Surah Ar-Ra'd (The Thunder) — سورة الرعد - **Verse:** 31 / 43 · **Juz:** 13 · **Mushaf page:** 252 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ar-rad/verse-31 ## Arabic وَلَوْ اَنَّ قُرْاٰناً سُيِّرَتْ بِهِ الْجِبَالُ اَوْ قُطِّعَتْ بِهِ الْاَرْضُ اَوْ كُلِّمَ بِهِ الْمَوْتٰىۜ بَلْ لِلّٰهِ الْاَمْرُ جَم۪يعاًۜ اَفَلَمْ يَايْـَٔسِ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُٓوا اَنْ لَوْ يَشَٓاءُ اللّٰهُ لَهَدَى النَّاسَ جَم۪يعاًۜ وَلَا يَزَالُ الَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُوا تُص۪يبُهُمْ بِمَا صَنَعُوا قَارِعَةٌ اَوْ تَحُلُّ قَر۪يباً مِنْ دَارِهِمْ حَتّٰى يَأْتِيَ وَعْدُ اللّٰهِۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يُخْلِفُ الْم۪يعَادَ۟ ## Transcription Walaw anna qur-anan suyyirat bihialjibalu aw quttiAAat bihi al-ardu awkullima bihi almawta bal lillahi al-amru jameeAAanafalam yay-asi allatheena amanoo an law yashaoAllahu lahada annasa jameeAAan walayazalu allatheena kafaroo tuseebuhum bimasanaAAoo qariAAatun aw tahullu qareeban mindarihim hatta ya/tiya waAAdu Allahiinna Allaha la yukhlifu almeeAAad ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Even if there was a Qur’an which moved mountains, or split the earth open or spoke to the dead. . .! On the contrary! The affair is Allah’s altogether. Do those who have iman not know that if Allah had wanted to He could have guided all mankind? Those who are kafir will not cease to be struck by disaster for what they have done – or a disaster will happen close to their homes – until Allah’s promise is fulfilled. Allah will not fail to keep His promise. ### Progressive Muslims And if a Quran were to be used to move mountains, or to slice the Earth, or the dead were spoken to with it. No, to God is all matters. Did not those who believe know that if God wished He would have guided all the people As for those who reject, they continue to be stricken with disaster or it comes near to their homes, until God's promise comes true. God does not break the appointment. ### Shabbir Ahmed Our Law precludes the possibility that a Lecture would move the mountains, tear the earth asunder, or make the dead speak. (The Qur'an is intended to move hearts, not mountains (6:7), (6:25), (6:112), (15:14-15), (17:90-93)). Nay, all Decree belongs to Allah. Do not the believers know that if Allah had Willed, He could have guided all mankind (by not giving them free will 10:100)? As for the rejecters of the Divine Laws, disasters will not cease to strike them for their deeds, even close to their homes until the Promise of Allah comes to pass. Verily, Allah never fails in His Promise. (Mankind will keep devising various political systems in search for the best. Those systems will keep collapsing and they will keep suffering far and close to their homes. Then, ultimately, they will realize that the Qur'an offers the solutions to all the problems facing humanity (41:53), (51:20-21)). ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And were there a recitation whereby the mountains were set in motion, or the earth rent asunder, or the dead caused to speak[...]. The truth is, to God belongs the command altogether. Have not those who heed warning despaired that, had God willed, He would have guided mankind all together? And those who ignore warning: disaster will cease not to strike them for what they have wrought, or to descend near their abodes, until the promise of God comes; God will not break the appointment. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation Andif a revelation were to be used to move mountains, or to slice the earth, or the dead were spoken to with it! Indeed, to God are all matters. Did not those who have believed know that if God had wished He would have guided all the people? As for those who reject, they continue to be stricken with disaster or it comes near to their homes, until the promise of God comes true. God does not break the appointment. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament Even if a Quran caused mountains to move, or the earth to tear asunder, or the dead to speak (they will not believe). GOD controls all things. Is it not time for the believers to give up and realize that if GOD willed, He could have guided all the people? The disbelievers will continue to suffer disasters, as a consequence of their own works, or have disasters strike close to them, until GOD's promise is fulfilled. GOD will never change the predetermined destiny. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Had there been a Qur'an which could have made the mountains move, or the earth to cleave asunder, or the dead to speak, yet all authority belongs to God. Have the believers not learnt that if God had so willed He could have guided all mankind? As for unbelievers, they will be visited by misfortune endlessly for what they have done; or it would sit in their homes till the promised threat of God comes to pass. Surely God does not go back on His promise. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And if there was any qur'an by which the mountains would be removed or the earth would be broken apart or the dead would be made to speak, [it would be this Qur'an], but to Allah belongs the affair entirely. Then have those who believed not accepted that had Allah willed, He would have guided the people, all of them? And those who disbelieve do not cease to be struck, for what they have done, by calamity - or it will descend near their home - until there comes the promise of Allah. Indeed, Allah does not fail in [His] promise. ### Muhammad Asad Yet even if [they should listen to] a [divine] discourse by which mountains could be moved, or the earth cleft asunder, or the dead made to speak - [they who are bent on denying the truth would still refuse to believe in it]! Nay, but God alone has the power to decide what shall be. Have, then, they who have attained to faith not yet come to know that, had God so willed; He would indeed have guided all mankind aright? But as for those who are bent on denying the truth-in result of their [evil] deeds, sudden calamities will always befall them or will alight close to their homes; [and this will continue] until God's promise [of resurrection] is fulfilled: verily, God never fails to fulfil His promise! ### Marmaduke Pickthall Had it been possible for a Lecture to cause the mountains to move, or the earth to be torn asunder, or the dead to speak, (this Qur'an would have done so). Nay, but Allah's is the whole command. Do not those who believe know that, had Allah willed, He could have guided all mankind? As for those who disbelieve, disaster ceaseth not to strike them because of what they do, or it dwelleth near their home until the threat of Allah come to pass. Lo! Allah faileth not to keep the tryst. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary And what would have happened were a Qur'an to be revealed wherewith mountains could be set in motion, or the earth cleft, or the dead made to speak?[1] (To show such signs is not at all difficult for) everything rests entirely with Allah.[2] So, do not the people of faith (still look forward to such a sign in response to the demand of the unbelievers and) despair as a result of knowing that had Allah so willed, He could have guided all to the Truth.[3] Misfortune continues to afflict the unbelievers on account of their misdeeds, or to befall on locations close to their habitation. This will continue until Allah's promise (of chastisement) is fulfilled. Indeed Allah does not go back upon His promise. _Footnotes_ - [1] This verse has been addressed to the believers who were feeling uneasy that no such sign was being sent as was demanded by the disbelievers. They thought that such a sign would convince the disbelievers and they would accept Islam. Therefore when no such sign was sent, they became all the more uneasy for the lack of the fulfillment of the demand that gave rise to doubts about the Prophethood of the Messenger (peace be upon him). The question posed in this verse is meant to remove that uneasiness of the Muslims. It is like this: Do you think that they would have embraced Islam if such and such signs had been shown to them all of a sudden along with a Surah of the Quran? Are you under the delusion that they are quite ready to accept Islam and are waiting only for such a sign? Do you think that those people who have failed to see the light of the truth in the teachings of the Quran, in the phenomena of the universe, in the pure and spotless life of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and in the wonderful change in the lives of his companions, would see the light of the truth in the moving of the mountains, in the cleavage of the earth and in the coming out of the dead from the graves? - [2] "But to Allah belongs the command entirely" and He can show any sign if He so desires. He is not showing any sign for it does not fit in the scheme laid down for the guidance of man. As the real object is to show guidance to mankind through the Prophet and not to compel them to believe in the Prophethood of a Prophet, He desires that the people should gain guidance by thinking and observing wisely and not by seeing signs. - [3] That is, if the object had been to make human beings believers even without consciously understanding it, Allah could have created them believers by birth. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And if there be a discourse that has a firm place in the realm of fact, a discourse by which mountains could be set in motion or the earth be torn apart or the dead be spoken to it would have been this Quran But, command, control, domination and decision are asserted as Allah's own. Further, do those whose hearts have been touched with the divine hand not realize that had Allah willed He could have guided mankind as a whole to His path of righteousness! Nonetheless, those whose hearts dare rise defiant against Allah -shall not cease to be bombarded with disaster hitting them directly in requital of their evil deeds or hits close enough to their homes -as a deterrent- until Allah's promised punishment comes to pass. Allah never fails to keep His promise. ### Bijan Moeinian The disbelievers (who ask for a miracle) would not have believed, even if this Qur’an had made the mountains to move, the earth to open up or the dead to speak (as it happened in the case of the previous prophets. ) God is in control of everything. It is too soon for the believer to be disappointed (that an undeniable miracle is not being sent.) If God wills, He can guide all the people (which, by the way, happened in their own life time when after the fall of Mecca, disbelievers embraced Islam by groups.) The disbelievers will continuously suffer directly (as it happened battle after battle) or indirectly in account of their own mischief. The Lord’s promise will be fulfilled; He never fails to deliver. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And if there had been a Qur’ân with which mountains could be moved (from their places), or the earth could be cloven asunder, or the dead could be made to speak (it would not have been other than this Qur’ân). But the decision of all things is certainly with Allâh. Have not then those who believed yet known that had Allâh willed, He could have guided all mankind? And a disaster will not cease to strike those who disbelieved because of their (evil) deeds or it (i.e. the disaster) settles close to their homes, until the Promise of Allâh comes to pass. Certainly, Allâh breaks not His Promise. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali If there were a Qur'an with which mountains were moved, or the earth were cloven asunder, or the dead were made to speak, (this would be the one!) But, truly, the command is with Allah in all things! Do not the Believers know, that, had Allah (so) willed, He could have guided all mankind (to the right)? But the Unbelievers,- never will disaster cease to seize them for their (ill) deeds, or to settle close to their homes, until the promise of Allah come to pass, for, verily, Allah will not fail in His promise. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran If there were a recitation that could cause mountains to move, or the earth to split, or the dead to speak, ˹it would have been this Quran˺. But all matters are by Allah’s Will. Have the believers not yet realized that had Allah willed, He could have guided all of humanity? And disasters will continue to afflict the disbelievers or strike close to their homes for their misdeeds, until Allah’s promise comes to pass. Surely Allah never fails in His promise. ### Taqi Usmani And even if there were a Qur’ān wherewith the mountains could be moved, or the earth could be split apart, or wherewith the dead are spoken to, (they would not believe). In fact, every decision rests only with Allah. Are the believers not satisfied with the fact that, if Allah willed, He would have brought all the people to the right path?And the disbelievers are continually receiving affliction because of what they did, or it visits somewhere close to their homes, until Allah’s promise will come to pass. Surely, Allah does not go back upon His promise. ### Abdul Haleem If there were ever to be a Quran with which mountains could be moved, the earth shattered, or the dead made to speak [it would have been this one], but everything is truly in God’s hands. Do the believers not realize that if God had so willed, He could have guided all mankind? As for the disbelievers, because of their misdeeds, disaster will not cease to afflict them or fall close to their homes until God’s promise is fulfilled: God never fails to keep His promise. ### Arthur John Arberry If only a Koran whereby the mountains were set in motion, or the earth were cleft, or the dead were spoken to -- nay, but God's is the affair altogether. Did not the believers know that, if God had willed, He would have guided men all together? And still the unbelievers are smitten by a shattering for what they wrought, or it alights nigh their habitation, until God's promise comes; and God will not fail the tryst. ### E. Henry Palmer And though it were a Qur'an by which the mountains were moved, or by which the earth were cut up, or the dead made to speak - nay, God's is the command altogether! Did not those who believed know that if God had pleased He would have guided men altogether? And a striking calamity shall not cease to overtake those who misbelieve for what they have wrought, or to alight close by their dwellings; until God's promise comes - verily, God fails not in His promise. ### Hamid S. Aziz Thus have We sent you to a nation before which other nations have passed away, to recite unto them that which We have inspired in you, while they are disbelievers in the Beneficent. Say, "He is my Lord; there is no God but He; On Him do I rely, and unto Him do I turn." ### Mahmoud Ghali And if there had been a Qur'an whereby the mountains were made to travel or the earth were cut up (into pieces) or the dead were spoken to-no indeed, to Allah is the Command altogether. Have the ones who have believed then not learned (Literally: despaired "of human efforts") that, if Allah decided, He would indeed have guided mankind altogether? And a smiler will not cease afflicting the ones who have disbelieved for what they have worked, (i.e., what they have done) or it (i.e., the punishment) alights near their residence until the promise of Allah comes up to them. Surely Allah does not fail His promised appointment. ### George Sale Though a Koran were revealed by which mountains should be removed, or the earth cleaved in sunder, or the dead be caused to speak, it would be in vain. But the matter belongeth wholly unto God. Do not therefore the believers know, that if God pleased, He would certainly direct all men? Adversity shall not cease to afflict the unbelievers for that which they have committed, or to sit down near their habitations, until God's promise come: For God is not contrary to the promise. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed And if there was a Quran with which mountains were moved, or the earth was split open, or the dead were to speak, (this Quran would be that Book!) but, truly, the command for all things is with Allah! Do the believers not know, that if Allah willed, He could have guided all mankind (to the Right)? But for the disbelievers— Disaster will never stop to grab them for their (ill) deeds, or fall close to their homes, until the promise of Allah has come true, because truly, Allah will not fail in His promise. ### Amatul Rahman Omar Had there been a Qur'ân whereby mountains could be moved, or whereby the earth could be torn asunder, or whereby the dead could be made to speak (it is this very Qur'ân indeed). Behold! the commandment and all power belongs to Allâh. Have not those who believe realized yet that if Allâh had (enforced) His will He would have indeed guided all mankind. And as for those who disbelieve, one calamity or the other will continue to befall them owing to their (evil) activities till you come to alight in their neighborhood, until the promise of Allâh (about the conquest of Makkah) comes to pass. Verily, Allâh will not fail (this) promise (of His). ### Ali Quli Qarai If only it were a Qur’ān whereby the mountains could be moved, or the earth could be toured, or the dead could be spoken to. . . . Rather all dispensation belongs to Allah. Have not the faithful yet realised that had Allah wished He would have guided mankind all together? The faithless will continue to be visited by catastrophes because of their doings —or they will land near their habitations— until Allah’s promise comes to pass. Indeed Allah does not break His promise. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü Eğer ki, kendisi (okunarak) dağların yürütüldüğü yahut arzın parça parça edildiği veya kendisiyle ölülerin konuşturulduğu bir Kur'an olsaydı bu (gene iman etmezlerdi)! Hayır, Hüküm tümüyle Allah'ındır! İman edenler açıkça bilmediler mi, eğer Allah dileseydi elbette insanların hepsini hakikate erdirirdi! Hayır, emrin tümü Allah'ındır. İman edenler hala anlamadılar mı ki, eğer Allah dilemiş olsaydı, insanların tümünü hidayete erdirmiş olurdu. İnkar edenler, Allah'ın va'di gelinceye kadar, yaptıkları dolayısıyla ya başlarına çetin bir bela çatacak veya yurtlarının yakınına inecek. Şüphesiz Allah, verdiği sözden dönmez. (Veya miadını şaşırmaz.) ### Bayraktar Bayraklı — Yeni Bir Anlayışın Işığında Kur'an Meali Eğer, Kur'an ile dağlar yürütülmüş veya yeryüzü parçalanmış yahut ölüler konuşturulmuş olsaydı, kafirler yine inanmazlardı. Halbuki bütün işler Allah'a aittir. İnananlar hala anlamadılar mı; Allah dilerse, bütün insanları yola getirebilirdi. Allah'ın sözü yerine gelene kadar, yaptıklarından ötürü, inkar edenlerin ya başlarına yahut evlerinin yakınına düşecek bir vurucu felaketin gelmesi kaçınılmazdır. Doğrusu, Allah verdiği sözden caymaz. ### Diyanet İşleri — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Meali Kendisiyle dağların yürütüleceği veya yeryüzünün parçalanacağı, ya da ölülerin konuşturulacağı bir Kur'an olacak olsaydı (o yine bu kitap olurdu). Fakat bütün emir yalnız Allah'ındır. İman edenler anlamadılar mı ki, Allah dileseydi bütün insanları doğru yola eriştirirdi. Fakat bütün emir Allahın, daha iyman edenler, kafirlerden ümidi kesip anlamadılar mı ki Allah dilese idi elbette insanlara hep birden hidayet buyurdu, o küfredenler onların kendi san'atlar ile başlarına musibet inip duracak veyahud yurtlarının yakınına konacak, nihayet Allahın va'di gelecek, her halde Allah miadını şaşırmaz ### Elmalılı (sadeleştirilmiş) Kendisiyle dağların yürütüldüğü veya yerin parçalandığı yahut kendisiyle ölülerin konuşturulduğu bir Kur'an olsaydı... Fakat bütün emir Allah'ındır! İman edenler, kafirlerden ümidi kesip daha anlamadılar mı ki, Allah dileseydi elbette insanlara hep birden hidayet buyururdu; o küfredenler, onların kendi sanatları yüzünden başlarına musibet inip duracak ya da yurtlarının yakınına konacak. Nihayet Allah'ın va'di gelecek! Şüphesiz ki Allah va'dinden şaşırmaz! ### Gültekin Onan Eğer kendisiyle dağların yürütüldüğü, yerin parçalandığı veya ölülerin konuşturulduğu bir Kuran olsaydı [yine bu Kuran olurdu]. Hayır, buyruğun tümü Tanrı'nındır. İnananlar hala anlamadılar mı ki eğer Tanrı dilemiş olsaydı, insanların tümünü hidayete erdirirdi. Küfredenler, Tanrı'nın vaadi gelinceye kadar, yaptıkları dolayısıyla ya başlarına çetin bir bela çatacak veya yurtlarının yakınına inecek. Şüphesiz Tanrı verdiği sözden dönmez (veya miadını şaşırmaz). ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Bir Kur'an ki eğer onunla dağlar (yerlerinden koparılıb) yürütülseydi veya onunla yer parça parça edilseydi, yahud onunla ölüler konuşdurulsaydı (İşte o, ancak bu kitab-ı kerim olurdu). Fakat bütün emir (ve kudret-i mutlaka) yalınız Allahındır. iman edenler haala şu hakikati bilmediler mi ki Allah dileseydi elbette insanların hepsine birden hidayet ederdi. O kafirler (e gelince:) Allahın va'di (erişinceye) kadar kendi sun (-u taksıyrleri, küfürleri, kötü amel) leri yüzünden ya ansızın başlarına büyük bela çatıb duracak, yahud (o bela) yurdlarının yakınına konacakdır. Şübhesiz ki Allah va'dinden dönmez. ### İbni Kesir Şayet Kur'an ile; dağlar yürütülmüş veya yeryüzü parçalanmış, yahut ölüler konuşturulmuş olsaydı; kafirler yine de inanmazlardı. Halbuki bütün işler Allah'a aittir. İnananlar hala anlamadılar mı ki; Allah dileseydi bütün insanları doğru yola eriştirirdi. Ve yaptıklarından dolayı Allah'ın vaadi yerine gelene kadar küfredenlerin ya başına veya evlerinin yakınına bir bela gelirdi. Şüphesiz Allah, verdiği sözden caymaz. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı (Onlar) kendisiyle dağların yürütüldüğü, yeryüzünün yarılıp açıldığı, ölülerin konuşturulduğu (ilahi) bir metin (dinlemiş olsalardı ona da inanmazlardı)! Oysa, olacak olan her şeye karar verme gücü yalnızca Allah'a aittir. Peki, inananlar hala anlamadılar mı ki, eğer Allah öyle olmasını dileseydi bütün insanlığı doğru yola yöneltirdi? Fakat, o hakkı inkara şartlanmış olanlara gelince, işledikleri kötülüklerden ötürü, böylelerinin başlarına her an beklenmedik bir felaket çullanmaktan ya da yurtlarının yanına / yakınına inmekten geri kalmaz, ta ki Allah'ın verdiği söz yerine gelinceye kadar; gerçek şu ki, Allah verdiği sözü yerine getirmekten asla geri durmaz! ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Kur'an ile dağlar yürütülse veya yeryüzü parçalansa yahut ölüler konuşturulsa... Bilakis, bütün emir Allah'ındır. İman edenler bilmiyorlar mı ki, Allah dileseydi bütün insanları doğru yola iletebilirdi. Allah'ın sözü yerine gelinceye kadar, yaptıkları işler sebebiyle inkar edenlere bir belanın dokunması veya evlerinin yakınına inmesi devam eder durur. Allah, verdiği sözden dönmez. ### Süleyman Ateş — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Eğer kendisiyle dağların yürütüldüğü, yahut arzın parçalandığı, yahut ölülerin konuşturulduğu bir Kur'an olsaydı!.. Hayır, bütün işler Allah'a aittir. İnananlar hala anlamadılar mı ki, Allah dileseydi, bütün insanları yola iletirdi? Yaptıkları işler yüzünden inkar edenlerin başlarına ani bela(lar) gelmeğe devam edecek, yahut yurtlarının yakınına konacak (yahut sen onların yurtlarının yakınına konacaksın), Allah'ın va'di gelinceye kadar bu böyle sürüp gidecektir. Allah sözünden caymaz. ### Yaşar Nuri Öztürk — Kur'an-ı Kerim Meali Kendisiyle, dağların yürütüldüğü yahut yerkürenin parçalandığı yahut ölülerin konuşturulduğu bir Kur'an mı olsaydı! Hayır, iş ve oluşun tümü Allah'ındır. İman edenler hala ümidi kesip anlamadılar mı ki, Allah dileseydi elbette insanlara tümden hidayet verirdi. O küfre sapanlara gelince, sanayi olarak ürettiklerinin sonucu halinde başlarına gülle, tokmak türünden belalar inmeye devam edecek yahut o belalar onların yurtlarının yakınına konacak. Ta, Allah'ın vaadi gelinceye değin. Allah, vaadine asla ters düşmez. ### Mustafa İslamoğlu — Hayat Kitabı Kur’an Eğer bu kendisi sebebiyle dağların yürütüldüğü, yerlerin paramparça edildiği, ölülerin konuşturulduğu bir hitab olsaydı, (yine de inanmazlardı). Bilakis, iş ve oluş tümüyle Allah'ın yasasına bağlıdır: Peki mü'minler, 'Allah isteseydi bütün insanları hidayete erdirirdi' gerçeğini anlayıp da (herkesi mü'min yapma) sevdasından vazgeçmediler mi?
