Surah Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) — سورة الشعراء - **Verse:** 139 / 227 · **Juz:** 19 · **Mushaf page:** 372 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ash-shuara/verse-139 ## Arabic فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَاَهْلَكْنَاهُمْۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَةًۜ وَمَا كَانَ اَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِن۪ينَ ## Transcription Fakaththaboohu faahlaknahuminna fee thalika laayatan wama kanaaktharuhum mu/mineen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley So they denied him and We destroyed them. There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun. ### Progressive Muslims So they denied him, and We destroyed them. In that is a sign, but most are not believers. ### Shabbir Ahmed So, they rejected him and We destroyed them. Therein, behold, is a sign, even though most people are not believers (in the Law of Requital). ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And they denied him, then We destroyed them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Eventually they gave the lie to him and We destroyed them.[1] Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. _Footnotes_ - [1] According to the Quran, the people of Aad were destroyed by a violent windstorm. When they saw it advancing towards their valleys, they rejoiced with the hope that those were dense clouds which would bring much rain for them, but in reality it was Allah’s scourge. The windstorm continued to rage for eight days and seven nights and destroyed everything. The people were swept away like straw and everything on which the hot, dry wind blew was left rotting. The storm did not abate until the last man of the wicked tribe had met his doom. Only ruins of their habitations remained to tell the tale of their terrible fate, and today even the ruins have become extinct. The whole territory of Ahqaf has turned into dreadful desert dunes. For details, see(E.N. 25 of Surah Al-Ahqaf). ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And they disbelieved him and refused credence to Our message wherefore We reduced them to a useless form. This is indeed emblematic of Allah's Omnipotence and Authority, but most of them denied Allah Who brought them into existence. ### Bijan Moeinian They chose to disbelieve and, consequently, I destroyed them as a punishment. This should be a great lesson; yet most people care less. ### Al-Hilali & Khan So they belied him, and We destroyed them.
