# 91. Surah Ash-Shams

_In the name of God, the Almighty, the Merciful._

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّح۪يمِ

## Verse 1

وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحٰيهَاۙۖ

Washshamsi waduhaha

By the sun and its morning brightness!

## Verse 2

وَالْقَمَرِ اِذَا تَلٰيهَاۙۖ

Walqamari itha talaha

And by the moon when it follows it!

## Verse 3

وَالنَّهَارِ اِذَا جَلّٰيهَاۙۖ

Wannahari itha jallaha

And by the day when it reveals it!

## Verse 4

وَالَّيْلِ اِذَا يَغْشٰيهَاۙۖ

Wallayli itha yaghshaha

And by the night when it covers it!

## Verse 5

وَالسَّمَٓاءِ وَمَا بَنٰيهَاۙۖ

Wassama-i wama banaha

And by the sky and Him that built it!

## Verse 6

وَالْاَرْضِ وَمَا طَحٰيهَاۙۖ

Wal-ardi wama tahaha

And by the earth and Him that extended it!

## Verse 7

وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوّٰيهَاۙۖ

Wanafsin wama sawwaha

And by a soul and Him that fashioned it,

## Verse 8

فَاَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوٰيهَاۙۖ

Faalhamaha fujooraha wataqwaha

And inspired it with its immorality and its prudent fear!

## Verse 9

قَدْ اَفْلَحَ مَنْ زَكّٰيهَاۙۖ

Qad aflaha man zakkaha

He has succeeded who increased it in purity,

## Verse 10

وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ دَسّٰيهَاۜ

Waqad khaba man dassaha

And he has failed who buried it

## Verse 11

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوٰيهَاۙۖ

Kaththabat thamoodu bitaghwaha

(Thamūd denied in its transgression

## Verse 12

اِذِ انْبَعَثَ اَشْقٰيهَاۙۖ

Ithi inbaAAatha ashqaha

When its most wretched was sent forth.

## Verse 13

فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللّٰهِ نَاقَةَ اللّٰهِ وَسُقْيٰيهَا۠

Faqala lahum rasoolu Allahi naqataAllahi wasuqyaha

The messenger of God said to them: “The she-camel of God — let her drink.”

## Verse 14

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَاۙۖ فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ بِذَنْبِهِمْ فَسَوّٰيهَاۙۖ

Fakaththaboohu faAAaqaroohafadamdama AAalayhim rabbuhum bithanbihim fasawwaha

Then they denied him, and hamstrung her; and their Lord destroyed them for their transgression, and He levelled them.)

## Verse 15

وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبٰيهَا

Wala yakhafu AAuqbaha

And fears not its final outcome.
