Surah As-Sajdah (The Prostration) — سورة السجدة - **Verse:** 16 / 30 · **Juz:** 21 · **Mushaf page:** 415 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-as-sajdah/verse-16 ## Arabic تَتَجَافٰى جُنُوبُهُمْ عَنِ الْمَضَاجِعِ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ خَوْفاً وَطَمَعاًۘ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنْفِقُونَ ## Transcription Tatajafa junoobuhum AAani almadajiAAiyadAAoona rabbahum khawfan watamaAAan wamimmarazaqnahum yunfiqoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Their sides eschew their beds as they call on their Lord in fear and ardent hope. And they give of what We have provided for them. ### Progressive Muslims Their sides readily forsake their beds, to call on their Lord out of fear and hope, and from Our provisions to them they give. ### Shabbir Ahmed They forsake their 'comfort zone' in calling people to their Lord, fearing that they have not done enough and hoping to do better. And they keep open for the needy the provision that We have given them. They are not like the worldworshipers, who seek entertainments in music and dancing, drinking and merry-making, in the night in order to get relief from the day’s fatigue and labor and toil. Instead, when they are free from their day’s work and duties, they devote themselves to the adoration of their Lord, spend their nights in His remembrance, tremble out of fear of Him, and pin all their hopes on Him. "Who forsake their beds" does not mean that they do not sleep at all at night, but that they spend a part of the night in Allah’s worship. - [2] In the original, rizq means lawful provisions. Unlawful provisions have nowhere been called rizq by Allah. The verse therefore means: They spend from whatever little or much of pure provisions We have given to them; they do not overspend and do not grab unlawful wealth in order to meet their expenses. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Their sides desert the beds for nocturnal devotion in exchange for Allah's mercy and blessings: They prostrate their reason to divine revelation and they make invocation unto Him by comely prostration of their bodies, which act reflects dread that is mingled with veneration and reflects hope that springs eternal in their bosoms for His pitiful forbearance toward them, and they spend in benevolence of Our grace that was made to abound in them. ### Bijan Moeinian The true believers are those who sacrifice a part of their sleeping time to worship their Lord. They are afraid to offend their Lord with [the least of] their action and hope in getting their rewards from Him. They are the one who devote a part of their resources [which is given to them by God at first place] to God pleasing ends. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Their sides forsake their beds, to invoke their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend (in charity in Allâh’s Cause) out of what We have bestowed on them.[1] ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Their limbs do forsake their beds of sleep, the while they call on their Lord, in Fear and Hope: and they spend (in charity) out of the sustenance which We have bestowed on them. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran They abandon their beds, invoking their Lord with hope and fear, and donate from what We have provided for them. ### Taqi Usmani Their sides remain apart from their beds.
