Surah Ar-Rum (The Romans) — سورة الروم - **Verse:** 24 / 60 · **Juz:** 21 · **Mushaf page:** 405 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ar-rum/verse-24 ## Arabic وَمِنْ اٰيَاتِه۪ يُر۪يكُمُ الْبَرْقَ خَوْفاً وَطَمَعاً وَيُنَزِّلُ مِنَ السَّمَٓاءِ مَٓاءً فَيُحْـي۪ بِهِ الْاَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَاۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ ## Transcription Wamin ayatihi yureekumualbarqa khawfan watamaAAan wayunazzilu mina assama-imaan fayuhyee bihi al-arda baAAda mawtihainna fee thalika laayatin liqawminyaAAqiloon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Among His Signs is that He shows you lightning, a source of fear and eager hope, and sends down water from the sky, bringing the dead earth back to life by it. There are indeed signs in this for those who have sense. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And of His signs is [that] He shows you the lightening [causing] fear and aspiration, and He sends down rain from the sky by which He brings to life the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed in that are signs for a people who use reason. ### Muhammad Asad And among His wonders is this: He displays before you the lightning, giving rise to [both] fear and hope, and sends down water from the skies, giving life thereby to the earth after it had been lifeless: in this, behold, there are messages indeed for people who use their reason! ### Marmaduke Pickthall And of His signs is this: He showeth you the lightning for a fear and for a hope, and sendeth down water from the sky, and thereby quickeneth the earth after her death. Lo! herein indeed are portents for folk who understand. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary And of His Signs is that He shows you lightning, arousing both fear and hope,[1] and sends down water from the sky and revives the earth after it is dead.[2] Indeed there are Signs in this for those who use their reason. _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, its thunder and lightning give hope that rain will come and help the crops, but at the same time they cause a fear that the lightning may strike somewhere, or heavy rain may fall, which may wash away everything. - [2] This thing, on the one hand, points to the life Hereafter, and on the other, proves that God exists, and there is One God alone, Who is controlling the earth and the heavens. Innumerable creatures of the earth live on the products that come out from the earth. These products depend on the productivity of the earth. The productivity depends on the rain, whether it directly falls on the earth, or its water gathers together on the surface of the earth, or takes the form of underground water channels or springs or wells, or freezes on the mountains and then flows down in the form of rivers. Then the rain depends on the heat of the sun, the change of seasons, atmospheric changes in temperature, circulation of the winds, and on the lightning, which causes the rain to fall as well as mixes a kind of natural manure in the rainwater. The establishment of a harmony and proportion between different things existing from the earth to the sky, their becoming favorable and subservient to a variety of aims and objects, and their remaining continuously and constantly favorable in perfect harmony for millions of million years cannot be the product of mere chance. Has it all happened without the all-embracing will and plan and wisdom of a Fashioner and Designer? And is it not a proof of the fact that the Creator and Lord of the earth, the sun, the water, the heat and coolness is One and only One? ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And among His marvels is that He exhibits to view lightening or the electrical discharges between groups of clouds and between the clouds and the ground -mountains- which actuate you with the feeling of fear -might bring you suffering, strike you dead or engender a cyclonic storm and with the feeling of hope- of rainfalls to revive the land which has been pined with drought- And from the floor of the vault of heaven He sends water reviving the earth after it had suffered death. All precepts concerning Allah's Omnipotence and Authority are in effect comprehended in these signs by those who exercise sound judgment and have the ability to perceive and adopt the best means for accomplishing an end and who are characterized by good sense and prudence. ### Bijan Moeinian Another sign [denoting the existence of God] is the lightening that makes you fear [of being struck with or wood fires] and, at the same time, hope [for a better harvest. ] God is the One Who pours down water from the sky to revive the land after its death. In this too there are many lessons to be learnt from by those who think. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And among His Signs is that He shows you the lightning, for fear and for hope, and He sends down water (rain) from the sky, and therewith revives the earth after its death.
