Surah Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) — سورة الشعراء - **Verse:** 49 / 227 · **Juz:** 19 · **Mushaf page:** 368 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ash-shuara/verse-49 ## Arabic قَالَ اٰمَنْتُمْ لَهُ قَبْلَ اَنْ اٰذَنَ لَكُمْۚ اِنَّهُ لَكَب۪يرُكُمُ الَّذ۪ي عَلَّمَكُمُ السِّحْرَۚ فَلَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَۜ لَاُقَطِّعَنَّ اَيْدِيَكُمْ وَاَرْجُلَكُمْ مِنْ خِلَافٍ وَلَاُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ اَجْمَع۪ينَ ## Transcription Qala amantum lahu qabla an athanalakum innahu lakabeerukumu allathee AAallamakumu assihrafalasawfa taAAlamoona laoqattiAAanna aydiyakum waarjulakummin khilafin walaosallibannakum ajmaAAeen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley He said, ‘Have you had iman in him before I authorised you? He is your chief who taught you magic. But you will soon know! I will cut off your alternate hands and feet and I will crucify every one of you.’ ### Progressive Muslims He said: "Have you believed to him before I permitted you He is surely your great one who has taught you magic. So you shall come to know. I will cut-off your hands and feet from alternate sides, and I will crucify you all." ### Shabbir Ahmed Pharaoh said, "You believe in him before I grant my permission? He is surely your chief who has taught you spellbinding eloquence. You shall find out soon. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic, but you are going to know. I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you all." ### Muhammad Asad Said [Pharaoh]: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Verily, he must be your master who has taught you magic! But in time you shall come to know [my revenge]: most certainly shall I cut off your hands and your feet in great numbers, because of [your] perverseness, and shall most certainly crucify you in great numbers, all together!" ### Marmaduke Pickthall (Pharaoh) said: Ye put your faith in him before I give you leave. Lo! he doubtless is your chief who taught you magic! But verily ye shall come to know. Verily I will cut off your hands and your feet alternately, and verily I will crucify you every one. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Pharaoh said: "You accepted the word of Moses even before I granted you the leave to do so. Surely he is your chief who has taught you magic.[1] Soon shall you come to know. I shall cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides and shall crucify all of you."[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] This only shows the extreme obstinacy and obduracy of Pharaoh, who even after witnessing a clear miracle and the testimony of the magicians on it, was still insisting that it was magic. But according to(Surah Al-Aaraf, Ayat 123), Pharaoh said: Indeed it was a plot you conspired in the capital to deprive the rightful owners of their power. Thus he tried to make the people believe that the magicians had yielded to Moses (peace be upon him) not because of the miracle but due to a conspiracy with Moses (peace be upon him) before they entered the contest, so that they might seize political power and enjoy its fruits together. - [2] This horrible threat was held out by Pharaoh to justify his thinking that the magicians had entered a conspiracy with Moses (peace be upon him). He thought that the magicians, in order to save their lives, would confess the plot and thus the effect produced by their falling prostrate and believing in Moses (peace be upon him) in front of thousands of spectators would be gone. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And here said Pharaoh to them: "Have you yielded to his claims and surrendered yourselves to his Ilah without my permission!" "This is indeed, " he added, a deceitful plan designed by your master who taught you magic and you shall bear the consequences and soon come to know how heavily you shall pay for this!" "I will amputate your hands and your feet on opposite sides and I will have you all crucified. " ### Bijan Moeinian Pharaoh said: "How dare you to believe in Moses before getting permission from me? Now I see; he is your master and has taught you the art of magic. You will surely find out when I cut your hands and feet on alternate sides. I will crucify you all." ### Al-Hilali & Khan [Fir‘aun (Pharaoh)] said: "You have believed in him before I give you leave. Surely, he indeed is your chief, who has taught you magic! So verily, you shall come to know. Verily, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all." ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Said (Pharaoh): "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? surely he is your leader, who has taught you sorcery! but soon shall ye know! Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross!" ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Pharaoh threatened, "How dare you believe in him before I give you permission? He must be your master who taught you magic, but soon you will see. I will certainly cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, then crucify you all." ### Taqi Usmani He (Pharaoh) said, "You have believed in him before I permit you. Surely, he (Mūsā) is the chief of you all, who has taught you sorcery. So you will soon know (your fate). Indeed he is your chief, the same who taught you sorcery. So you will soon know (your horrible end). He is indeed your chief who has taught you magic! Soon you will surely know!
