Surah Ar-Rum (The Romans) — سورة الروم - **Verse:** 55 / 60 · **Juz:** 21 · **Mushaf page:** 409 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ar-rum/verse-55 ## Arabic وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ يُقْسِمُ الْمُجْرِمُونَۙ مَا لَبِثُوا غَيْرَ سَاعَةٍۜ كَذٰلِكَ كَانُوا يُؤْفَكُونَ ## Transcription Wayawma taqoomu assaAAatuyuqsimu almujrimoona ma labithoo ghayra saAAatin kathalikakanoo yu/fakoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley On the Day the Last Hour arrives, the evildoers will swear they have not even tarried for an hour. That is the extent to which they are deceived. ### Progressive Muslims And the Day the Hour is established, the criminals will swear that they have remained only for an hour! Thus they were deluded. ### Shabbir Ahmed (Since your life is short, your time is precious. ) On the Day when the Hour rises, the guilty will swear that they lived in this world no more than an hour, (and that they didn't have time to reform). Thus they were deluded. ### Muhammad Asad [He it is who will cause you to die, and in time will resurrect you. ] And when the Last Hour dawns, those who had been lost in sin will swear that they had not tarried [on earth] longer than an hour: thus were they wont to delude themselves [all their lives]! ### Marmaduke Pickthall And on the day when the Hour riseth the guilty will vow that they did tarry but an hour - thus were they ever deceived. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary On that Day when the Hour will come to pass[1] the wicked shall swear that they had stayed (in the world) no more than an hour.[2] Thus they used to be deceived in the life of the world.[3] _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, Resurrection, which is being foretold here. - [2] That is, from the time of death till Resurrection. Even if thousands of years might have elapsed since their death they will feel that they had gone to sleep a few hours earlier and then a sudden calamity had roused them from sleep. - [3] That is, "They used to make similar wrong estimates in the world. There also they lacked the realization of reality, and therefore, used to assert that there was going to be no Resurrection, no life-after-death, and no accountability before God." ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And the Day when the Final Hour has come to pass, the wicked steeped in crime shall swear they only reposed for an hour. And just as they shall make the wrong estimate of time, similarly they will have done in life, they wrongly estimate the truth and they favour declination from religion. ### Bijan Moeinian When man is resurrected, the wrongdoers swear that their whole life was not more than an hour long! For the same token, they were wrong in other perceptions of theirs [about other matters that they used to deny as they did not have any understanding of what the truth is all about. ] ### Al-Hilali & Khan And on the Day that the Hour will be established, the Mujrimûn (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners) will swear that they stayed not but an hour - thus were they ever deluded [away from the truth (i.e. they used to tell lies and take false oaths, and turn away from the truth) in this life of the world)] ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali On the Day that the Hour (of Reckoning) will be established, the transgressors will swear that they tarried not but an hour: thus were they used to being deluded! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran And on the Day the Hour will arrive, the wicked will swear that they did not stay ˹in this world˺ more than an hour.
