Surah As-Saf (The Ranks) — سورة الصف - **Verse:** 8 / 14 · **Juz:** 28 · **Mushaf page:** 551 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-as-saf/verse-8 ## Arabic يُر۪يدُونَ لِيُطْفِؤُ۫ا نُورَ اللّٰهِ بِاَفْوَاهِهِمْ وَاللّٰهُ مُتِمُّ نُورِه۪ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْـكَافِرُونَ ## Transcription Yureedoona liyutfi-oo noora Allahibi-afwahihim wallahu mutimmu noorihi walawkariha alkafiroon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley They desire to extinguish Allah’s Light with their mouths but Allah will perfect His Light, though the kafirun hate it. ### Progressive Muslims They wish to put out God's light with their mouths. But God will continue with His light, even if the rejecters dislike it. ### Shabbir Ahmed They aim to put out Allah's Light with their mouths (utterances), but Allah has willed to spread His Light in all its fullness, however hateful this may be to the deniers of the Truth. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation They want to extinguish the light of God with their mouths; but God will perfect His light, though the false claimers of guidance be averse. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation They want to extinguish the light of God with their mouths. But God will continue with His light, even if the rejecters hate it. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament They wish to put out GOD's light with their mouths. But GOD insists upon perfecting His light, in spite of the disbelievers. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira They want to extinguish the light of God by uttering blasphemies. But God wills to perfect His light, however the unbelievers may dislike it. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) They want to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it. ### Muhammad Asad They aim to extinguish God's light with their utterances: but God has willed to spread His light in all its fullness, however hateful this may be to all who deny the truth ### Marmaduke Pickthall Fain would they put out the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light however much the disbelievers are averse. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary They seek to extinguish Allah's light (by blowing) with their mouths, but Allah shall spread His light in all its fullness, howsoever the unbelievers may abhor this.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] One should bear in mind that these verses were sent down in A.H. 3 after the Battle of Uhud, when Islam was confined only to the city of Al-Madinah, the Muslims were only a few thousands in number, and entire Arabia was bent upon wiping out this religion. The defeat that the Muslims had suffered at Uhud, had sullied their image of power and the tribes of the surrounding areas had been emboldened. Under such conditions it was said: No one will succeed in blowing out this light of Allah, but it will shine forth and spread throughout the world. This was a clear prediction which literally came true. Who could know except Allah at that time of what was the future of Islam? Human eyes could only see that it was a flickering candle and violent winds were blowing to put it out forever. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab They wish they could, with all the feeling in their minds directed toward falsifying the truth, quench the very light of Allah by word of mouth, (that is by propagating false rumours and uttering error against Him). But Allah shall continue to send His illumination -the Quran- which proceeds from Him until the souls have been lit by the divine truth and enlightenment has prevailed albeit this is hateful to those who refuse to acknowledge the truth. ### Bijan Moeinian The disbelievers will be the most content to see the "Light of God" is being turned off by their words. What they do not realize is that the “Light of God” will keep shining in spit of the fact that the disbelievers resent it. ### Al-Hilali & Khan They intend to put out the Light of Allâh (i.e. the Religion of Islâm, this Qur’ân, and the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) with their mouths. But Allâh will bring His Light to perfection even though the disbelievers hate (it). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Their intention is to extinguish Allah's Light (by blowing) with their mouths: But Allah will complete (the revelation of) His Light, even though the Unbelievers may detest (it). ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran They wish to extinguish Allah’s light with their mouths, but Allah will ˹certainly˺ perfect His light, even to the dismay of the disbelievers. ### Taqi Usmani They wish to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah is to perfect His light, even though the disbelievers dislike (it). ### Abdul Haleem they wish to put His light out with their mouths. But He will perfect His light, even though the disbelievers hate it; ### Arthur John Arberry They desire to extinguish with their mouths, the light of God; but God will perfect His light, though the unbelievers be averse. ### E. Henry Palmer They desire to put out the light of God with their mouths; but God will perfect His light, averse although the misbeliever be! ### Hamid S. Aziz They desire to put out the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light, though the unbelievers may be averse. ### Mahmoud Ghali They would (like) to extinguish the Light of Allah with their mouths; and Allah is perfecting His Light even though the disbelievers hate (that) ### George Sale They seek to extinguish God's light with their mouths: But God will perfect his light, though the infidels be averse thereto. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed Their intention is to darken Allah’s Light (by bellowing) with their mouths: But Allah will complete (brightening) His Light. Even though the unbelievers may dislike (it). ### Amatul Rahman Omar They desire to extinguish the light of Allâh with (the breath of) their mouths. But Allâh will perfect His light even though the disbelievers consider it hard. ### Ali Quli Qarai They desire to put out the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah shall perfect His light though the faithless should be averse. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü Allah nurunu (ilmini) ağızlarıyla (boş lafla) söndürmek istiyorlar! Oysa Allah, nurunun tamamlayıcısıdır! Velev ki hakikat bilgisini inkar edenler hoşlanmasa! ### Ali Bulaç — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Türkçe Anlamı Onlar, Allah'ın nurunu ağızlarıyla söndürmek istiyorlar. Oysa Tanrı, kendi nurunu tamamlayıcıdır; kafirler hoş görmese bile. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Onlar ağızlariyle Allahın nuurunu söndürmiye yelleniyorlar. Halbuki Allah, kendi nuurunu (bizzat) tamamlayıcıdır, kafirler hoş görmese de. ### İbni Kesir Onlar, Allah'ın nurunu ağızlarıyla söndürmek isterler.
