Surah Ar-Rum (The Romans) — سورة الروم - **Verse:** 36 / 60 · **Juz:** 21 · **Mushaf page:** 407 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ar-rum/verse-36 ## Arabic وَاِذَٓا اَذَقْنَا النَّاسَ رَحْمَةً فَرِحُوا بِهَاۜ وَاِنْ تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّئَةٌ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ اَيْد۪يهِمْ اِذَا هُمْ يَقْنَطُونَ ## Transcription Watha athaqna annasarahmatan farihoo biha wa-in tusibhumsayyi-atun bima qaddamat aydeehim itha hum yaqnatoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley When We give people a taste of mercy, they rejoice in it, but when something bad happens to them because of what they themselves have done, they immediately lose all hope. ### Progressive Muslims And if We grant the people a taste of mercy, they become happy with it, but if evil afflicts them for what they have done, they become in despair! ### Shabbir Ahmed And thus it is: When We let people taste Grace they are quick to rejoice therein. But when adversity befalls them as a result of their own works - behold, they are in despair! In this verse, he has been censured for puerility and meanness. When a person attains a little wealth and power and respect, and he sees that his business has started flourishing, he forgets that he has been given all this by Allah. He exults at his success and is so puffed up and conceited that he has neither any regard left for Allah nor for the people. But as soon as good luck deserts him, he loses heart and a single stroke of ill-luck so disheartens and frustrates him that he is prepared to do any mean thing, even commit suicide. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And should We extend to people Our mercy and make them taste benediction they rejoice beyond a common joy and if they happen to meet with a misfortune as a result of what their wrongful and unclean hands have committed they nurse despair. ### Bijan Moeinian When I shower people with some favor, they welcome and enjoy it.
