If both of you repent to Allah, then (your conduct calls for it, because) your hearts have departed from the correct way. And if you back each other against him (the Prophet), then Allah is his supporter, and Jibra’īl (Gabriel) and righteous believers, and after all that, angels are his helpers. ### Abdul Haleem If both of you [wives] repent to God––for your hearts have deviated––[all will be well]; if you collaborate against him, [be warned that] God will aid him, as will Gabriel and all righteous believers, and the angels too will back him. ### Arthur John Arberry If you two repent to God, yet your hearts certainly inclined; but if you support one another against him, God is his Protector, and Gabriel, and the righteous among the believers; and, after that, the angels are his supporters. ### E.
