Surah At-Taghabun (Mutual Disillusion) — سورة التغابن - **Verse:** 16 / 18 · **Juz:** 28 · **Mushaf page:** 556 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-at-taghabun/verse-16 ## Arabic فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ وَاسْمَعُوا وَاَط۪يعُوا وَاَنْفِقُوا خَيْراً لِاَنْفُسِكُمْۜ وَمَنْ يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِه۪ فَاُو۬لٰٓئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ ## Transcription Fattaqoo Allaha maistataAAtum wasmaAAoo waateeAAoo waanfiqookhayran li-anfusikum waman yooqa shuhha nafsihi faola-ikahumu almuflihoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley So have taqwa of Allah, as much as you are able to, and listen and obey and spend for your own benefit. It is the people who are safe-guarded from the avarice of their own selves who are successful. ### Progressive Muslims Therefore, be aware of God as much as you can, and listen, and obey, and give for your own good. And whosoever is protected from his own stinginess, then these are the successful ones. ### Shabbir Ahmed So be mindful of Allah as best as you can. And listen, and obey, and spend on others (your wealth and person). That is good for your own 'Selves'. For, any who is protected from his own greediness - it is they, they who are truly successful. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation So be in prudent fear of God as much as you are able, and listen, and obey, and spend; it is better for your souls. Anyone who is protected from his own stinginess, these are the successful ones. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira So fear God as much as you can, and listen and obey, and spend in charity for your own good. He who is saved from his own avarice will be successful. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah ]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful. ### Muhammad Asad Remain, then, conscious of God as best you can, and listen [to Him], and pay heed. And spend in charity for the good of your own selves: for, such as from their own covetousness are saved – it is they, they that shall attain to a happy state! ### Marmaduke Pickthall So keep your duty to Allah as best ye can, and listen, and obey, and spend; that is better for your souls. And whoso is saved from his own greed, such are the successful. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary So hold Allah in awe as much as you can,[1] and listen and obey, and be charitable. This is for your own good. And whoever remains safe from his own greediness, it is such that will prosper.[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] At another place in the Quran it has been said: Fear Allah as rightfully He should be feared. (Surah Aal-Imran, Ayat 102). At still another place: Allah does not burden any one with a responsibility heavier than he can bear. (Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayat 286) And here: Fear Allah as much as you can. When these three verses are read together it appears that the first verse sets an ideal which every believer should try to attain. The second verse lays down the principle that no one has been required to exert himself beyond his power and ability, for in Allah’s religion one has been made responsible only for what is within his power and ability. This verse enjoins every believer to try to attain piety and consciousness of God as far as he can. He should carry out His commands and avoid His disobedience as best as he possibly can. For if he shows laxity in this regard, he will not be able to escape punishment. However, one will not be held accountable for what was beyond his power and Allah alone can decide best what was really beyond a person’s power and ability. - [2] For explanation, see (E.N. 19 of Surah Al-Hashr). ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Therefore, entertain the profound reverence dutiful to Allah to the best and open your hearts' ears to what Allah and His Messenger relate to you, and de not deviate from the path of righteousness, and spend of your wealth in benefaction and in benevolence for your own good. And he who resists the incitement arising from the state of mind and feeling and guards himself against an unjust act and impiety, inequity and greed, niggardliness and immorality and such vices, shall heaven prosper him and such persons. ### Bijan Moeinian Therefore, keep God in your mind as much as you can. Listen and obey your Lord. Spend your wealth in charity to please God; this is for your own good. Anyone who overcomes his stinginess is truly a successful one. ### Al-Hilali & Khan So keep your duty to Allâh and fear Him as much as you can; listen and obey, and spend in charity; that is better for yourselves. And whosoever is saved from his own covetousness, then they are the successful ones. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali So fear Allah as much as ye can; listen and obey and spend in charity for the benefit of your own soul and those saved from the covetousness of their own souls,- they are the ones that achieve prosperity. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran So be mindful of Allah to the best of your ability, hear and obey, and spend in charity—that will be best for you. And whoever is saved from the selfishness of their own souls, it is they who are ˹truly˺ successful. ### Taqi Usmani So, observe taqwā (total obedience to Allah in awe of Him) as far as you can, and listen and obey, and spend (in Allah’s way), it being good for you. And those who are saved from the greed of their hearts are the successful. ### Abdul Haleem be mindful of God as much as you can; hear and obey; be charitable- it is for your own good. Those who are saved from their own meanness will be the prosperous ones: ### Arthur John Arberry So fear God as far as you are able, and give ear, and obey, and expend well for yourselves.
